On iPhone and iPad, open Settings > Apps > Music; on Mac, open Music > Settings > Advanced. Switch off the option for adding favorite songs to your library. Apple’s wording varies by page and software version, so use the matching favorite-song option shown on your device.
Turn off the setting on iPhone
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Apps, then Music.
- Turn off Add Favorite Songs or the similarly named option for adding favorite songs to your library.
Apple’s iPhone-specific guide uses the label Add Favorite Songs, while its general instructions use Add & Delete Favorite Songs. If the exact wording differs, look for the favorite-song library toggle in Music settings. Apple’s iPhone guide and its general favorites instructions document the setting.

Turn off the setting on iPad
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Music.
- Turn off the favorite-song option that adds songs to your library.
Apple’s iPad guide calls the control Add Favorite Songs; its general article calls it Add & Delete Favorite Songs. Follow the label displayed on your installed version of iPadOS.

- Open the Music app.
- In the menu bar, choose Music > Settings.
- Click Advanced.
- Turn off Add & Delete Favorite Songs.
This lets you mark songs as favorites without adding them to your library, according to Apple’s Mac user guide.

What changes when you turn it off
Favoriting a song and adding it to your library are separate actions when this setting is off. Your favorited songs remain available in the Favorite Songs playlist; switching off library addition does not remove the favorite marking.
The control concerns songs. Apple says favoriting an album, artist, or playlist adds that item to your Library, so do not expect this song setting to stop those other types from appearing there. Apple also says favorites can improve recommendations; on Mac, Apple Music subscribers who favorite artists automatically receive notifications when those artists release new music.

If the setting name or location looks different
Apple’s support instructions do not use identical wording across all pages. On iPhone and iPad, start in Settings > Apps > Music and look for the favorite-song library option. On Mac, check Music > Settings > Advanced. Software updates may change labels or paths, so Apple’s current favorites instructions can help identify the equivalent control.
