If a design-tool JSON export is being manually copied into your web app or parsed there on every load, change the handoff—not necessarily the file format. Keep JSON when design and development tools need a shared token artifact, then validate and transform it into CSS custom properties or another app-ready output as part of your build.
JSON is a useful token exchange format—not automatically your app’s styling interface
The Design Tokens Community Group (DTCG) Format Module 2025.10 defines JSON files for exchanging design tokens between tools. It describes a workflow in which token data is translated into platform-specific source code. That makes JSON a reasonable source or interchange artifact without requiring a web app to treat the JSON itself as its runtime styling API. The specification also notes that tool-specific exports and APIs can leave teams maintaining bespoke integrations.

These are separate decisions: what format design and development tools share, and what representation the application consumes. The specification does not prescribe one universal web architecture. A web app might use generated CSS custom properties, while another platform may need a different output. The right target depends on the app and its build setup.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A practical flow is design source or canonical token files → validation and transformation → generated CSS variables or other platform-specific output → web app. The important change is to make that flow repeatable, rather than relying on a person to export, copy, and wire files by hand.

- Choose a source of truth. Use the design tool’s token data or maintained token files in the format your team has agreed to share.
- Validate the input. Check that the token data follows the expected format and that references resolve before generating application output.
- Transform for the target. Configure a translation step to produce CSS custom properties or another representation suited to the app. Style Dictionary describes transforming tokens for different platforms, languages, and contexts. Its documentation explains the tool’s transformation model.
- Consume the generated output. Have the app use the generated file through its existing styling or build architecture. Avoid adding runtime JSON parsing and mapping unless the app has a concrete reason to do so.
- Run the handoff whenever tokens change. Keep generation and validation in the normal build or release workflow so updates do not depend on remembering a manual export.
This does not mean every team needs the same tooling or build design. It means the translation should be explicit and testable, with the output chosen for the app rather than inherited by default from the design tool’s export format.
Preserve token meaning as well as token values
A transformation step should carry more than raw values forward. The DTCG format includes groups, token types, optional descriptions, aliases or references, and JSON Pointer support. Those structures help tools interpret relationships and categories instead of treating the file as an unstructured collection of strings. The format specification also notes that a token’s full path may be needed to generate a unique identifier when names repeat in different groups.

- 2 in 1: USB C + USB 3.0, 32GB usb c flash drive has dual ports, usb 3.0 port is applied to all devices which have usb 3.0 interface and usb c port is widely used in all Android smartphones with OTG function
- High Speed USB 3.0: Read speed up to 90 MB/s, Write speed up to 30 MB/s, the speed of USB 3.0 interface is faster than USB 2.0, save time to wait, increases work productivity. Note: Speed will be limited if you use the USB key in the USB 2.0 interface
- Large Compatibility: The USB 3.0 Connector is compatible with USB 3.0 & USB 2.0 backward USB 1.1 devices, such as Laptop, Desktop, Car Audio, Tablet, TV, Speakers, Projector. USB-C port is compatible with all Android Smartphones
- Expand Storage: Good performance in storing, transferring and sharing digital data with families, friends, colleagues, customers. It can expand the capacity of smartphone, you can watch movies or share pictures when you go on vacation with your family
- Note: Make sure your smartphone is equipped with OTG function and need to open OTG function in Settings when you plug memory stick, then you can transfer easily data bewteen different devices
That matters when producing names for CSS variables or other outputs: two tokens can share a short name but occupy different paths. Decide how paths, aliases, and types map to your target, then check generated identifiers and resolved values rather than assuming every exporter or transformer makes the same choices.

Format labels alone do not guarantee that the authoring tool, transformer, plugins, and app output all work together. Confirm the exact format and version each part of your pipeline accepts, and test the output your app will actually consume.

For example, Style Dictionary’s version 4 documentation says an instance can use either its original token format or DTCG format, but those formats cannot be mixed in one instance. Check its format guidance against your project’s configuration before combining token sources.
DTCG calls its core format stable for production use while also noting that the specification remains in active development. It is a Design Tokens Community Group specification, not a W3C Standard and not on the W3C Standards Track. The DTCG FAQ explains that status and frames the format as complementary to a team’s token methodology.

Tool support is not a blanket compatibility guarantee. On 2025-10-28, the DTCG announced that more than 10 design tools and open-source projects supported or were implementing the format. That is a dated ecosystem statement, not a current count or proof that a particular export path and feature set will work in your project. See the group’s announcement, then verify your own toolchain.
Decide what belongs in JSON and what belongs in the app
Keep JSON when it helps tools exchange tokens or gives the team a maintainable source artifact. Generate CSS custom properties or another target-specific representation when that is what the web app should consume. Automate the translation, validate the result, and check compatibility across the actual versions and plugins in use. The goal is to remove a fragile manual handoff or unnecessary runtime coupling—not to remove JSON from the token workflow.
