If alerts still appear—especially after Edge is closed—block the responsible website’s notification permission. For persistent ads, check extensions and scan for unwanted software. If a warning displays a phone number, do not call it or give anyone remote access to your PC.
First identify what is appearing
- A new tab, window, or smaller window: This is the kind of automatic pop-up Edge’s blocker is designed to stop.
- A banner near the lower-right corner or an item in Windows Notification Center: This may be a website notification. It can appear even after Edge is closed, because notifications are a separate site permission. Microsoft explains how to manage website notifications in Edge.
- An ad inside the page you are viewing: This is page content, not an automatically opened window, so the pop-up blocker may not remove it.
- A full-screen warning with loud audio, an infection claim, or a phone number: Treat it as a possible tech-support scam, not proof that your PC is infected.
Keep Edge’s pop-up blocker on
Microsoft says Edge’s pop-up blocker is on by default. To check it, open Settings and more > Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Pop-ups and redirects and leave blocking enabled. The blocker targets sites that automatically open a new window, tab, or partial window. It does not remove ads placed within a webpage or block a window opened after you select a page control. Some trusted sites use a new window for a feature such as viewing a bank statement. If you need that function, allow it only for the specific site you trust rather than making a broad exception.
Block notifications from the offending website
If a site keeps sending alerts, revoke its notification permission. In Edge, go to Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Site permissions > All sites. Select the site, open Notifications, and choose Block. If the site is open, you can also select the site information control beside the address bar and change its Notifications permission to Block. Microsoft’s instructions cover both routes.

Windows can also control notifications by app under Settings > System > Notifications. That can hide banners or disable a source, but changing the specific website’s permission is the more targeted fix when you know which site is responsible. See Windows notification settings.
If interruptions continue, troubleshoot in order
- Update Edge: Open Settings > About Microsoft Edge and install any available update. Microsoft includes updating among its troubleshooting steps.
- Check extensions: Temporarily disable extensions. Turn them back on one at a time and observe whether the interruptions return; this can help identify a problematic add-on.
- Consider third-party cookies: Blocking them may help with some unwanted behavior, but can affect how websites work or sign you in.
- Clear the browser cache: This is another troubleshooting step Microsoft recommends for persistent pop-ups.
- Scan for unwanted software: If ads persist across sites or appear to come from software on the PC, use Windows Security to scan the device.
If the nuisance is an ad embedded in a webpage, Microsoft also mentions reputable ad-blocking extensions as an optional measure. Use the official Edge add-on store, check the extension’s details and permissions, and install only one you trust. An extension is not a substitute for blocking a site’s notification permission or investigating suspicious software. Microsoft’s pop-up guidance.
Handle frightening warnings safely
Do not call a number shown in a browser warning, pay someone who contacts you unexpectedly, or grant remote access to a caller claiming to repair an infection. Microsoft states: “Microsoft error and warning messages never include phone numbers.” Scammers can use full-screen pages, sound, and repeated pop-ups to make a website look like a Windows alert. Edge’s scareware blocker can exit full-screen mode, stop aggressive audio, and show a warning that lets you continue or close the page. It is an additional safeguard, not a guarantee that every deceptive page will be detected. Learn about Edge’s scareware protection.

Windows Security can detect potentially unwanted apps, which may show unexpected ads or offer additional software. Detection alone does not remove an item: select the available action and start it. Microsoft’s separate PUA settings instructions apply to Windows 10; they describe app blocking for items already downloaded or installed, while download blocking works only with Edge.
