Self-hosting keeps files on your instance only when you use the self-hosted tools and manage the surrounding network, integrations, and host appropriately; it is not a blanket guarantee that every feature keeps data inside your home.
What the Docker version does—and what “local” means
Stirling PDF is a PDF toolbox for tasks such as merging, conversion, editing, signing, OCR, and redaction. The project’s current documentation advertises 55+ tools; that is the publisher’s changing feature count, not an independently audited or permanent total. The project says self-hosted tools process files on your instance. That describes where those tools process input; it does not establish that a particular installation is private or inaccessible from outside. Your result depends on which route you choose for a tool, how you expose the service, any connected services or integrations, and the security of the machine and its backups.
When files may leave your instance
Stirling PDF distinguishes self-hosted processing from cloud and connected-server routes. Its documentation says desktop tools use a local backend where supported, while tools routed to Stirling Cloud or a connected server send their inputs there. Install Stirling PDF with Docker
The official quick start maps port 8080 on the host to port 8080 in the container and mounts ./stirling-data to /configs so configuration is stored outside the container. Run this from the directory where you want that data folder created:
docker run -d

-v ./stirling-data:/configs
docker.stirlingpdf.com/stirlingtools/stirling-pdf:latest- Install Docker on a machine you control, following the instructions for its operating system. The Stirling PDF quick start assumes Docker is available.
- Start the container with the command above. It publishes the container’s port 8080 on host port 8080 and keeps configuration in
./stirling-data. - Open the web interface at
http://localhost:8080from the host machine. To use it from another device, use the host’s network address and ensure your network rules permit access. - Choose the image variant that suits your needs. The standard quick start uses
latest; the project also documentslatest-fatandlatest-ultra-lite.
These are the project’s documented quick-start settings, not a hardened remote-access configuration. Exposing the service beyond the machine or trusted local network changes who may be able to reach it. A local Docker install does not require buying a dedicated computer if you already have a suitable Docker-capable machine. A server or mini PC can be an option if you want an always-on host, but the project’s documentation does not specify or test a particular hardware model.

- Limit who can connect. Port 8080 is published on the host by the quick-start command. Consider which devices can reach that host and avoid exposing the service publicly without an access-control plan.
- Check the processing route. Use the self-hosted route when you want processing on your instance; cloud or connected-server routes send inputs to those services.
- Account for the host and integrations. Local processing does not protect files from a compromised host, overly broad network access, connected services, or insecure backups.
- Keep configuration persistent. The documented bind mount places configuration in
./stirling-dataon the host. Protect that directory and include it in a backup plan if you need to preserve configuration.
When a commercial on-premises alternative may fit better
Mapsoft PDF Hub is a distinct commercial option, not a Docker alternative. Mapsoft documents its on-premises edition for Windows Server, with .NET, SQL Server, and IIS requirements, and explicitly says Linux and container deployments are unsupported. It also lists PdfHub Local as a Windows desktop app. That route may suit someone who specifically needs a vendor-supported commercial offering and can run the required Windows Server stack; it does not fit a Linux-container requirement.
