Rerun Room Setup when the virtual floor or play-area direction is wrong; restart the runtime or use safe mode for startup failures; and troubleshoot tracking, a black display, or stutter as separate issues. Start with the low-risk checks below, then follow the branch that matches your symptom.
Before resetting, identify what is failing
Note your headset model, the exact SteamVR status or error message, when the problem began, and any recent driver, firmware, or software changes. Also check whether the issue affects SteamVR startup, the image, tracking, room calibration, or performance. Steam’s support pages provide symptom-specific guidance rather than one diagnostic wizard for every headset.

Try these general checks first
Steam Support’s troubleshooting index recommends these baseline steps. Client wording and menu paths can change, so use the current Steam client if a label differs.
- Verify SteamVR files: In Steam, open Library > SteamVR > Properties > Local Files > Verify Integrity of Tool Files. Let verification finish and note whether Steam reports files that need attention.
- Check graphics drivers: Confirm that the graphics driver is current for your GPU and install an update if needed.
- Restart SteamVR: Close and relaunch the runtime, then check whether the same symptom returns.
- Rerun Room Setup: From the SteamVR status window, start Room Setup if the virtual space or floor position is incorrect.
- Restart Windows: Reboot the PC after the checks above, especially if SteamVR or a driver has become unresponsive.

My virtual position is different than my actual position
If your view drifts, floats, or appears in the wrong place, check tracking before changing room calibration. Open the SteamVR status window and see whether the headset and controllers are detected normally. Reseat the headset, link-box, and PC connections, and check that USB connections are secure. Confirm that tracking devices have power and, where applicable, can see synced base stations.

For reflective surfaces that may interfere with tracking, Steam suggests covering them if tracking loss persists. The measurements below come from Steam’s legacy HTC Vive troubleshooting guidance and should not be applied automatically to other headsets or tracking systems.
- For the Vive setup described by Steam, place base stations at least 6.5 feet high, angled down 30–45 degrees, and no more than 5 meters (16 feet) apart.
- Steam’s Vive FAQ describes a room-scale area of at least 2 meters by 1.5 meters (6.5 feet by 5 feet) and a maximum base-station distance of 5 meters (16 feet).
Frame-time spikes can point to CPU performance rather than tracking, so do not assume every apparent tracking issue has the same cause. See Steam Support’s tracking troubleshooting, its Vive troubleshooting guide, and the SteamVR FAQ.

The orientation of my play area is not correct
Run Room Setup from the SteamVR menu when the virtual room faces the wrong direction or its boundaries no longer match the physical space. Steam says advanced Room Setup options can also adjust orientation and other features. If the menu names differ in your installed version, follow the current client’s Room Setup controls rather than assuming an older menu map.
Floor position is too high or low
Steam says floor position is measured during Room Setup and can change if base stations are moved. Rerun Room Setup first. Steam’s issue-specific instructions also describe quick calibration under Settings > Developer > Room and Tracking; that path may vary with client versions.

- At the floor-calibration stage, place the controllers on the floor with their triggers facing upward to reduce wobble.
- If the floor is reflective, place a flat, non-reflective object underneath the controllers.
- If SteamVR offers a firmware update, let it complete. Do not unplug the headset or tracking hardware during an update.

SteamVR fails to start, quits unexpectedly or is unresponsive
Complete the general checks before isolating add-ons. If the problem persists, Steam documents a safe-mode launch that prevents some third-party drivers and components from loading.
- Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
vrmonitor://safemode/enableand press Enter. - Check whether SteamVR starts and remains responsive in safe mode.
If safe mode fixes the failure, a third-party component may be involved. Steam names Natural Locomotion and LIV as examples of utilities that can conflict in some cases—not as software that always causes problems. If safe mode does not help after the baseline checks, Steam directs users to contact support.

Steam Support’s startup troubleshooting instructions
Headset display is black (no video input)
A black image is a display-path problem, not the same as incorrect room calibration. Steam Support suggests enabling Direct Mode in SteamVR Settings > Developer and checking that the monitor and headset link box connect to the same GPU through working video outputs. These steps depend on the headset and PC configuration.

- HEADSET ONLY. (MAY NOT INCLUDE HEAD STRAP ADJUSTMENT PAD). Controllers and base station purchased seperately
- 5x IMPROVEMENT over first-generation PC VR HMDs.
- Check that the headset, link box, and PC video connections are fully seated.
- Try another port of the same connection type, or an appropriate alternative cable or adapter.
- Confirm that the GPU driver is current.

Low framerate / freezing
Use SteamVR’s Frame Timing graph while running a demanding VR title. Spikes can indicate CPU performance trouble; they do not by themselves prove a tracking fault. Steam also recommends checking GPU drivers, conflicting software, and PC or CPU thermal performance.
If the problem continues, Steam’s issue-specific guidance includes verifying the SteamVR tool cache. If verification fails, it describes deleting the local tool content and reinstalling SteamVR. It also describes removing SteamVR USB devices through Developer settings with the link box unplugged, then reconnecting it and launching SteamVR. Treat these as targeted troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed performance improvements, and follow the current client prompts carefully.

When USB problems persist
Try available USB ports and recheck the connections before considering extra hardware. Steam’s older Vive tracking guide mentions a USB 3.0 PCIe expansion card, model KTU3FR-2O2I, as having worked reliably in its testing for certain HTC Vive USB issues. This is a model-specific legacy suggestion, not a general SteamVR upgrade recommendation; current availability and compatibility with a particular PC or headset are not established.
