Then test the connection, restart and update the device and app, and check storage and compatibility. These comparisons narrow down the likely cause; none proves it by itself.
First, find out what the problem affects
- Try another Hulu show or movie. If only one title fails, the issue may be specific to that title. If several Hulu titles fail, check Hulu’s Help Center for service information.
- Try another streaming app on the same device. If other apps also have trouble, check the device or internet connection. If they work normally, focus on Hulu and its app.
- Compare another device, if available. If Hulu works on another device, that points toward the original device or its app; if it fails on multiple devices, check the connection or Hulu service.
Roku Support notes that “An unstable internet connection can cause issues with loading videos and apps on your Roku device.” Its guide recommends comparing titles and other apps when diagnosing playback problems: Issues playing shows and movies on your Roku device.

Check whether the connection is stable enough
Confirm that the streaming device is online and run its built-in network check if one is available. Hulu’s published sustained download recommendations are 3.0 Mbps for the Streaming Library, 8.0 Mbps for live streams, and 16.0 Mbps for 4K. Hulu says 1.5 Mbps may allow reduced-quality streaming. These are recommendations, not guarantees against buffering or interruptions; a speed test is only a snapshot, and performance can vary over time. See Hulu’s speed recommendations.
Recommended Free Tools
- Pause large downloads and other heavy internet use, then try playback again. Other simultaneous activity may require additional bandwidth.
- On Roku, reduce the number of connected devices using the network as a troubleshooting test.
- If Wi-Fi seems unstable and both the device and router have Ethernet ports, try a wired connection. Hulu Japan’s set-top-box guide suggests Ethernet for Wi-Fi playback problems, but it was updated in March 2020 and applies to that market and device context; menu instructions there should not be treated as current, universal U.S. guidance. See Hulu Japan’s set-top-box troubleshooting guide.
Restart the device, then update Hulu and device software
Use the device’s own restart option first. Avoid a factory reset as an early troubleshooting step: it is more disruptive and may erase settings.

Roku
- From the Home screen, go to Settings > System > Power > System restart. The Power menu may not appear on every Roku model.
- If you cannot use the menu, Roku says unplugging the device for 10 seconds is another way to restart it.
- Check for Roku system and Hulu app updates. Roku recommends checking app updates when an app will not open or crashes at launch.
- If Hulu still will not load, remove and reinstall the app if that option is available. Roku notes that an app cannot be removed while its subscription is billed through Roku.
For other platforms—including Fire TV, Apple TV, smart TVs, phones, and browsers—use the device maker’s current instructions for restarting, updating software, and managing apps. Menu names and available options vary by model and operating-system version.
Check storage and Hulu device compatibility
If the device reports low memory
On Roku, messages such as “Not enough memory,” “Can’t run app,” or “Insufficient memory” can indicate either a connection problem or low storage. Roku recommends restarting the device and removing unused apps to free space. Do not assume other TVs or streaming boxes offer the same storage controls; check their maker’s instructions.

If Hulu will not launch or keeps crashing
Confirm that the exact device model and operating system are supported by Hulu. Hulu’s Roku support information says supported Roku devices run Roku version 11 or later and recommends updating both the device and app. Hulu’s Android TV information lists Android OS 6.0 or later for supported models, while warning that not all Android TV devices are supported. Those minimums do not establish support for every model; check Hulu’s current supported-device information for your specific device.
Contact Hulu if the problem continues
