Stop Letting AI Code Your GUI Before It Draws It

A design checkpoint keeps AI-generated interface code anchored to an agreed user task, flow, and visual direction. Here’s how to brief, review, and hand off the design.

Agree on the interface before asking an AI coding agent to implement it. Define the user, task, platform, screens, interactions, and constraints; then review a design or prototype of the full flow. Once the team approves that direction, give it to the coding agent as the implementation target. Generated code is a draft, and a preview is a review aid—not proof of production quality or accessibility.

What “draw it first” means

It means making the intended interface visible before implementation becomes the only expression of the idea. The right checkpoint depends on what the team needs to decide: a static frame can clarify hierarchy and content, an interactive prototype can expose assumptions about navigation and behavior, and a running code preview can show how an implementation renders in its target environment.

These checkpoints answer different questions. A prototype does not establish that production code is robust, and a working preview does not by itself establish accessibility. Choose the lightest artifact that lets the team resolve the decisions in front of it.

Checkpoint Best question to answer Trade-off
Static wireframe or design frame Are the screen structure, content, and hierarchy right? Fast to review, but does not demonstrate interaction behavior.
Interactive prototype Does the flow and interaction model make sense? Useful for discussing navigation and states, but does not prove production implementation quality.
Running code preview Does the implementation render and behave as intended in its target environment? Closest to implementation, but still needs engineering and accessibility checks.

Set the brief before prompting

Start with decisions the agent cannot safely infer. Figma’s guidance for Make recommends direct prompts and upfront constraints; the same principle helps with any coding agent. Specify:

Philips 24 Inch Computer Monitor FHD 100Hz VA VESA Flicker-Free, 241V8LB
  • CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
  • INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
  • WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
  • Who the interface serves and the task they need to complete.
  • The target platform and expected outcome.
  • Required screens, important states, and interactions.
  • Constraints such as accessibility needs and existing product conventions.
  • Relevant design-system components, styles, and variables.

“Build a dashboard” leaves major choices implicit. A useful brief says what the user is trying to do, what screens support that task, what happens in important states, and which constraints the implementation must honor. Figma Make documentation covers prompting, plans, frames, previews, and iteration at Create a Figma Make file.

Give the agent design context, not just a screenshot

When available, provide structured frames, components, and variables. A screenshot can communicate general visual direction, but it does not reliably encode exact values such as colors or the underlying layout structure. Figma says frames carry structured design data and are preferable to screenshots when possible. Its MCP server can expose design information—including variables, components, and layout data—to compatible AI agents, and can generate code from selected frames.

  • SMOOTH ACTION WITH ADAPTIVE-SYNC: Adaptive-Sync technology ensures fluid action sequences and rapid response time. Every frame will be rendered smoothly with crystal clarity and without stutter

Figma MCP can also write native Figma content back to the canvas. Figma recommends its remote server for most users, but only clients listed in its MCP Catalog can connect; verify client support before relying on that workflow. See Introduction to the Figma MCP server.

Review a plan before code for complex flows

For a feature with several screens, states, or dependencies, ask the agent for a plan and review it before generation. Figma Make’s plan mode produces a structured plan that can be refined before code generation. This is the point to catch missing states, assumed behavior, and gaps between the user’s task and the proposed screens—before those assumptions are embedded in implementation.

  • Clear visuals. Fluid motion: A 144Hz refresh rate and 1ms MPRT deliver smooth, tear‑free motion across work, gaming, and streaming for clearer, more fluid viewing.
  • Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star* certification reduces harmful blue light while preserving stunning color quality without compromise. *TÜV Rheinland 3-star eye comfort certification.
  • Wide viewing angle: Get consistent views across a wide 178° /178° viewing angle.
  • In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
  • Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.

For a small, well-specified screen, a separate plan may add little. Use the checkpoint when the cost of correcting a mistaken flow is greater than the effort of reviewing the plan.

Inspect the whole flow, then give specific feedback

Review connected screens together rather than approving each one in isolation. A whole-flow review can reveal redundant controls, inconsistent use of components, weak hierarchy, spacing or typography problems, and missing states that are easy to overlook in a single-screen glance. Figma’s code-to-canvas workflow describes importing code-based screens as editable frames for this broader visual review and refinement: Workflow lab: Code to canvas.

When something is wrong, point to the element or region and name the desired change. A targeted edit or annotation gives the agent clearer direction than a broad request to “make it better.” Figma Make supports preview iteration and direct edits; the specific controls available may vary with the product experience.

Hand off the approved design and verify the result

Once the team agrees on the intended screens and flow, use that design as the implementation target. Dev Mode can expose layer properties and annotations useful for handoff; its features are documented in Guide to Dev Mode in Figma. After code changes, compare the running result with the reviewed frames, then test behavior and accessibility as separate checks.

A visual inspection cannot certify accessible contrast. For WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.3, the W3C’s guidance explains the contrast requirement and its exceptions: Understanding Success Criterion 1.4.3: Contrast (Minimum). Check the applicable criterion against the actual interface rather than inferring conformance from how it looks in a preview.

What to know about Figma Make and local-code access

Figma’s current Make documentation describes creating functional prototypes, web apps, and interactive UI, with previews that can be edited and iterated. AI credits are consumed with each Make prompt; usage varies by model, task complexity, and context volume, and the documentation passage does not establish a stable per-prompt figure. Check current plan and access details before making a purchase decision.

Figma’s May 28, 2026 announcement described local-code editing as a limited beta for selected users of its Mac beta desktop app, with Git branches and local commits before a pull request. That was a time-specific rollout statement, not a guarantee of current or general availability. The announcement also says: “Shipping production code should happen intentionally, through your team’s development process.” That is Figma’s product guidance, not independent evidence that a particular tool generates production-ready code. See Figma Make, now on your local code.
