Android Auto can use power faster than a vehicle’s USB connection supplies it, so a phone may lose battery even while plugged in. That does not automatically mean the cable is bad: the phone’s workload, the car’s power source, and heat can all affect whether the battery percentage rises or falls.
Why your battery can fall while the phone is connected
A USB connection can transfer data and provide power without supplying enough power to increase the battery charge. Stellantis Uconnect’s FAQ puts it plainly: “If your smartphone requires more power than the USB connection can give it, you may notice some battery drain.” It suggests checking the cable or closing power-intensive apps, but that guidance does not establish that either is the cause in every car.

Android Auto use is only part of the picture. Navigation, screen use, mobile data, audio, and other active apps add to the phone’s demand. The car’s USB port and the cable affect how much power reaches the phone, while temperature can limit charging even when power is available.

Check whether Android Auto is running over USB or wirelessly, then note whether the battery percentage actually drops during a trip. Connection options depend on the phone and vehicle; Google’s Android Auto overview explains the wired and wireless options, and Chevrolet’s setup guidance shows that details can vary by vehicle.

A falling percentage is useful evidence, but it does not identify the cause by itself. Compare like with like: the same phone, similar route and workload, and a phone that is not substantially hotter in one test than another.
If you use wired Android Auto, compare the car’s power sources
Some vehicle USB ports handle data and charging, while another outlet or a separate car charger may provide a different charging arrangement. Chevrolet’s Android Auto setup guidance describes USB charging while Android Auto runs in the background and a charge-only mode; available behavior depends on the vehicle.

- Try a known-good, data-capable cable if the phone disconnects, charges inconsistently, or the cable is damaged. Uconnect suggests checking the cable, but a new cable is not a guaranteed fix for a port that supplies too little power.
- If your vehicle has another suitable USB port, compare it with the Android Auto data port. Do not assume every port has the same function or output.
- If you consider a separate charger, verify that the car’s power outlet supports it, that the charger’s output suits the phone, and that the phone supports the charger’s charging standard. A compatible USB-C PD car charger is an option to assess, not a universal solution.
If you use wireless Android Auto, check charging and heat separately
Wireless Android Auto avoids using a USB data cable, but it does not ensure that the phone will gain charge. A separate wireless charging pad or car charger may supply power, and the phone’s workload and temperature still affect the result.

Volvo warns that using Wi-Fi and Android Auto together can make a phone warm faster; charging may stop until it cools. Its in-car wireless charging guidance also identifies case thickness, metal near the charging coil, and phone placement as possible obstacles. Those details apply to the vehicle guidance Volvo provides, not necessarily every car’s charging pad.

- Move the phone out of direct sun and give it room to cool.
- If charging on a pad, check that the phone is positioned correctly and that a case or nearby metal is not interfering.
- Reduce simultaneous power demand as a test, such as closing power-intensive apps. Do not assume one app or setting is always responsible.
How to tell whether a change helped
- Record the starting point. Note the phone’s battery percentage, connection type, and whether the phone feels unusually warm.
- Change one factor. For a wired setup, test another appropriate port or a known-good cable. For a wireless setup, check pad alignment and let the phone cool. Avoid changing several things at once.
- Repeat under comparable conditions. Keep the trip and phone workload reasonably similar, then check whether the percentage falls, stays level, or rises.
- Use the result to narrow the cause. If a different cable fixes dropouts or inconsistent charging, the cable may have been limiting the connection. If charging improves after the phone cools, temperature was likely involved. If it still loses charge on the vehicle’s USB port but gains charge from a suitable separate source, the original power supply may not meet demand.
These comparisons help isolate a factor; they do not establish a universal ranking of wired versus wireless setups or prove a particular wattage is sufficient. Charging capability depends on the exact phone, charger, vehicle, and conditions.

A compatible USB-C PD car charger may help when the phone supports that charging standard, the car has a suitable power outlet, and the existing USB supply is insufficient. Check the phone maker’s supported charging specifications and the charger’s output before buying. A higher-output charger will not necessarily overcome a phone that has paused charging because it is too hot.

There is no single Android Auto drain percentage or wattage that applies across phones and vehicles. Google’s device-specific charging specifications are not measurements of Android Auto’s power use, so the answer has to come from the actual phone and car combination.
