Stop Installing Giant Icon Packages: Write SVGs as Source With a CLI and MCP

A workflow for teams that need icons from several collections: search a catalog, fetch only the chosen SVGs, and commit them to the repository, with the commands, MCP setup and checks that matter.

If your interface needs a handful of icons from several collections, you can search a catalog, fetch only the SVG files you chose, and commit them to your repository like any other source file. The repository then holds exactly the assets the interface renders, and reviewers can read the markup in a pull request. Aria Icons, a project documented as a hosted catalog with a command-line tool and an MCP server, is one implementation of this workflow. It is a sensible option for some teams, not a verdict that icon packages are wrong. A single icon family used across most of a product is often the simpler choice.

When a full icon package is the wrong shape

The problem the workflow targets is a mixed need. A typical screen wants a house, an arrow, a settings gear and the GitHub mark, and those four come from three different places. Installing a whole collection to use four glyphs adds a dependency whose contents you rarely inspect, and it does not give you a single place to see which icons the application actually uses.

A single-family package remains a good choice when visual consistency matters most and the product uses that family broadly. Its strengths are a coherent style, a familiar install workflow and fewer decisions for designers and developers. The approach described here is most useful when icons come from several sets, when a few one-off brand marks are needed, or when the team wants the SVG files themselves in version control.

How the options compare

Approach Best fit Trade-off
One collection package, such as Lucide Teams that want one visual style and a conventional package workflow Less suited to code that mixes sets or needs many brand marks. The “giant package” framing is the article author’s characterization; no package-size measurement is published in the sources reviewed.
Iconify Teams that want a broad catalog According to the Aria Icons author, a separate step is still needed to place chosen icons into the repository as source and to give agents access.
Manual SVG copy and paste A few icons and no dependency at all No catalog search and no shared source of truth. Drift and duplicate or incorrect files are the usual failure mode.
Aria Icons Teams that want cross-collection search, selected SVGs written as files, and an MCP interface for coding agents Adopting this means adopting a workflow and relying on the hosted catalog for search and retrieval, as the project describes it.

The defensible claim is narrow: the documented CLI downloads the icons you request rather than shipping the full icon index inside the package. No controlled measurement of bundle size, install time, CI duration or agent error rate was found in the published material, so none of those should be promised.

The workflow in five steps

  1. Search visually when style matters. Use the hosted catalog at https://icons.leularia.com/ or the CLI search command to compare candidates side by side.
  2. Agree on identifiers. Record each icon as a collection:name pair, such as lucide:house, tabler:arrow-up or thesvg:github, in a ticket or design-system spec. Stable identifiers are what make the choice reviewable.
  3. Retrieve the SVG. Fetch the chosen icon with the CLI or let a connected agent do it through search and fetch.
  4. Review the file and its provenance. Open the SVG, confirm the collection it came from, and check that collection’s license before committing.
  5. Commit it and audit periodically. Keep the SVG in the repository next to the components that use it. Revisit older mixed-library usage when the team decides to standardize.

Commands and their current status

The examples below are the ones given in the project’s documentation and the DEV Community article by arialus (posted 2026-09-23), at this article. Command syntax changes between releases, so treat the project’s README at the Aria Icons repository as the authority and confirm each command against it before copying it into team documentation. The examples were not independently run for this article.

Quickstart

npx -y aria-icons@latest setup
npx aria-icons search house
npx aria-icons get lucide:house
npx aria-icons add lucide:house tabler:arrow-up thesvg:github

In this sequence, search lists candidates, get prints a single icon so you can inspect it, and add writes the selected icons into the project. The README also lists installation through npm and Bun, and the command families search, get, add, migrate, doctor, suggest, init, setup and mcp.

  • Note: Make sure your smartphone is equipped with OTG function and need to open OTG function in Settings when you plug memory stick, then you can transfer easily data bewteen different devices

Diagnosing an existing mixed codebase

npx aria-icons doctor
npx aria-icons suggest src/
npx aria-icons migrate --to lucide

These commands are aimed at projects that already import icons from several libraries. The sequence to use is to run doctor first to see the current state, suggest to find replacement candidates in a source directory, and migrate only once you have chosen a target collection. Review the diff from a migration as you would any automated refactor, since a visually similar glyph in another set can still differ in weight or alignment.

Connecting a coding agent through MCP

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) interface exposes search and fetch to compatible coding agents. The point of connecting one is that the agent selects real catalog entries by identifier instead of inventing names that may not exist. Two connection modes are documented.

Local stdio server

For a local server, the README describes a configuration entry whose command is npx with the arguments -y and aria-icons. The key name for the server is yours to choose. A typical entry looks like this:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "icons": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "aria-icons"]
    }
  }
}

Confirm the exact configuration file location for your agent client, since clients differ in where they read MCP settings.

Remote HTTP endpoint

What an agent connection does and does not guarantee

MCP access makes it possible for an agent to search and fetch from the same catalog a person uses. It does not make the agent’s choices correct. The agent can still pick an icon that is visually wrong for the context, or misread a request. Keep the human review step in the workflow above, because the author’s own framing is that agents get the catalog truth while people keep commit hygiene. That is the author’s positioning, not an independently measured result.

What the catalog counts show

Three published figures describe the catalog size, and they do not match. The DEV Community article gives an approximate figure of about 340k SVGs, published in 2026. The repository README headlines “1,000,000 SVG icons,” which is the project’s own marketing headline rather than a verified count. The hosted site displayed 973,920 icons when it was checked on 2026-10-07. Catalog counts change as collections are added, so cite the figure with its date. None of these numbers indicates how much smaller or faster a project becomes when it uses the workflow.

Checks before you adopt it

  • Licenses. The Aria Icons project is documented under an MIT license, but the collections it indexes come from several upstream sources, including vendored sets such as Lucide, Tabler and Heroicons, theSVG brand marks, and Iconify sets. Do not assume every collection shares one license. Check each one before committing its files, and keep a record of which collection each file came from.
  • Accessibility. Decide how each icon is labeled. A decorative icon needs no accessible name, while an icon that is the only content of a button needs one. Copying SVG markup does not add labels.
  • Markup hygiene. Check that committed SVGs fit your sanitization rules and your styling approach, such as hard-coded fills versus currentColor.
  • Visual consistency. Mixing collections can produce different stroke weights, corner radii and optical sizes on one screen. Compare icons at the sizes you ship.
  • Service dependency. Search and retrieval depend on the hosted catalog or the MCP endpoint. Decide what your team does when either is unavailable, and remember that committed files keep working without them.
  • Project security posture. Review the project’s own setup instructions and security notes in the repository before running its installer in a production environment.

Limits of the available evidence

The statements in this article come from the project’s README and website, the author’s DEV Community post, and the stated features of the tool. No independent hands-on test, benchmark, or security review of the tool was found when this article was prepared. Treat the feature list as the project’s claims, check them against the current release, and confirm the command syntax shown above before publishing it in your own documentation.
