A Vive update that has started should be allowed to finish without unplugging any Vive component. If the update has failed, Valve’s documented Vive recovery is to remove SteamVR’s USB devices, reconnect the Link Box, and restart SteamVR. Index owners should use the Index-specific cable, power, driver, and support checks instead; Valve does not document the Vive USB-reset procedure as an Index firmware recovery method.
Start by classifying the failure
The safest next step depends on the exact state shown by SteamVR. “SteamVR headset won’t update,” “firmware update failed,” and “headset not detected after update” can describe different problems.

- Update still progressing: leave the headset and its cables connected. Do not power off the headset, unplug the Link Box, close SteamVR, or restart the computer unless SteamVR itself instructs you to do so.
- Update reports failure: follow the model-specific recovery path below. The documented USB-device reset is for HTC Vive.
- Update appears complete but the headset is unavailable: troubleshoot USB, power, video, drivers, and tether connections before attempting another firmware action.
- Headset shows persistent blinking red LEDs: on Valve Index, Valve treats this as a possible firmware problem and directs the owner to Steam Support.
Write down the headset model, the exact SteamVR message, the LED color and pattern, and whether Windows still detects the headset over USB or DisplayPort. Those details determine which branch is appropriate and make a support request faster.

Valve’s Vive support guidance is explicit: pending firmware updates should fully complete, and Vive components must not be unplugged or interrupted during the process. A progress screen can appear stalled while the headset, controllers, or wireless hardware completes separate operations. Interrupting power or data at that point can leave the device in a worse state than the original connection problem.

What to do
- Keep the headset, Link Box, USB cable, video cable, and power connected.
- Leave SteamVR open and allow the update process to finish.
- Avoid switching USB ports, restarting Windows, launching another firmware utility, or repeatedly clicking an update button while the operation is active.
- Only begin recovery after SteamVR clearly reports failure or the process has ended and the headset remains unavailable.
If the application stops responding completely, record the visible message and LED state before closing anything. That information distinguishes an interrupted update from a normal detection failure.
Recover a failed HTC Vive update
For a failed Vive firmware update, Valve documents a SteamVR USB-device reset. This removes SteamVR’s stored USB device entries so that the Link Box can be detected again when SteamVR starts. Perform the steps in this order.
- Disconnect the Vive from the PC. Unplug all Link Box cables that connect to the computer. Leave the Link Box’s power arrangement as it is unless SteamVR’s instructions require otherwise, but ensure the PC-side connections are removed.
- Open SteamVR settings. Start SteamVR, open the SteamVR menu, choose Settings, and select Developer. If Developer settings are hidden, enable the option that reveals them.
- Remove the stored USB entries. Select Remove all SteamVR USB Devices. SteamVR may ask for confirmation that the Link Box USB cable is disconnected; confirm only after checking that it really is.
- Wait for completion. Do not reconnect the Link Box while the removal operation is running. Let SteamVR finish and return control to the settings window.
- Quit SteamVR completely. Exit the application rather than merely closing its settings panel. Wait for SteamVR processes to shut down.
- Reconnect the Link Box. Reattach the USB cable, HDMI cable, and power connection. Make sure each plug is fully seated at both ends.
- Relaunch SteamVR. Start SteamVR and wait for the headset and base stations to be enumerated. If the headset appears, test tracking and audio before attempting any additional update.
This procedure resets SteamVR’s USB records; it is not a general firmware flasher and does not guarantee that damaged hardware will recover. Do not apply it to an Index simply because both devices use SteamVR.

General SteamVR checks after an update failure
If the Vive USB reset does not restore the headset, or if the symptom is “headset not detected” rather than a firmware error, work through the lower-risk software and connection checks.
Validate SteamVR’s installed files
- Open the Steam client and go to Library.
- Right-click SteamVR and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files (called Local Files in some Steam layouts).
- Select Verify integrity of tool files and wait for Steam to complete.
Verification replaces missing or corrupted SteamVR files. It does not rewrite headset firmware, so it is a file-repair step rather than a substitute for the Vive USB procedure.
Check graphics drivers and restart the software
- Install the current graphics driver offered for your GPU model, then restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Quit and relaunch SteamVR after the driver restart.
- If the room boundary or sensors are no longer recognized, run Room Setup again from SteamVR’s room-configuration menu.
- Restart Windows after completing the checks. A full reboot clears USB and driver state that a SteamVR-only restart may leave behind.
Do not repeatedly reinstall SteamVR or change firmware tools before checking the physical connections. Software churn can make it harder to tell whether the original fault was USB, video, power, or firmware.

Vive detection and USB symptoms
A Vive that disappears after an update can have a connection or USB-chipset problem even when the firmware itself is healthy. Use the headset’s SteamVR icon to reboot the headset when that option is available, then power-cycle the Link Box from the PC side.

Connection sequence
- In SteamVR, open the headset’s device menu and choose the reboot option.
- Disconnect the Link Box’s PC-side USB connection, wait briefly, and reconnect it.
- Try a different USB port directly on the computer. Avoid an unpowered hub while diagnosing the problem.
- Confirm that the video cable is connected to the intended graphics output rather than a motherboard video port.
- Restart the computer and launch SteamVR again.
Valve mentions the Inateck KTU3FR-2O2I two-port USB 3.0 PCIe card as something that has worked reliably with Vive in some USB-chipset situations. Treat that as a narrow optional hardware consideration only after trying another port and completing Valve’s reset steps. It is not a firmware updater, not a universal compatibility fix, and its current availability and compatibility should be verified before purchase.
Valve Index: use the Index path, not the Vive reset
Valve’s Index FAQ separates firmware-related symptoms from the Vive recovery flow. If an Index is unavailable after an update, inspect every connection layer.

Persistent blinking red LEDs are treated by Valve as a possible Index firmware issue. The documented action is to contact Steam Support. Valve’s Index guidance does not provide a separate firmware-recovery sequence equivalent to the Vive USB-device removal, so do not disconnect components during an active update or transplant the Vive instructions by analogy.
Choose the least risky step for your symptom
| Symptom | First action | What to avoid | Escalation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Update is still progressing | Keep every component connected and wait for completion. | Unplugging, powering off, or restarting mid-update. | Support if it ends in an error or the headset becomes unavailable. |
| Vive says firmware update failed | Remove all SteamVR USB Devices, quit SteamVR, reconnect USB/HDMI/power, and relaunch. | Applying the procedure while the Link Box USB cable is still connected during removal. | Provide the exact error and LED state to Steam Support. |
| Vive is not detected over USB | Reboot the headset, power-cycle the Link Box, try another PC USB port, then restart Windows. | Buying a PCIe card before trying the documented checks. | Consider chipset-specific hardware only after basic checks. |
| Index is unavailable | Check power, USB, DisplayPort, PC, tether, drivers, and restart SteamVR. | Using the Vive USB-reset sequence as an Index firmware fix. | Contact Steam Support if blinking red LEDs persist. |
What to include when contacting support
Support can act more quickly when the report describes the state rather than only saying “SteamVR headset won’t update.” Include:
- Headset model and whether it is wired through a Link Box or tether.
- The exact SteamVR error text, copied verbatim if possible.
- Whether the update was still running when the problem began or had already reported failure.
- LED color and behavior, including whether red LEDs blink continuously.
- Whether Windows detects the headset over USB and whether SteamVR sees a DisplayPort signal.
- Every step already tried, including the USB-device removal, port changes, driver update, and restart.
For an Index hardware request, Valve’s support flow asks for a SteamVR system report. Generate that report from SteamVR’s support or developer tools when requested and attach it with the symptom details. Do not omit the report if the support form specifically asks for it; it contains the environment information needed to separate a firmware fault from a driver or connection fault.

Preventing a repeat failure
- Use a stable USB and video connection before starting an update; avoid hubs and loose adapters during firmware work.
- Keep the PC powered and prevent sleep or hibernation until the update completes.
- Do not run multiple headset-management utilities at the same time.
- Record the headset model before following a support article. Vive and Index instructions are not interchangeable.
- If an update fails, stop repeated attempts and preserve the error text and LED state for the next diagnostic step.
Frequently asked questions
Can I unplug a Vive when the update looks stuck?
No. Valve says a pending Vive firmware update should be allowed to complete and that Vive components should not be unplugged or interrupted while it is in progress. Disconnect hardware only after SteamVR reports failure or the update has ended.
Does “Remove all SteamVR USB Devices” reinstall Vive firmware?
No. It clears SteamVR’s USB device records so the Link Box can be detected again. It is the documented recovery step for a failed Vive update, not a firmware flashing utility.
Should I use the Vive procedure on an Index?
No. Valve provides Index-specific checks for power, USB, DisplayPort, drivers, tether, and restart behavior. Persistent blinking red LEDs should be escalated to Steam Support rather than treated with the Vive sequence.
What if SteamVR works but the headset is still unavailable after the update?
Check the physical USB, video, power, and tether connections, validate SteamVR’s files, update graphics drivers, restart SteamVR and Windows, and run Room Setup if tracking configuration was lost.
Frequently Asked Questions

No. Allow a pending update to finish; disconnect only after SteamVR reports failure or the operation has ended.
Should I use the Vive USB reset on an Index?
No. Use Index connection and driver checks, and contact Steam Support for persistent blinking red LEDs.
