To stop your Android screen changing orientation when you turn your phone, open Quick Settings and tap Auto-rotate to switch it off. On Samsung Galaxy devices, tap the orientation control until it reads Portrait or Landscape. The exact labels and menu paths vary by device and Android version.
Turn off auto-rotate from Quick Settings
- Open Quick Settings. Swipe down from the top of the screen. On Google-documented Android devices, a two-finger swipe down opens the full panel at once.
- Find the orientation tile. Look for Auto-rotate. If it is not on the first page, swipe through the tiles.
- Tap the tile to lock rotation. On many Android devices, the tile changes from Auto-rotate to a locked state. On Samsung Galaxy, the label changes to Portrait or Landscape.
On a Galaxy phone or tablet, swipe down from the top right to open Quick Settings, then tap Auto rotate to lock the screen in its current orientation. Choose Portrait to keep it upright or Landscape to keep it sideways. If the control is missing, use the Quick Settings edit or pencil control to add it back. Use Settings if the tile is hard to find
On Pixel and other Google-documented devices, open Settings > Display & touch > Auto-rotate screen and turn the setting off. Labels and paths can differ on older Android versions and manufacturer-customized phones, so search Settings for “auto-rotate” if that path does not match your screen. Google’s Android instructions note that steps can vary by device.

Turning auto-rotate off prevents the display from automatically following the phone’s orientation; it does not force every app to show the same layout. Some apps are designed to stay in portrait or landscape, so a fixed orientation in one app does not necessarily mean the system setting failed. Samsung’s guidance also distinguishes the automatic setting from the orientation an app supports.

On Pixel phones, a manual Rotate control can still appear in a screen corner while auto-rotate is off. Tap it when you want to rotate the current screen. This documented option is specific to Pixel guidance and should not be assumed to work the same way on every Android device. Google Pixel Help describes the manual control.
If the screen still rotates—or stops rotating in one app
- Check Quick Settings again and confirm auto-rotate is off. On Galaxy, look for Portrait or Landscape rather than Auto rotate.
- If only one app behaves differently, check whether it supports the orientation you want; some apps keep a fixed layout.
- If rotation controls are not behaving as expected on a Galaxy device, Samsung advises checking for software updates and restarting the device. See Samsung’s troubleshooting steps.
A factory reset is not a reasonable first fix for this preference: Samsung warns that resetting erases personal information. Reserve it for broader problems after less disruptive troubleshooting.

Accessibility and foldable-device notes
Google Accessibility Help specifically recommends turning auto-rotate off for people using TalkBack because rotating the screen can interrupt spoken feedback. Read Google’s TalkBack guidance.
Some foldables can offer rotation preferences based on whether the device is folded or unfolded. Android’s platform documentation says posture-based settings are supported beginning with Android 13, with a refactored implementation in Android 16 QPR1; availability also depends on manufacturer configuration. These options are not present on every Android device. Android documents the foldable behavior and version details.
