Stirling-PDF is a configurable toolbox for PDF work—such as merging, conversion, signing, editing, OCR, and redaction—that you can use through desktop apps or run on a server you control. Docker is the official quick route for a server, but it is not the only installation option. The right choice depends on where files should be processed, which tools you need, and who will administer access.
What Stirling-PDF does
Stirling-PDF brings a broad set of PDF operations together in one platform. It also documents an API and automation capabilities. Its available tools can change over time, so use the current tool list rather than relying on a fixed feature count.

There are two broad ways to use it: install a desktop application, or run a server instance and access it over a network. A server can be self-hosted, or you can connect the desktop application to Stirling Cloud or another remote server. Those choices affect setup, administration, feature availability, and where file processing happens.
Choose a deployment based on where processing should happen
| Option | Where processing happens | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop, local-only mode | On the local desktop for supported operations. | One person who wants desktop use without routing supported files to a server. |
| Self-hosted server | On the Stirling-PDF instance you operate. | People or teams who want a shared service and are prepared to configure and secure a server. |
| Desktop connected to Stirling Cloud or a remote server | Relevant operations may be sent to the connected service. | Users who want desktop access to capabilities provided by a cloud or remote server. |
The desktop application’s local-only behavior has an important safeguard: if an operation needs a server-side capability that is unavailable locally, the app blocks it and prompts the user rather than silently uploading the file. Connecting to Stirling Cloud or a remote self-hosted server changes routing; relevant operations may then be handled by that service. Check the official FAQ for the current routing description.
#1 Best Overall
- Scanner type: Document
- Connectivity technology: USB
- With Auto Scan Mode, the scanner automatically detects what you're scanning
- Digitize documents and images
Self-hosting means processing takes place on your instance, according to the product overview. It does not by itself guarantee privacy or security: those also depend on who can reach the server, how it is authenticated, and how it is configured.
Check feature availability before choosing an image or desktop setup
Do not assume every Stirling-PDF installation includes the same capabilities. The official versions documentation describes multiple Docker image variants, and desktop capabilities depend on installed dependencies. Some operations—including OCR and Office conversions in the documented setup—may require additional dependencies or a connected server.

- PORTABLE SCANNER FOR USE ON-THE-GO — The fastest and lightest mobile single-sheet-fed compact document scanner in its class¹
- QUICK DOCUMENT SCANNING ― This Epson ultra-fast scanner scans a single page as quickly as 5.5 seconds²; Windows and Mac compatible
- VERSATILE PAPER HANDLING ― Portable scanner scans documents up to 8.5 x 72 in; Also easily digitizes receipts and ID cards to make accounting, bookkeeping, and organizing simpler
- INTUITIVE, HIGH-SPEED SOFTWARE — Epson ScanSmart Software³ is a smart tool allowing you to easily scan, review, and save; Stay organized easily with the help of this Epson scanner
- EASY SETUP — USB-powered connect to your computer for quick and simple scanning; No batteries or external power supply required to operate portable document scanner; Standard Connectivity: USB 2.0
Before installing, identify the tools you actually need, then compare them with the current version matrix. This is especially important if OCR or Office-file conversion is a requirement: an installation that handles routine PDF edits may not have the dependencies those operations need.

Install a server with Docker, or choose another documented route
For server deployments, the official guide recommends Docker and provides a quick-start container command. Docker is a practical starting point if you already have a Docker-capable host; it is not required for desktop use, and the guide also lists desktop applications and manual server setup.

- FAST SPEEDS - Scans color and black and white documents a blazing speed up to 16ppm (1). Color scanning won’t slow you down as the color scan speed is the same as the black and white scan speed.
- ULTRA COMPACT – At less than 1 foot in length and only about 1. 5lbs in weight you can fit this device virtually anywhere (a bag, a purse, even a pocket).
- READY WHENEVER YOU ARE – The DS-640 mobile scanner is powered via an included micro USB 3. 0 cable allowing you to use it even where there is no outlet available. Plug it into you PC or laptop and you are ready to scan.
- WORKS YOUR WAY – Use the Brother free iPrint&Scan desktop app for scanning to multiple “Scan-to” destinations like PC, Network, cloud services, Email and OCR. (2) Supports Windows, Mac and Linux and TWAIN/WIA for PC/ICA for Mac/SANE drivers. (3)
- OPTIMIZE IMAGES AND TEXT – Automatic color detection/adjustment, image rotation (PC only), bleed through prevention/background removal, text enhancement, color drop to enhance scans. Software suite includes document management and OCR software. (4)
- Choose a host and deployment route using the official installation guide. Review its image-selection and persistence instructions before starting a server.
- If you choose Docker, follow the guide’s current quick-start command and configuration for your selected image. Keep the documented persistence settings so data that must survive container replacement is stored as intended.
- Open the instance and verify that the tools you need are available. If a feature is missing, check the image variant and required dependencies against the version matrix before assuming the application is malfunctioning.
- Before exposing a server to other users or to the internet, decide who should be able to access it and configure the server accordingly. Installation alone does not set an appropriate security boundary for every environment.
The official material reviewed does not establish minimum CPU, memory, or storage requirements, so there is no substantiated universal hardware specification to give. A dedicated mini PC can serve as an optional Docker host if you want an always-on machine, but the documentation does not require buying a new device or recommend a particular model.

The configuration guide documents three ways to manage server settings: through in-app settings, environment variables, or settings.yml. In-app settings can suit an administrator managing a running deployment; environment variables or a settings file may fit a deployment managed alongside other infrastructure. Follow the configuration guide for the current options.

If you enable Processor folder sources, review allowed roots and permissions before users start processing files. The Processor setup guide says the allowed-folder list is empty by default and that all signed-in users can configure processing folders under permitted directories. Only allow directories that are appropriate for every user who can use the feature.

Is Stirling-PDF the right fit?
- Choose desktop local-only use if you want supported operations handled on your own computer and do not need a server-dependent tool.
- Choose self-hosting if you want an instance you operate, and can take responsibility for its configuration, network exposure, authentication, updates, and user access.
- Choose a connected cloud or remote server if you want access to capabilities provided by that service and accept that relevant operations may be routed there.
- Check the version matrix first if your workflow depends on OCR, Office conversion, or another feature that may require image-specific dependencies or server access.
