Turn off Chrome launching when Windows starts

Open Chrome and select the three-dot menu, then Settings.

Select On startup.

Turn off Launch Chrome when Windows starts.
The prompt may read, “Begin browsing instantly: Chrome can now launch when Windows starts.” Chromium’s Windows-specific interface text identifies the setting above as the control for that behavior (Chromium source). The option may not appear in every Chrome version or rollout.

If Chrome still opens after Windows sign-in
First check whether the browser itself is launching or whether a Chrome web app or restored page is appearing. Those are separate behaviors and may have separate controls.

A Chrome web app is opening
In Chrome, enter chrome://apps in the address bar. Right-click the app that opens and deselect Launch at startup. Google documents this as a web-app setting, separate from the browser launch option (Google Chrome Help: Use web apps).
The browser itself is opening
If the Chrome setting is off but the browser still starts at sign-in, look for a separate Chrome entry in Windows startup apps or Task Manager. Windows controls can vary by version, so use the startup-app controls for your installed Windows version rather than changing Chrome’s page preferences.

What Chrome’s “On startup” page choices do
The same Chrome settings area also offers choices such as opening the New Tab page, continuing where you left off, or opening specific pages. These determine what Chrome shows after it has started; they do not prevent Chrome from launching with Windows. Google describes these page choices separately (Google Chrome Help: Set your homepage and startup page).

If the prompt appears while the setting is off
A May 2026 Chrome Help Community post reports seeing the banner while the launch setting was off. The post does not establish why it happened or identify a verified fix, so treat it as an anecdotal edge case—not proof that the toggle failed or that a registry change is needed (Chrome Help Community report).
