If Gboard changes words you meant to type, adjust Text correction; if keys lag or misfire, troubleshoot the keyboard itself. Those are different problems, and neither setting changes nor Google’s help guidance establishes a guaranteed words-per-minute gain. Start with the least disruptive change that matches your symptom.
Open Gboard’s settings
Android
Open an app with a text field, tap the field to bring up Gboard, open the keyboard’s feature menu, then tap More > Settings. You can also try Android’s system route: Settings > System > Languages & input > Virtual keyboard > Gboard. Labels and locations can differ on manufacturer-customized Android versions. Google’s Gboard setup instructions for Android describe these routes.

iPhone and iPad
Open the Gboard app and tap Keyboard settings. To manage installed keyboards, their order, or languages, go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards in iOS. Google lists these steps in its Gboard setup instructions for iPhone and iPad.
If Gboard changes words you meant to type
Adjust only the correction that is getting in the way
On Android, open Gboard Settings > Text correction. If a particular feature is responsible for unwanted changes, try turning off Smart Compose or Auto-capitalisation. You can leave other suggestions enabled; to keep the suggestion row available, turn on Show suggestion strip. Google’s Android troubleshooting guidance recommends adjusting text-correction options when they cause problems.

On iPhone or iPad, open Gboard’s Keyboard settings and review options such as Auto-correction and Character preview. You can also manage suggestion types there. If Gboard repeatedly gets a name or familiar term wrong, adding it to the dictionary may help.
If suggestions or language switching interrupt you
Remove languages you rarely use from the active keyboard set, then check that the selected language and layout are the ones you intended. Too many active languages can make suggestions or switching less predictable. Google advises Android users to stick to one or two active languages for smoother typing; Gboard on iPhone and iPad supports up to three languages at a time. These are platform-specific limits, not a claim that adding a language always causes a problem.

If tapping keys feels awkward, try Glide typing
Glide typing lets you move a finger across the letters of a word and lift it to enter that word. To try it, open Gboard’s settings and look for Glide typing; availability and menu placement vary by platform and language. Google notes in its Android Glide typing instructions that “Not all languages work with this feature.” It is an alternative input method, not a guaranteed speed boost.
If Gboard lags or keys misfire
Make one change at a time and test the keyboard after each step. That helps distinguish an app or cache issue from a correction setting or a device-specific problem.

- Update Gboard. Check for an available app update in your device’s app store, install it, and try typing again.
- Clear Gboard’s cache on Android. In Android Settings, open the app information page for Gboard, then choose Storage & cache > Clear cache. The exact labels can vary by Android version and manufacturer.
- Try turning off personalization. Google includes this among its Android troubleshooting suggestions. If you use it, test whether typing feels more reliable afterward.
- Change text-correction settings selectively. A correction feature that is processing or replacing text unexpectedly can feel like a typing problem, even when the keyboard is not actually lagging.
- Clear storage or app data only as a later step. Unlike clearing cache, this resets Gboard to its default state. Expect settings and learned behavior to be reset; use Google’s Android troubleshooting steps for the applicable device instructions.
- Reinstall Gboard if needed. Google also documents reinstallation as a fallback. If Gboard is your only installed keyboard, make sure another keyboard is available before removing it.
Features that depend on device, language, or region
Gboard features are not universal across Android, iOS, languages, devices, and regions. For example, Google documents Proofread with Gboard for Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro, English, and the United States; it is not a general fix for lag. Google’s Proofread help page describes that eligibility.
Voice typing is a separate feature with its own device and language limits. Google says detailed voice edits send both the voice-command transcript and the full text in the input field to Google servers for processing. Its advanced voice typing help explains the feature and its requirements. Google’s Android Gboard privacy guidance also says learned words are stored on the device, while separately describing searches, usage statistics, and talk-to-text transcription as information sent to Google. These statements concern different functions, so they should not be treated as one blanket description of all Gboard data handling.
