Pixel phones can save new photos and videos from the Camera app straight into Locked Folder, keeping sensitive captures out of the regular Photos view, albums, memories, and most sharing surfaces. This is useful when you want privacy from the moment an image is taken, rather than moving it manually afterward.
To use this option, you need a supported Pixel Camera and Google Photos setup with Locked Folder available on the device. Once enabled, the Camera app can switch between saving to your regular camera roll and saving directly to Locked Folder, so it is worth knowing how to turn it on, verify where new shots are going, and switch back when needed.

Locked Folder content has extra restrictions: it is protected by your screen lock, hidden from the main photo library, and may have backup and access limitations depending on your Google Photos settings. Understanding those limits helps prevent confusion when photos do not appear in your normal gallery, on other devices, or in apps that usually access your camera roll.
What Saving to Locked Folder Does on Pixel
Saving directly to Locked Folder changes where new Pixel Camera photos and videos land after you capture them. Instead of appearing in your regular Camera folder, Photos tab, albums, memories, or other visible parts of Google Photos, the files are placed in Locked Folder immediately. You still use the normal Pixel Camera interface to take the shot or record the clip, but the result is stored in a protected area that requires your phone’s screen lock, fingerprint, face unlock, PIN, pattern, or password to open.

- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
This setting is designed for moments when you already know a photo or video should stay private. For example, you may want to photograph personal documents, medical information, gifts, sensitive screenshots taken through the camera viewfinder, or anything you do not want showing up when someone scrolls through your main gallery. When direct saving is enabled, the content skips the regular camera roll, which helps prevent it from appearing in shared albums, photo widgets, highlights, search results, and automatic creations inside Google Photos.
Locked Folder content is handled differently from ordinary camera items. On supported setups, items in Locked Folder can be backed up if you have turned on Locked Folder backup in Google Photos; otherwise, they remain only on that device. They also do not behave like normal photos for sharing or editing. You generally need to unlock the folder first, and some actions may require moving an item out of Locked Folder before it can be used in another app. If you delete the Google Photos app data, reset the device, lose the phone, or switch phones without backup enabled, locally stored Locked Folder items may be lost.
When the Pixel Camera is set to save to Locked Folder, the change applies to new captures only. Existing photos and videos in your camera roll are not moved automatically. You can still move older items into Locked Folder manually from Google Photos, and you can switch the Camera app back to regular saving whenever you want. The main thing to remember is that this is a capture destination setting: it controls where the next photos and videos go, not the privacy status of everything already saved on your device.

Before you can send new Pixel Camera photos and videos straight to Locked Folder, make sure your phone, apps, and security settings support the feature. The option appears inside the Pixel Camera app only when Locked Folder is available and set up in Google Photos. If the setting is missing, it is usually due to an outdated app, an unsupported configuration, or Locked Folder not being enabled yet.
What you need
- A compatible Pixel phone: The direct-save control is designed for Pixel devices using the Pixel Camera app. Availability can vary by model, Android version, and app version.
- The Pixel Camera app: Use Google’s camera app that comes with Pixel phones. Third-party camera apps generally do not offer the same direct Locked Folder save toggle.
- Google Photos installed and updated: Locked Folder is managed through Google Photos, so update Google Photos from the Play Store before setup.
- Pixel Camera updated: Update the Pixel Camera app from the Play Store as well. Newer camera builds are more likely to show the Locked Folder shortcut in the camera interface.
- A screen lock on your phone: Locked Folder relies on your device lock method, such as fingerprint, face unlock, PIN, pattern, or password. If your phone has no screen lock, you will need to create one first.
- Locked Folder set up in Google Photos: Open Google Photos, go to the Library or Collections area, find Locked Folder, and complete the setup prompts. The exact navigation label may differ slightly by app version.
You should also check that you are using the intended Google account in Google Photos. Locked Folder is tied to the Photos app environment on the device, and account or backup settings can affect what you see. If you use mulle Google accounts, confirm you are viewing the correct one before assuming photos are missing or saved somewhere else.
Storage space matters as well. Photos and videos saved to Locked Folder still occupy storage on the device, and videos can fill space quickly. If your Pixel is nearly full, the camera may fail to save new captures or behave unpredictably. Free up space before relying on Locked Folder for a long recording session, travel day, or private set of images.

Settings to review first
- Device lock: Confirm that you know your PIN, pattern, or password, even if you normally unlock with biometrics.
- Photos backup preference: Review whether Locked Folder backup is available and enabled for your setup. Some users keep Locked Folder content only on the device.
- App permissions: Pixel Camera and Google Photos need normal access to camera, media, and storage-related functions to save and manage captures properly.
- Work profile or managed device rules: Phones managed by an employer, school, or parental control setup may restrict secure folders, app updates, backups, or camera behavior.
Once these requirements are in place, the camera should be ready to show the Locked Folder save option. If it still does not appear, restart the phone after updating both apps, then open Google Photos once and unlock Locked Folder before returning to Pixel Camera.

Once Locked Folder is set up in Google Photos, you can change the save destination inside the Pixel Camera app before taking a photo or recording a video. This setting applies to new captures only; it does not move photos or videos that are already in your regular camera roll. Make the change before you shoot anything you want kept out of the main Photos view.
- Open the Pixel Camera app on your Pixel phone.
- Look for the gallery thumbnail near the shutter button. It usually shows your most recent photo or a small preview tile.
- Touch and hold the gallery thumbnail to open the save-location menu.
- Select Locked Folder from the available destinations. You may be asked to unlock your phone with your screen lock, fingerprint, or face unlock.
- Take a photo or record a video as normal. New captures will be saved directly to Locked Folder instead of your regular camera roll.
On some Pixel Camera versions, the control may appear as a small folder or save-location icon near the top of the camera screen rather than only through the thumbnail. If you see a save-location control, tap it and choose Locked Folder. The selected destination should remain visible in the camera interface so you can tell where the next photo or video will go before pressing the shutter.
After switching the destination, use the camera normally. Portrait, Night Sight, video, and other supported capture modes can save directly to Locked Folder, but availability can vary by device, Android version, and camera mode. If Locked Folder is not offered in a specific mode, switch back to a standard photo or video mode and check the save-location selector again.
Keep in mind that this setting is easy to overlook later. If you leave Pixel Camera set to Locked Folder, future photos and videos will continue going there until you change the destination back. Before taking everyday photos, glance at the save-location indicator or long-press the gallery thumbnail again to confirm whether the camera is saving to Locked Folder or your regular photo library.

How to Confirm Photos Are Going to Locked Folder
After you turn on saving to Locked Folder in Pixel Camera, the quickest confirmation is what happens immediately after you take a test photo or video. Open the Pixel Camera app, capture a new photo, then tap the small preview thumbnail in the lower corner of the viewfinder. Instead of opening the regular Photos view, your phone should prompt you to unlock with your screen lock, fingerprint, or face unlock. That unlock prompt is the clearest sign that the new item was routed to Locked Folder.
You can also check from the Google Photos app. Open Google Photos, go to Collections or Library depending on your app version, then open Locked Folder. Authenticate with your device screen lock. The photo or video you just captured should appear there, usually near the top because it was just created. If you do not see it in your main Photos timeline, camera roll, albums, or search results, that is expected behavior for content saved directly to Locked Folder.
Quick checks after taking a test photo
- Tap the camera preview: If you are asked to unlock before viewing the image, the item is in Locked Folder.
- Open Locked Folder in Google Photos: The new photo or video should be visible only after authentication.
- Check the main Photos tab: The item should not appear in the normal timeline or recent camera uploads.
- Look for the Locked Folder camera indicator: In Pixel Camera, the save destination control should still show that Locked Folder is selected.
If your test photo appears in the regular Photos timeline, the camera may have switched back to the standard save location. Return to Pixel Camera and check the save destination icon near the camera controls. On supported Pixel models and app versions, this control lets you choose whether new captures go to the regular camera roll or directly to Locked Folder. Select Locked Folder again, then take another test shot and repeat the preview check.
Be aware that Locked Folder content behaves differently from normal camera items. Photos and videos stored there are hidden from the main Google Photos grid, memories, albums, search, shared libraries, and most third-party apps. They also will not be available through the regular Android photo picker in the same way as standard media. To view or manage them, you must open Locked Folder and authenticate on that device.

Backup behavior can vary based on your Google Photos settings and region/app version. If Locked Folder backup is turned off, items saved there remain only on the device, so losing, resetting, or replacing the phone can remove them permanently. If Locked Folder backup is available and enabled, those items can be restored when you sign in and unlock Locked Folder on another eligible device. To verify this, open Google Photos, go to Locked Folder, and check the backup status shown there before relying on it for long-term storage.
How to Switch Back to Saving in Your Regular Camera Roll
If you no longer want new Pixel Camera shots to go straight into Locked Folder, you can change the save destination back from the Camera app. This only affects photos and videos you take after switching back. Anything already saved in Locked Folder stays there unless you manually move it out from Google Photos.
- Open the Pixel Camera app.
- Look near the top of the viewfinder for the Locked Folder indicator, usually shown as a lock icon or a Locked Folder save option.
- Tap the Locked Folder or save destination control.
- Select your regular camera roll option, such as Photo Gallery, Camera Roll, or the standard Photos destination, depending on your Pixel model and app version.
- Take a quick test photo and open Google Photos to confirm it appears in your main Photos feed instead of Locked Folder.
Once the setting is changed, new photos and videos return to normal behavior. They can appear in the Google Photos timeline, be available to other apps that can access your media, show up in sharing sheets, and be included in regular cloud backup if backup is turned on for your account. They may also appear in memories, search results, albums, and device gallery views, depending on your Google Photos settings.

If you do not see the save destination control in the Camera viewfinder, check that the Camera app is updated from the Play Store and that you are using the main rear or front camera mode rather than a specialty mode. Some camera modes and older app versions may not show the same Locked Folder shortcut in the same place. You can also close and reopen the Camera app after unlocking your phone, then check the top toolbar again.
To move existing items out of Locked Folder, open Google Photos, go to Collections or Library, open Locked Folder, authenticate with your screen lock, select the items, and choose Move. Moved items return to your regular Photos library and may become visible in your timeline, searches, albums, and backups according to your current settings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Important Limits for Locked Folder Photos and Videos
Locked Folder is designed to keep selected photos and videos out of the normal Google Photos library, but it changes how those items behave. When Pixel Camera is set to save directly to Locked Folder, new captures do not appear in the main Photos tab, Memories, albums, shared albums, photo search results, or other apps that use the regular media picker. Someone browsing your camera roll, screenshots, or recent media in another app should not see them there.
Access is tied to your device screen lock or the authentication method used by Google Photos, such as fingerprint, face unlock, PIN, pattern, or password. To view the items, you need to open Google Photos, go to Library, open Utilities, then choose Locked Folder and authenticate. On newer versions of Google Photos, Locked Folder may also appear under Collections. The exact path can vary slightly by app version, but access always requires unlocking.
What to know before relying on Locked Folder
- Items are hidden, not separately encrypted by the Camera app: Locked Folder limits visibility inside Google Photos and other apps, but it still depends on your device security and Google Photos protections.
- Sharing is restricted: Photos and videos in Locked Folder cannot be shared directly from that folder. To send one, you generally need to move it out of Locked Folder first, which makes it visible in your regular library again.
- Editing and app access may be limited: Some editing tools, third-party apps, printing services, and media import workflows cannot access Locked Folder items unless they are moved back to the regular library.
- They will not appear in albums or Memories: Locked items are excluded from automatic creations, highlights, search categories, and album organization in the main Google Photos experience.
Backup behavior is one of the most settings to check. Google Photos supports Locked Folder backup on many devices and accounts, but it may be off depending on your settings, region, app version, account type, or administrator controls. If Locked Folder backup is disabled, items saved there are stored only on that device. If the phone is lost, damaged, factory reset, or the Photos app data is removed, those photos and videos may be permanently lost.

If Locked Folder backup is enabled, locked items can be restored on other signed-in devices that support the feature, but they remain separated from the main library and still require authentication to open. They also count toward your Google Account storage, just like backed-up items in the regular library. If you use mulle Google accounts on the same Pixel, confirm which account is active in Google Photos before saving sensitive photos, because Locked Folder settings and backup status are account-specific.

There are also practical Camera app limits. When saving directly to Locked Folder, you may not see the same instant availability in recent-image shortcuts, attachments, or gallery previews that you get with normal camera roll items. If you need to use a photo in Messages, Gmail, Drive, Instagram, or another app, move it out of Locked Folder first, complete the task, and then move it back if needed. For anything you cannot afford to lose, verify that Locked Folder backup is turned on or keep another secure backup method outside the phone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make Pixel Camera save only certain photos to Locked Folder?
Yes. In the Pixel Camera app, you can switch the save location to Locked Folder before taking private photos or videos, then switch it back afterward. The setting applies to new captures only, so anything you shoot while Locked Folder is selected goes there until you change it back.
Do photos saved directly to Locked Folder appear in Google Photos or my camera roll?
They do not appear in your main Photos view, camera roll, memories, albums, or shared folders. You have to open Google Photos, go to Locked Folder, and unlock it with your screen lock to view them. Other apps generally cannot browse or attach those files directly from the regular media picker.

Locked Folder backup depends on your Google Photos settings and account support. If backup for Locked Folder is off, those photos and videos stay only on the device and may be lost if the phone is reset, damaged, or replaced. Check Google Photos settings before relying on Locked Folder for anything you cannot afford to lose.
Can I move photos out of Locked Folder later?
Yes. Open Google Photos, go to Locked Folder, unlock it, select the items, and choose the option to move them out. After moving them out, they return to your regular Google Photos library and may become visible in albums, search, backup, and other apps depending on your settings.
What happens if I forget to switch Pixel Camera back to the regular save location?
New photos and videos will keep saving to Locked Folder, so they may seem missing from your normal camera roll. To fix it, open Pixel Camera and change the save location back to the regular photo gallery or camera roll. You can then move any accidentally private captures out of Locked Folder from Google Photos if needed.
Bottom Line
Saving directly from Pixel Camera to Locked Folder is a quick way to keep sensitive photos and videos out of your main gallery, photo grid, shared albums, and most other apps. Once it’s enabled from the camera’s save location controls, anything you capture goes straight behind your device lock instead of appearing with regular media.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse it only when you’re comfortable with the trade-offs: Locked Folder items may have limited visibility, sharing, editing, and backup behavior depending on your settings. If you want normal access again, switch the Camera save location back to the regular photo library before taking more shots.
