Stephen Wacker’s “New Mandate” for Marvel Comics: Every Issue Should Bring You Up to Speed

Stephen Wacker says every Marvel comic should orient new readers and make them want to return. Here is what he said, and what he didn't promise.

Stephen Wacker, described by AIPT as Marvel Comics’ new editor-in-chief, says every individual Marvel comic should give a newcomer enough context and stakes to follow the story, and enough hook to make them return. He called it a “new mandate,” half-jokingly, on Stone Kite’s Save the Chat podcast. AIPT’s David Brooke reported the interview on October 6, 2026.

What Wacker actually said

As AIPT reports it, Wacker’s point is about the job of a single issue. Looking back at how superhero comics once worked, he said:

“There weren’t jumping-on points. You just jumped in. It was a lazy river. And you could just come in, and the job of any individual issue was to bring you up to speed and then let you know the stakes.”

He then set out the standard he wants Marvel books to meet:

“I do think it is the responsibility of any single Marvel comic to have enough in there that will make you want to come back.”

That was followed by the joking “New mandate.”

What the mandate does not mean

Wacker did not claim a single issue can carry Marvel’s whole past. He said: “You don’t have 30 years, 50 years, 60 years of history in one single comic, but there should be enough that tickles you to get you back.” The goal is orientation and curiosity, not a full continuity recap.

The report also does not say that:

  • Marvel will stop publishing new #1s, zero issues or relaunches. AIPT contrasts his remarks with marketing built around those, but reports no decision to end them.
  • Every issue will be fully self-contained, or that continuity no longer matters.
  • The approach is already in place across the line, or has produced results. No sales, retention or new-reader figures were reported.

It is an editorial intention voiced in an interview, not a rollout plan. On Reddit’s r/comicbooks, one reader boiled it down to “Make every comic a jumping on point?” That is a fair shorthand, but it is informal wording rather than a formal Marvel policy, and “jumping-on point” has no single official definition.

His advice to readers: judge by the cover

Wacker’s advice to readers is simple: “Let comics be the one thing you, well, one book you can judge by the cover. Just find a cover you like and read it.” If the mandate is met, a curious reader should be able to pick up a Marvel comic that catches their eye and not feel lost. Since the standard is only just being stated, some issues may still lean on prior stories, and a cover is no guarantee of how much context is inside.

The internal side: “de-silo development”

Wacker also described how he wants editorial work to run. He tied it to what he called “de-silo development” at Stone Kite and to his new contact with other parts of Marvel, including licensed publishing. On staffing he said: “I’m trying to do that really with the new editorial staff down even at the assistant and associate levels, bring everybody in to the conversations much earlier than is traditional.”

AIPT presents this as an early view of his approach. Whether it changes the books on the stands remains to be seen.

A note on sourcing
