A stereo receiver is essentially a two-channel amplifier with a built-in radio tuner; an integrated amplifier combines a preamplifier and power amplifier, usually without a tuner. That distinction is a useful starting point, not a guarantee of everything a particular model can do: either type may add phono, digital, Bluetooth, network or TV connections. Compare the exact specifications against your sources and speakers.
What exactly is the difference between a stereo receiver and an integrated amplifier?
An integrated amplifier puts the preamp and power amp in one component, a configuration Denon describes as typically intended for two-channel stereo (Denon’s Amplifier Buying Guide). A stereo receiver generally combines stereo amplification with a radio tuner. Some models also include streaming and other connections, but those are not guaranteed by the category name.

Neither term means the same thing as AV receiver. A stereo receiver is for two-channel sound; an AV receiver is designed to handle audio and video and can power multiple surround channels. If you need surround sound or video switching, assess AV receivers as a separate category rather than assuming a stereo receiver will provide those functions.
Which features should you compare?
Use the labels as a clue, then check the individual model’s specifications. The table describes typical distinctions, not requirements that every product in a category must meet.

Manufacturer specifications illustrate why the label alone is insufficient. Yamaha’s R-N303 Network Stereo Receiver lists Wi-Fi, AirPlay, Bluetooth, optical and coaxial digital inputs, a phono input and FM tuner specifications. The R200A Hi-Fi Stereo Receiver lists AM/FM radio, Bluetooth 5.3 multipoint, a phono input, headphone output and A/B speaker support. By contrast, Yamaha’s A-S501 Integrated Amplifier lists optical and coaxial digital inputs and a subwoofer output. These are examples of specific models, not rules for every receiver or amplifier.
How to choose for your setup
Choose by radio and source connections
A stereo receiver is a practical choice if you want terrestrial radio built in and its listed connections match your sources. An integrated amplifier makes sense when you do not need a tuner and a particular model has the inputs and speaker drive your system requires. Either kind may provide Bluetooth, digital inputs, streaming, a phono input or a subwoofer output; verify each feature on the model page.

Check the turntable’s phono signal chain
A turntable needs a phono preamp before its signal can use a standard line-level input. Check whether the turntable has a built-in phono preamp and whether the amplifier has a compatible phono input. If neither supplies the needed phono stage, add an appropriate external phono preamp. Yamaha’s Hi-Fi Starter Guide also advises checking for a dedicated phono input or a built-in turntable preamp.
Match the TV connection and channel count
If you want to connect a television, confirm the specific input and supported format. HDMI ARC is available on some stereo integrated amplifiers, but it is not universal; many AV receivers provide HDMI and multichannel home-theater functions. Choose based on whether you need two-channel TV sound, surround sound, or video switching.

Compare power ratings on equal terms
Do not infer that one category is inherently more powerful from a model name or from wattage figures quoted under different test conditions. Manufacturer specifications give useful model-specific examples: Yamaha rates the R200A at 100 W + 100 W into 8 ohms, 40 Hz–20 kHz, at 0.2% THD; the R-N303 at 100 W + 100 W into 8 ohms, 40 Hz–20 kHz, at 0.2% THD; and the A-S501 at 85 W + 85 W into 8 ohms, 20 Hz–20 kHz, at 0.019% THD. These are the manufacturers’ stated specifications, not independent comparative measurements, and the differing conditions make them unsuitable as proof of a category-wide power or sound-quality advantage. Compare actual-model specifications and speaker compatibility, and consider listening evidence for the models you are evaluating.
