Stop-and-go adaptive cruise control (ACC) adjusts speed to help maintain a chosen gap behind traffic and can brake the vehicle to a complete stop. Whether it starts moving again on its own depends on the vehicle and how long it has been stopped. The driver must keep watching the road and remain ready to brake or take control.
What stop-and-go ACC does
ACC helps maintain a selected cruising speed and following distance from a vehicle ahead in the same lane. Stop-and-go versions extend that assistance to slow traffic: they can decelerate with the lead vehicle and, where the vehicle’s system supports it, bring the car to a full stop. Automakers may call the feature “Stop and Go adaptive cruise control,” “ACC with Stop and Go,” or “ACC with Low Speed Follow.”

The system uses vehicle sensors to estimate the lead vehicle’s distance and relative speed, then controls acceleration and braking. Sensor arrangements differ. Renault describes radar or camera information, while Honda describes a camera and millimeter-wave radar. These are examples, not a specification shared by every vehicle. Renault’s Clio 5 manual and Honda’s ACC with Low Speed Follow overview explain their respective systems.

There is no universal restart rule. Some systems resume automatically after a short stop; others require the driver to press a control or accelerator, and some change behavior after a time threshold.

- 04672579AA Adaptive Speed Cruise Control Sensor
Renault Clio 5 example
In the documented Clio 5 implementation, Stop and Go resumes without driver action if the stop lasts approximately 30 seconds or less. After a longer stop, the driver must press the accelerator or RES/+. This describes that manual’s system, not all Renault models or all stop-and-go ACC.
Honda example
Honda’s overview says ACC with Low Speed Follow can stop behind a vehicle and resume when the driver operates a steering-wheel switch or accelerator. Actual controls and displays may differ by vehicle.

- 36800-T7A-J13 Adaptive Cruise Control Module
Dacia Duster example
The Duster manual describes full-stop capability and says the driver must provide input after a stop of approximately 30 seconds. It also says automatic restart may be inhibited when the system detects a pedestrian in the area. These conditions are specific to the described Duster system. See the Duster manual’s Stop and Go ACC information.
What varies by vehicle
The feature name alone does not establish exactly what a particular car can do. Capabilities and operating conditions can vary with model, year, market, transmission, trim, and software. For an individual vehicle, use its owner manual rather than assuming that a feature described on a general manufacturer page applies to that version.

- Whether ACC can brake all the way to a stop.
- Whether it restarts automatically, requires RES or accelerator input, or changes behavior after a pause.

- Road, weather, and detection limitations, including warnings about stationary objects.
What stop-and-go ACC cannot guarantee
ACC is a driver aid, not autonomous driving or a substitute for attention. Renault’s manual states, “The driver must always be in control of the vehicle.” Keep watching traffic, be ready to brake, and take over whenever necessary.
Detection and braking are limited, and the limits depend on the system. For example, Dacia warns that its system does not trigger an emergency stop, may not recognize traffic lights or signs, and may fail to detect pedestrians or fixed obstacles. Do not assume that stop-and-go ACC will stop for every hazard or respond like an emergency braking system. Dacia’s manual lists these system-specific warnings.

How to check your car’s exact behavior
- Find the owner manual for the vehicle’s exact model year and market; confirm the trim and transmission if the manual distinguishes versions.
- Look up the ACC or adaptive cruise control section and check whether it explicitly describes full-stop capability.
- Read the restart instructions, including any stop-duration threshold and the stated driver action, such as pressing RES/+ or the accelerator.
- Check the operating-speed range, following-gap controls, and detection or road-condition warnings.
- Follow the manual’s instructions for engaging and resuming the system, and stay prepared to brake or take control.
