To keep a shared photo as close as possible to the original, choose the sharing method that matches what the recipient needs: use WhatsApp HD for a convenient in-chat preview, send the file as a document when the actual file matters, share a Google Photos link for albums or mixed-device viewers, or use AirDrop to transfer original photo data between nearby Apple devices. An “HD” label does not guarantee an untouched original: resolution, compression, format, metadata and edit history are separate parts of photo quality.
Choose the sharing method by what needs to be preserved
| Method | Best for | Fidelity | Access and compatibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| WhatsApp HD media | Sending a photo or video for convenient viewing in a chat | WhatsApp says it supports full-HD media; that is not the same as guaranteeing an untouched original file. | The recipient needs WhatsApp. Larger media uses more data and storage. |
| WhatsApp document or file | Sending the actual file when fidelity matters more than an inline preview | WhatsApp says large files can be sent without compression. | Documents can be up to 2 GB. The recipient may see a file attachment rather than an inline photo. |
| Google Photos link or shared album | Sharing a group of photos or letting people on different platforms view them | Fidelity depends on the copy stored in Google Photos and its backup quality setting. | People without a Google Account can receive a link or use another app. Anyone with an album link can view it. |
| Apple AirDrop | Sending original photo data between nearby Apple devices | With “All Photos Data,” AirDrop can include the original file, edit history and metadata. | Requires compatible nearby Apple devices. A destination that does not support Live Photos may receive only a still image. |
Send a photo in WhatsApp without using the ordinary media route
Use HD for an easier in-chat view
When attaching an existing photo or video, choose WhatsApp’s HD option for full-HD quality in the chat. WhatsApp’s official product page says, “Send any video or photo with full HD quality on WhatsApp.” This is WhatsApp’s product description, not an independent test, and it does not promise that every file property is preserved.

Send the file when the original matters
For an original-file handoff, attach the photo as a document or file instead of sending it as ordinary media. WhatsApp says users can “Send files as big as 2GB to your chats for free without compressing.” The recipient receives a file attachment, which may be less convenient to preview than an in-chat image. The 2 GB figure is WhatsApp’s stated maximum document size on its official page, checked in 2026.

Share albums with Google Photos—and check the stored copy
Create a link or shared album
Google Photos supports direct sharing, link sharing and shared albums. People without a Google Account can receive a link or use another app. For an album link, Google says anyone who has the link can view the album, so treat it as accessible to whoever receives or obtains the link. For sensitive photos, review the sharing and access controls; Google documents how to reset shared links and manage access at Google Photos sharing controls.

Confirm backup quality before sharing
A link can only share the copy available in the photo library, so check the backup setting if preserving captured resolution is important. Google says Original quality stores photos and videos at the same resolution as captured with no quality change, and the files count toward Google Account storage. Storage saver can compress photos and resize photos above 16 MP to 16 MP; videos above 1080p can be resized to 1080p. Google also documents Express settings in regions where the option is available: photos above 3 MP may be resized to 3 MP, and videos above 480p may be resized to 480p. These are Google Photos backup settings, not universal rules for other services. Check the item’s backup details and ensure you are sharing the original-quality copy when fidelity is essential. See Google Photos backup quality options.
Use AirDrop to retain Apple photo data

- Current prevents file-format conversion.
- Most Compatible may convert files to JPEG or MOV.
- All Photos Data shares the original file with its edit history and metadata. Apple’s current guide says this option is available with AirDrop only.
These choices are separate from whether the destination supports every feature in the photo. Apple cautions that a device or service without Live Photo support receives a still image. For a recipient who needs motion or other special features, confirm compatibility before sending.

Check the received photo when the result matters
“Quality” can refer to several different things: pixel dimensions, compression, file format, metadata such as capture details, or an edit history. A preview that looks sharp on a phone does not establish that the recipient has the original file. If the exact result matters, ask the recipient to check the received file’s dimensions and format, and confirm whether metadata or edit history was included.
