First check the edition. “Arctis GameBuds” is not one universal Xbox-compatible model. The Xbox edition uses a dual-mode wireless dongle; the PlayStation edition is specified for PlayStation and PC, and SteelSeries says the Glorange edition is not compatible with Xbox. If you own the Xbox edition, re-pair its dedicated 2.4 GHz dongle. Bluetooth pairing is a separate mode and is not a way to convert an incompatible edition into an Xbox headset.
Use the steps below in order: identify the exact model, confirm the correct transmitter, re-pair the buds if necessary, then use a factory reset only as an escalation. The LED color matters: blue indicates the Bluetooth stage, while green indicates 2.4 GHz pairing mode.

Why won’t my Arctis GameBuds connect to my Xbox?
The most common explanation is an edition mismatch rather than a failed pairing. SteelSeries sells GameBuds variants with different platform support, and the transmitter is model-specific. The product name alone does not prove that your pair supports Xbox.

SteelSeries’ Xbox manual and support pages describe the Xbox model as the one with a dual-mode dongle, while the PlayStation model is described for PlayStation and PC. If the packaging, purchase record or dongle marking does not clearly identify the Xbox edition, resolve that uncertainty before trying connection fixes.

Identify the exact GameBuds edition
Check the packaging and purchase record
Look for the full product name rather than the shared “Arctis GameBuds” branding. The box, order confirmation and model label should indicate whether the product is for Xbox or PlayStation. Keep the exact wording available if you contact support; edition names and model markings are more useful than a description such as “black GameBuds.”
If you bought the earbuds used, ask for a photograph of the original box and dongle instead of relying on the seller’s abbreviated listing title. A listing that says only “Arctis GameBuds” leaves the platform edition unresolved. Record the model information before discarding packaging, because support may need it to identify a transmitter.
Inspect the dongle
Confirm that the transmitter came with the earbuds and matches the edition. The Xbox path depends on the Xbox model’s dedicated 2.4 GHz dongle. A dongle that came with a PlayStation model is not evidence that the earbuds can operate on Xbox, and a third-party USB transmitter is not a substitute.
Do not infer compatibility from the connector alone. A USB transmitter can physically fit the console while still being electronically dedicated to another headset family or platform edition. The relevant question is whether SteelSeries identifies that transmitter for your exact GameBuds model.
Interpret the result
- Xbox edition: continue with the 2.4 GHz steps below. SteelSeries says GameBuds normally arrive already paired to their dongle, so manual pairing is mainly needed after that relationship has been lost.
- PlayStation edition: the available SteelSeries comparison identifies it for PlayStation and PC. Do not treat Xbox pairing instructions for the Xbox edition as a conversion method.
- Glorange: SteelSeries explicitly states, “The Arctis GameBuds Glorange are not compatible with Xbox.” No reset, Bluetooth mode or alternate transmitter changes that compatibility status.
- Edition cannot be identified: pause troubleshooting and ask SteelSeries support to identify the model from the serial number, packaging and dongle markings.
How the Xbox wireless connection is supposed to work
For the Xbox edition, the documented console connection is through the supplied 2.4 GHz dongle, not a direct Bluetooth pairing to the console. The GameBuds are normally paired to that transmitter when shipped. Bluetooth is available as a separate connection mode for compatible devices, but the Bluetooth instructions do not establish it as an alternative Xbox-console path.
The dual-mode description refers to the Xbox edition’s transmitter supporting its platform-specific wireless functions and Bluetooth mode. It does not mean that every GameBuds dongle is interchangeable or that the PlayStation version can be switched into Xbox mode. Keep the dongle and earbuds from the same package together while troubleshooting.

The Xbox manual is available from SteelSeries’ Arctis GameBuds for Xbox guide. The detailed re-pair sequence below comes from SteelSeries’ 2.4 GHz pairing article.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow do I re-pair Arctis GameBuds to the dongle?
Use this procedure when you have confirmed that the earbuds are the Xbox edition but they no longer communicate with their original 2.4 GHz transmitter. Follow the LED colors in order: blue is an intermediate Bluetooth-pairing indication; green is the 2.4 GHz pairing mode you need for the dongle.
- Put both earbuds in the charging case. Leave them in the case while starting the sequence. Starting with only one bud outside the case can make the expected indication difficult to interpret.
- Start the earbud pairing stage. Hold the button on either the left or right earbud for three seconds, then release it. The cited SteelSeries procedure says the buds enter a Bluetooth pairing stage and the LED blinks blue.
- Switch from Bluetooth stage to 2.4 GHz stage. Press and hold one earbud button for one second again. The LED should blink green, indicating 2.4 GHz pairing mode. If you stop while it is blinking blue, you have not yet selected the dongle mode.
- Connect the dongle. Plug the GameBuds dongle into the device. SteelSeries’ article refers to a PS4 or “another device” when describing this step; it does not publish a console-specific Xbox re-pair sequence on that page.
- Hold the dongle button for three seconds. Keep the button pressed for the full three seconds, then allow the earbuds and transmitter to complete pairing.
SteelSeries documents this sequence in How do I pair my Arctis GameBuds with the 2.4 GHz dongle?. Once the dongle and buds are paired, reconnect the transmitter to the intended Xbox setup using the hardware guide for your console. The pairing article itself does not claim that every console-side detection or audio-setting step is covered.
Read the LED sequence correctly
| Indication | Meaning in the documented sequence | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Blue blinking | Bluetooth pairing stage | Hold one earbud button for one second again to move to 2.4 GHz mode. |
| Green blinking | 2.4 GHz pairing mode | With the dongle connected, hold its button for three seconds. |
These colors describe the pairing modes, not a guarantee that the Xbox has accepted the connection. A green indication followed by no console audio can still require console-side support, a correct transmitter check or hardware diagnosis.
If the LED never reaches green
- Return both buds to the case and restart the sequence from the three-second hold.
- Make sure the second hold is one second, not another three-second hold; the green indication is the required 2.4 GHz stage.
- Verify that the transmitter is the one supplied for the Xbox edition.
- If the buds remain in blue Bluetooth mode, do not continue treating that state as a dongle pairing. Repeat the mode change before holding the dongle button.
- Write down exactly which color appears and at which step. That detail is more useful to support than saying only that the buds “do not connect.”
Can I connect Arctis GameBuds to Xbox with Bluetooth?
Bluetooth pairing is separate from the Xbox dongle procedure. SteelSeries’ Bluetooth instructions say to place both buds in the case, hold an earbud button for three seconds and wait for a blue blinking LED; you then finish pairing from the other device’s Bluetooth settings. The complete instructions are at SteelSeries’ Bluetooth pairing guide.

- For the Xbox edition’s documented wireless console route, use its 2.4 GHz transmitter and the green-indicator pairing stage.
- If your phone or computer sees the buds over Bluetooth, that confirms only Bluetooth discovery; it does not prove Xbox-console compatibility or dongle pairing.
Reset the GameBuds only after pairing recovery fails
A factory reset is an escalation, not the first step. Try the edition check and 2.4 GHz re-pairing procedure first. SteelSeries provides two reset routes in its Arctis GameBuds reset guide.
Arctis Companion App
- Connect the GameBuds to the Arctis Companion App.
- Open Settings.
- Select Restore Factory Defaults.
SteelSeries GG on a computer
- Open SteelSeries GG on a PC or Mac.
- Open Engine.
- Select Arctis GameBuds.
- Choose Restore Factory Defaults.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
The reset guide does not specify exactly which stored settings or pairings are erased. After the reset finishes, repeat the applicable official pairing process rather than assuming the previous dongle relationship is still present. A reset also cannot change a PlayStation or Glorange model into the Xbox edition; it only restores the device’s software defaults.
What if the dongle is missing, wrong or appears faulty?
Do not buy a generic “Xbox” USB transmitter expecting it to add Xbox support. SteelSeries says wireless transmitters are model-specific and that each headset requires its dedicated transmitter. Its explanation is in Which wireless transmitter will work with my headset?.
This has two practical consequences:
- A PlayStation or Glorange pair cannot be converted into an Xbox pair by purchasing a different dongle.
- An Xbox pair with a lost or defective transmitter needs a transmitter identified for that exact model, not merely one that fits a USB port.
- A transmitter from another SteelSeries headset should not be assumed to work just because it uses 2.4 GHz or has an Xbox label.
The GameBuds support material does not establish a particular replacement-dongle listing or current availability. Contact SteelSeries support with the exact edition, model markings and proof of purchase so it can identify the correct replacement path. If you are considering a new purchase, choose the product explicitly labeled for Xbox rather than buying an adapter as a conversion attempt.
General checks for console symptoms after pairing
The GameBuds pages cited above do not provide a complete Xbox checklist for every symptom, such as a dongle not being detected, missing audio, microphone failure or intermittent disconnections. Do not mistake advice for another headset model for a GameBuds-specific procedure.
For orientation only, SteelSeries’ separate Arctis 7X Xbox setup page lists general checks such as reconnecting the dongle, restarting the headset, checking mute and volume controls, and reviewing Xbox audio settings. Those checks are published for the Arctis 7X, not the GameBuds. They can help you describe the symptom to support, but they do not prove that a GameBuds issue has the same cause or remedy.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
When contacting support, separate three observations: whether the console detects the USB transmitter, whether the earbuds show the expected blue or green mode, and whether audio or microphone functions are missing after pairing. This prevents a Bluetooth discovery result from being confused with a successful Xbox wireless connection.
When to stop repeating the pairing sequence
- You have confirmed the Xbox edition and its original transmitter, but the dongle never enters or completes pairing.
- The earbuds show the expected mode indications yet the console still does not recognize the transmitter.
- A factory reset and a fresh official pairing attempt produce the same result.
- The dongle or an earbud has physical damage, will not power, or behaves differently from the documented LED sequence.
- You have verified that the transmitter belongs to the model but cannot establish whether the failure is console detection, audio routing or microphone operation.
At that point, give SteelSeries support the exact edition, dongle markings, LED behavior, console model and the steps already completed. That information distinguishes a compatibility mismatch from a transmitter or earbud fault without relying on an unsupported generic adapter.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Buying or replacing the product
If your current earbuds are the PlayStation or Glorange edition and you need Xbox support, the honest hardware route is an Xbox-specific GameBuds model, not a replacement dongle. Confirm the exact product name before ordering. Availability, pricing and retailer stock can change, and the support pages do not verify a particular store listing.
If you already own the Xbox edition but lost the transmitter, ask SteelSeries whether a dedicated replacement is available for your model. Provide the model details first; do not assume that an “X” transmitter or another GameBuds dongle is interchangeable. This avoids paying for an adapter that cannot establish the required wireless link.
A concise decision path
- Identify the edition. The Xbox edition is the model described for Xbox and has a dual-mode dongle; Glorange is explicitly excluded, and PlayStation is described for PlayStation and PC.
- If it is not the Xbox edition, stop. Bluetooth, a reset or another dongle will not add the missing platform compatibility.
- If it is the Xbox edition, use its 2.4 GHz dongle. It should normally already be paired.
- If pairing was lost, follow the LED sequence. Blue is the intermediate Bluetooth stage; switch to green for 2.4 GHz, then hold the dongle button for three seconds.
- Reset only if that fails. Use Restore Factory Defaults in the Companion App or in GG, then repeat the appropriate pairing procedure.
- Escalate hardware or console-specific failures. SteelSeries’ GameBuds pages do not publish a complete Xbox symptom checklist or a universal replacement-dongle listing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why won’t my Arctis GameBuds connect to my Xbox?
First verify that they are the Xbox edition. SteelSeries describes the Xbox model as using a dual-mode dongle, while the PlayStation model is described for PlayStation and PC. Glorange is explicitly not compatible with Xbox. If yours is the Xbox edition, use its dedicated 2.4 GHz dongle and re-pair it with the blue-then-green LED sequence.

Can I connect Arctis GameBuds to Xbox with Bluetooth?
SteelSeries documents Bluetooth as a separate pairing mode, identified by a blue blinking LED. The Bluetooth instructions do not establish Bluetooth as a substitute for the Xbox edition’s 2.4 GHz dongle, so use the dongle for the documented Xbox connection.

How do I re-pair Arctis GameBuds to the dongle?
Put both buds in the case, hold either earbud button for three seconds and release, then hold one earbud button for one second to reach green 2.4 GHz mode. Plug in the dongle and hold its button for three seconds.
What does a blue blinking GameBuds LED mean?
Blue indicates the Bluetooth pairing stage in SteelSeries’ documented sequence. For dongle pairing, continue by holding an earbud button for one second again and wait for the green 2.4 GHz indication.
What does a green blinking GameBuds LED mean?
Green indicates 2.4 GHz pairing mode. Once green is blinking, connect the correct dongle and hold its button for three seconds to attempt pairing.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will a different SteelSeries dongle make PlayStation GameBuds work on Xbox?
No. SteelSeries says each headset requires its dedicated transmitter. A different or generic dongle does not add Xbox compatibility to the PlayStation or Glorange edition.
Can a factory reset fix an Xbox incompatibility?
No. A reset restores factory defaults but cannot change the hardware edition. Use the Arctis Companion App’s Settings > Restore Factory Defaults option, or SteelSeries GG on a PC or Mac through Engine, only after checking the edition and trying official re-pairing.
What should I give SteelSeries support if pairing still fails?
Provide the exact edition, model and dongle markings, console model, LED colors and the precise step where pairing stops. Mention whether the console detects the transmitter and whether the failure affects audio, microphone or both.
The Bottom Line
Confirm the exact edition before troubleshooting. Only the Xbox model’s dedicated dual-mode 2.4 GHz dongle is the documented Xbox route; PlayStation and Glorange models cannot be converted with Bluetooth, a reset or another transmitter. For an Xbox pair that lost its connection, use the case-and-button sequence, move from blue Bluetooth mode to green 2.4 GHz mode, then hold the dongle button for three seconds. Reset through the Companion App or SteelSeries GG only afterward, and contact SteelSeries when the correct hardware still will not pair.
