Differences between those channels can make sounds seem to occupy different positions across a listening space. Stereo is a channel arrangement—not simply sound coming from two speakers.
What is a stereo signal?
A stereo signal contains two audio channels: left and right. In the World Wide Web Consortium’s Web Audio API 1.0 Recommendation, stereo channel order is front-left followed by front-right. Mono audio has one channel; stereo audio has two.

The distinction is in the signal’s channel content, not the number of playback devices. If the same mono signal is sent to two speakers, both play the same information. Bose calls this arrangement dual mono. It does not carry separate left/right content that can create stereo placement. A stereo file remains a two-channel signal even if a later device combines it into mono.
How does stereo create a sense of space?
When left and right channels contain differences in level, timing, or recorded sound, the listener can perceive width and left-to-right placement. A sound shared equally between the channels may seem to come from the center between a properly positioned pair of speakers—a phantom center. Headphones deliver the channels to separate ears, making their differences easy to hear.

- Bookshelf speakers (pair), compact bookshelf design for small spaces
- 3-way, 3 driver bookshelf speaker system
- 5.12 in. woofer boosts low-end frequencies
- High precision tweeter for faithful sound
- Wide dispersion super tweeter create an expansive sound stage
The effect depends on the material and playback setup. A stereo speaker pair works best when the listener is positioned between the speakers; listeners elsewhere in a room may hear a less stable image. Stereo can help place music, film, or game sounds across a left/right field, but the format alone does not guarantee a convincing sense of space.
Mono and stereo: what is the practical difference?
| Aspect | Mono | Stereo |
|---|---|---|
| Channels | One channel | Two channels: left and right |
| Typical capture | A single ordinary microphone or other one-channel source | A stereo microphone, microphone pair, or other source with separate left/right outputs |
| Placement | Does not preserve separate left/right channel placement | Channel differences can create a left-to-right image |
| Common uses | Voice-focused recordings, public-address systems, or situations where listeners are spread around | Music, films, and games where left/right placement or width is useful |
Neither format is always better. Mono can be a sensible choice when clear, consistent voice playback matters more than spatial placement. Stereo is useful when the content and listening setup benefit from a left/right image.
How to record a microphone, guitar, or instrument in stereo
Recording one microphone or a mono source
Use a mono track for a single voice microphone or other one-channel input. A mono recording can be panned within a stereo mix later. Audacity recommends a mono recording for voice made with one microphone, and Focusrite notes that a mono input track can start centered and be panned afterward.

A stereo track in a digital audio workstation (DAW) is a track arrangement; it does not prove that the source was captured in stereo. Depending on routing, a mono source recorded to a stereo track may come out on only one side. For a single mic or guitar, choose a mono input and track, then pan it or apply stereo effects as needed.
Recording a source that already has left and right outputs
Use a stereo track when the source genuinely provides separate left and right signals, such as some keyboards or synthesizers. Check the instrument’s outputs and routing: not every keyboard or instrument is stereo. Preserve the left/right order when connecting and recording the channels.
Capturing an acoustic stereo image
A stereo microphone or an intentional multi-microphone technique can capture differences across an ensemble or acoustic source. Spaced microphones can create a broad image, but their signals may interact in ways that weaken elements when summed to mono. Shure describes coincident and near-coincident arrangements as alternatives, while Mid-Side provides a way to adjust width and retain useful mono compatibility.

Mid-Side recording
Mid-Side uses a Mid microphone aimed at the source and a bidirectional Side microphone positioned at right angles. The signals are decoded into left and right by combining Mid and Side: left is Mid plus Side; right is Mid minus Side, which requires polarity-reversing the Side signal for that channel. Raising or lowering the Side level changes the stereo spread.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen decoded left and right are summed, the Side contribution cancels and the Mid signal remains. Sound Devices explains this technique and its decoding in its Mid-Side recording guide. Correct routing and polarity are important to achieving the intended result.
Why is a mic or guitar audible in only one headphone?
A common cause is recording a single-channel source onto a stereo track or routing that mono input to only one output channel. Check that the input is assigned to a mono track, that the track is centered or panned as intended, and that the output routing sends it to both sides. Focusrite’s guide to recording a mono input into a stereo track explains how track choice and routing can affect which side carries the signal.

If the source is meant to be stereo, check that both input channels are connected, enabled, and assigned in left/right order. A cable, input, or routing setup that carries only one channel can also leave one side silent. These checks address signal routing; they do not turn a mono source into a stereo recording.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happens when stereo is played in mono?
A mono playback system combines the left and right channels, but the exact downmix depends on the system or format. For example, the W3C Web Audio API specifies one stereo-to-mono rule: output = 0.5 × (left + right). That rule applies to the Web Audio API specification; do not assume every device, codec, or playback system uses the same processing.
Check important mixes in both stereo and mono. Listen for parts that become quieter, masked, or absent after fold-down. Phase relationships between channels and the specific downmix method affect what survives, so a stereo mix should not be assumed to translate identically everywhere.

What equipment do you need to listen to or record stereo?
To hear stereo, use a playback chain that preserves left and right channels. Stereo headphones send those channels to separate ears. A positioned pair of stereo speakers can also reproduce a left/right image; placement affects how clearly that image holds together.
To record stereo, the source and recording setup must capture or provide two channels. A single ordinary microphone commonly produces mono, so it is not necessary to buy a stereo microphone simply to play stereo audio or understand the format. A stereo microphone or matched pair is relevant when you specifically want to record an acoustic stereo image. A DAW or audio interface is useful when you are actively recording or routing channels, but is not required for ordinary stereo playback.
