Stop Guessing When Scrolling Stops: Use the scrollend Event

The scrollend event tells you when a scroll operation has truly finished, replacing timer guesswork on scroll events. Here is how to use it and when to fall back.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the scrollend event. It fires when a scroll operation has finished: no scroll-position updates are pending and the user’s gesture is complete. Attach it to document for page-level scrolling, or to the scrolling element for a container. It replaces the old habit of resetting a timer on every scroll event and hoping the pause means scrolling is over. (MDN: Document scrollend, MDN: Element scrollend)

Basic usage

document.addEventListener("scrollend", () => {
  // The document scroll operation has completed.
});

const panel = document.querySelector(".scroll-panel");
panel.addEventListener("scrollend", () => {
  // Scrolling inside this element has completed.
});

MDN also documents an onscrollend handler property. Prefer addEventListener, because it lets several independent handlers coexist. (MDN)

What the event actually means

It is not a “scrolling went quiet” timer. The event is tied to scroll-position updates and to completion of the user’s gesture. It covers scrolling from wheel, keyboard, touch or trackpad input, as well as smooth scrolling, scroll snap, and scroll APIs. (MDN, MDN)

Two behaviors matter in practice:

  • The position must change. If an attempted scroll leaves the position unchanged, such as pushing against the end of a container, no scrollend fires. Don’t build logic that depends on an event for a no-op scroll.
  • Target the right scroller. Document-view scrolling is observed on document; scrolling inside a container is observed on that Element. A listener on the wrong object won’t see the other’s events.

scroll or scrollend?

Need Use
Work that must track movement as it happens scroll
Work that should wait for the finished operation (settling UI state, follow-up updates) scrollend
Page scrolling Listener on document
Scrollable panel, list or carousel Listener on that element

Browser support

MDN labels the Document event “Baseline 2025,” meaning it works in the latest devices and browser versions since December 2025. MDN also warns that older devices or browsers may not support it. Both pages point to the CSSOM View specification. If your audience includes older browsers, check a live compatibility table for exact minimum versions rather than relying on a figure copied into an article. (MDN)

Fallback for older browsers

Where the event is missing, a scroll listener with a short quiet-period timer can approximate completion. It is only an approximation: it infers a pause and cannot know whether the gesture has really ended. That comparison follows from the documented semantics of the native event.

function onScrollSettled(target, callback, delay = 150) {
  if ("onscrollend" in window) {
    target.addEventListener("scrollend", callback);
    return;
  }
  let timer;
  target.addEventListener("scroll", () => {
    clearTimeout(timer);
    timer = setTimeout(callback, delay);
  });
}

onScrollSettled(document, () => console.log("settled"));

The 150 ms delay is an arbitrary choice you should tune. A longer one feels laggy, while a shorter one can fire during a mid-gesture pause. The feature check shown is a common pattern, not something MDN prescribes.
