Stellar Data Recovery is a capable Windows recovery suite, but its value depends on matching the edition to your device and data-loss problem. Its free tier can preview files and, according to Stellar’s surfaced offer, recover up to 1 GB; more advanced tiers add disk imaging, bootable recovery, media repair, RAID, and other features. Independent reviewers report successful results in particular tests, alongside longer scans and workflow friction. No software can promise recovery, especially after data has been overwritten or a drive is physically failing.
What Stellar Data Recovery does
Stellar Data Recovery is a family of products rather than one uniform feature set. The Windows Professional product page identifies version 12.6.0.0 and lists Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8, and Windows Server 2022, 2019, and 2016 as supported platforms. Those details are specific to that product page and may change; check the current listing for your region and edition. Stellar Data Recovery Professional for Windows

Stellar describes the Windows Professional edition as able to recover deleted or lost files after events such as accidental deletion, formatting, or system shutdown; find files on missing partitions; and scan RAW or corrupt file systems using signatures. It also says the edition can recover from BitLocker-encrypted storage when you provide the recovery key. These are vendor-described capabilities, not guarantees that a particular file can be restored.

- Choose file types. Select the categories of files you want the program to search for.
- Choose a location. Select the relevant drive, volume, or location.
- Scan. Stellar describes Quick Scan as the faster first pass and Deep Scan as a more comprehensive, signature-based search for harder cases such as formatting or corruption. The Professional page also describes pausing and resuming scans.
- Review results. Preview files Stellar finds, where preview is available, to help judge whether they look like the files you need.
- Save recovered files. Save them to a different drive or storage device rather than back onto the source you are trying to recover.
A preview is useful evidence that a file may be recoverable, but it does not guarantee the saved file will be intact. Stellar’s surfaced free-edition offer includes full preview and up to 1 GB of free recovery; verify the live offer and terms before relying on that limit. Stellar free data recovery

Which edition fits your situation?
Stellar’s 2026 announcement describes the following edition distinctions. Features should not be assumed to apply to every platform or license; confirm what is included in the current edition you intend to buy. Stellar’s 2026 product announcement
| Edition | What Stellar says it adds or provides | Best fit to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Up to 1 GB of recovery and full preview, according to Stellar’s surfaced offer; confirm the current terms. | Checking whether results include the needed files and recovering a small amount of data. |
| Standard | Unlimited recovery, according to Stellar’s 2026 announcement. | Ordinary file recovery when advanced capabilities are not required. |
| Professional | Disk imaging and recovery from an unbootable system, according to Stellar’s 2026 announcement. | Windows recovery cases that need those additional tools. |
| Premium | Photo and video repair, according to Stellar’s 2026 announcement. | Cases where damaged media files need repair as well as recovery. |
| Technician | A tier aimed at RAID systems, according to Stellar’s 2026 announcement. | RAID recovery workflows; verify compatibility with the particular array and system. |
| Toolkit | A Windows-exclusive tier that adds further file-system and virtual-machine recovery, according to Stellar’s 2026 announcement. | Specialized Windows recovery requirements involving those features. |
Stellar also claims its 2026 release offers “up to 40% faster Deep Scans.” That is a vendor claim, not an independently verified speed result. A regular deleted-file case may not need an advanced tier; choose by the specific task and platform rather than assuming the top tier is necessary.

What independent reviews found
TechRadar’s Windows 11 test
TechRadar tested Stellar on a Windows 11 system with a 1.36 TB NTFS drive and a 22-file test set: 13 JPGs, four PNGs, two MP3s, two FLACs, and one torrent file. After deleting the folder and emptying the Recycle Bin, the reviewer reported recovering all test files, while noting that the scan took longer than expected. The review also described pause/stop behavior as awkward and noted a learning curve. This is a result from that test setup, not a general success rate. TechRadar’s Stellar Data Recovery review

PCWorld reported finding deleted, formatted, or repartitioned files in its latest-version tests across local media that included HDDs, SSDs, microSD cards, and virtual hard drives. It also reported partial recovery of overwritten dash-camera video, while explaining that ordinary consumer software cannot be relied on to restore a file in full after its sectors have been overwritten. PCWorld notes that imaging a drive first can reduce stress when the drive is making noises or showing errors. These observations are bounded to its tests and do not establish a universal recovery outcome. PCWorld’s Stellar Data Recovery review

Taken together, the reviews support Stellar as a tool that can recover data in some real-world test situations, but not as a guarantee. Recovery depends on what happened to the data, the storage device, and whether the relevant sectors remain readable and have not been overwritten.
Important limits and safer next steps
- Stop writing to the affected storage. New data can overwrite the sectors containing deleted files, reducing the chance of recovery.
- Do not treat a scan as a fix for physical failure. If a drive is making unusual noises or showing errors, further scanning can add stress. Consider professional recovery rather than repeatedly scanning a failing device.
- Use a separate destination for recovered files. Saving to the same source drive risks overwriting data you are trying to retrieve.
- Check encryption requirements. Stellar says its Windows Professional edition can work with BitLocker-encrypted storage when the recovery key is supplied.
- For an unbootable Windows PC, check the Professional workflow. Stellar describes creating bootable recovery media on a USB device, then scanning and recovering from that environment. The USB device is used to make the bootable media; it is not presented as bundled hardware.
Price and buying considerations
Published price observations do not establish a dependable current quote. TechRadar reported an observation of $59.99 for an annual plan. PCWorld described full retail annual rates of $70, $100, and $210 for Standard, Professional, and Premium, respectively, and perpetual rates of $130, $200, and $320 for those first three editions; it listed Technician and Toolkit subscriptions separately. The most useful buying test is to verify platform and feature compatibility, then use the preview or free recovery allowance to assess whether Stellar finds the files you need. If your case requires imaging, bootable recovery, repair, RAID, or specialized file-system support, verify that the precise edition includes that capability before purchasing.
Verdict
Stellar Data Recovery is worth considering for deleted-file and other logical recovery cases when its platform and edition match the problem. Its range covers more specialized needs, and independent reviewers reported successful recovery in their defined test scenarios. The trade-offs are that scans may take time, controls can feel awkward, editions differ substantially, and neither preview nor a successful test elsewhere can guarantee intact recovery from your drive. Avoid relying on consumer software for overwritten data or a physically failing disk.
