Choose a Linux distribution by testing whether it fits your computer, required apps, preferred update pace, maintenance tolerance, and support needs—not by popularity. There is no distro that wins for everyone. Start with two or three well-supported candidates, then compare them against the five practical problems below.
1. Will it work on your exact hardware?
Before installing, try the distribution’s live environment if one is available. Ubuntu’s community hardware guidance recommends trying a LiveCD to check whether hardware works; this is a useful test, not a guarantee that every device or distribution will behave identically. See the Ubuntu community system requirements guidance.

In the live session, test the things you rely on: Wi-Fi, graphics, sound, Bluetooth, suspend and resume, printers, external displays, and specialist peripherals. A desktop that appears to run normally may still have a problem with sleep, a dock, or a particular wireless adapter.

Ubuntu’s community guidance names Xfce and LXQt as options, but actual responsiveness depends on the machine, the desktop configuration, and what you do with it. Treat the page as a starting point rather than a current universal hardware specification.

2. Can you run the apps and games you need?
Make a short list of must-have software before choosing. Check the application’s own Linux support and whether any required features, plugins, devices, or workflows are available. If you depend on a particular printer utility, professional tool, or development environment, verify that exact use case rather than assuming a similarly named alternative will be enough.
For gaming, check the games you actually play. Valve’s Proton overview describes a way to run some Windows games through the Linux Steam client and recommends keeping graphics drivers current. Proton is not a promise that every game, anti-cheat component, or graphics configuration will work; compatibility can vary by title and change over time. Check current reports for each game before committing to a system.

3. How often do you want software to change?
Distributions differ in how they balance newer software against predictability. Compare the specific release models and support period of the candidates you are considering, not just their names.
| Choice or approach | What the documentation says | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Debian stable | Debian’s FAQ recommends stable for servers with strong stability requirements, especially those exposed to the Internet. | It is aimed at a stability-first use case; consider whether its software versions suit your desktop needs. |
| Debian testing | Debian contrasts testing’s newer software with a greater possibility of bugs. | Newer versions may appeal if you accept a less predictable experience. |
| Ubuntu fixed releases | Ubuntu says security fixes for fixed releases are generally backported to avoid introducing new functionality and to preserve backward compatibility. | Support duration varies by release type and version. Check the current dates for the exact release you plan to install. |
These are examples of trade-offs, not a ranking of all Linux distributions. Consult the Debian FAQ on choosing a distribution and Ubuntu’s release-cycle documentation for the relevant details.

- [LEGACY SERIAL PORT] Features a native RS-232 Serial Port, HDMI, and USB 3.0. Essential for connecting directly to industrial machinery, CNCs, and automotive diagnostic tools without unreliable adapter
4. How much maintenance and troubleshooting will you accept?
No distribution is maintenance-free: every system needs updates, backups, and occasional troubleshooting. The useful question is whether you would rather favor predictable changes or track newer software and accept that an update or application may sometimes need attention.
- If you prioritize stability, look closely at the distribution’s stable release and its update policy.
- If you need newer software, check how often releases arrive and how the project expects users to upgrade.
- Before installation, make sure you know how to apply updates, restore personal files from a backup, and find release-specific troubleshooting guidance.
Debian’s stable-versus-testing distinction is one concrete illustration of the stability-versus-newness trade-off; it does not mean every stable system is trouble-free or every newer release is unreliable.

5. Can you find dependable help for your particular problem?
Community size alone does not tell you whether you will find a useful answer for your hardware, application, or release. Check whether the project’s official material is current and relevant to the exact version you plan to use.
- Is there a current installation guide and a clear set of release notes?
- Can you find relevant reports for your computer, graphics card, Wi-Fi adapter, or other important device?
- Are your required applications documented for that distribution and release?
- Do troubleshooting instructions identify the release or software version they apply to?
This checklist is more useful than assuming one project has the best community for every user; there is no quantified comparison here that establishes a universal winner.

Compare your candidates before installing
For each candidate, write down the answers to these questions. If an important answer is uncertain—especially hardware support or a must-have application—test or verify it before replacing your current system.
- Do Wi-Fi, graphics, audio, sleep, and essential peripherals work on this computer?
- Are the applications and games I rely on available and functional?
- Does the release cadence and supported lifetime fit how often I want to upgrade?
- Am I comfortable with the steps needed to install drivers or codecs, update the system, and troubleshoot problems?
- Can I find current project documentation for my particular release and issue?
For the hardware check, a USB flash drive can be used to create live installation media; another suitable installation medium can work too. The goal is to test the candidate on your actual machine before making it your installed system.
