If you need Steam reviews for analytics, start with Steam’s official IUserReviewsService.GetAppReviews Web API. It is the documented successor to the deprecated Store review endpoint and supports paginated review retrieval with filters. For a hosted integration, SteamApis documents an app-specific reviews endpoint; Steam Index documents review history alongside broader app metrics. Neither third-party option is established here as a complete or equivalent replacement, so choose by the fields, history, access terms, and limits your project actually requires.
Choose a route based on what you need to collect
“Steam review data alternative” can mean replacing an old endpoint, avoiding some integration work, collecting reviews across apps, or combining reviews with player and app metrics. These are different needs, and the available documentation does not show that every service provides the same coverage.

- For direct access to public reviews and documented filters: use Steam’s official Web API.
- For a hosted endpoint for one app’s reviews: compare SteamApis’ documented endpoint and its access terms.
- For review information alongside app metrics: investigate Steam Index API, while verifying what its review-history data covers.
- For bulk review analytics through SteamDB: its FAQ raises the API question, but the available information does not establish a public API suitable for that use.
The official API is the clearest route to Steam’s review service. A third-party service may reduce integration work, but that is an inference from the documented access patterns, not a measured comparison of speed, completeness, or reliability.
Steam’s official API: the documented replacement
Steamworks documents IUserReviewsService.GetAppReviews as a way to retrieve reviews for an application. The required parameter is the app ID (appid). A Web API publisher authentication key is optional; Steam says a key associated with the app receives a higher rate limit.

What you can filter and retrieve
The endpoint returns review results in pages with a cursor for requesting the next page. Its documented options include language, sort and filter, review type, purchase type, playtime, Steam Deck, and hardware. It also adds Funny sorting and date-related filtering compared with the deprecated Store endpoint.
Steamworks documents day_range with a default of 30 days, a maximum of 365, and 0 for no limit. Treat that as a parameter specification, not a promise of a particular historical dataset for every filter or collection workflow.

Pagination, caching, and rate limits
Plan to follow the returned cursor and handle rate limits. Steamworks says anonymous responses may be cached for up to 10 minutes and anonymous calls share a lower rate limit. Calls that exceed the limit return HTTP 429. A publisher key associated with the app raises the rate limit, but the documentation does not provide a universal collection speed.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Paging behavior also depends on the selected filter. Steam says Recent or Updated filters eventually return an empty list when paging through all reviews. Helpful uses a sliding date window and is designed to continue returning results. For a collection intended to capture all matching reviews, choose the filter and paging strategy accordingly rather than assuming every sort produces a finite, stable snapshot.

Migrating from the deprecated Store endpoint
The old store.steampowered.com/appreviews/<appid>?json=1 method is deprecated. Steam’s API reference directs developers to GetAppReviews. The migration involves more than changing the URL: parameters are passed differently, string filter values map to enums, and the newer service includes additional sorting and filters.
- Replace the legacy Store endpoint with
https://api.steampowered.com/IUserReviewsService/GetAppReviews/v1/. - Pass the required app ID and translate legacy filter values into the new service’s documented parameters and enums.
- Read the response cursor and request subsequent pages; handle HTTP 429 and account for anonymous caching and lower shared limits if you do not use an associated publisher key.
- Check the selected filter’s paging behavior before treating the collected results as a complete or repeatable dataset.
A Steamworks Development announcement dated October 2 announced the transition, said the older method was scheduled to be disabled on October 22, and directed developers to the Web API. The surfaced announcement does not establish a year, so the date should not be used as a current shutdown deadline. It described the new method as one that “should basically return the same data,” while noting that requests change. See the Steamworks Development announcement and the current API reference for migration details.

Third-party services documented for Steam review data
| Route | Documented capability | What to verify before relying on it |
|---|---|---|
| Steam official GetAppReviews | Paginated reviews for an app, with a cursor and documented language, sort/filter, review-type, purchase-type, playtime, Steam Deck, and hardware options. | Design around its rate limits, caching, chosen filter, and pagination behavior. Review the official Steamworks documentation. |
| SteamApis | A hosted, cursor-paginated endpoint for reviews of a specific Steam app. Its documentation lists review text, author Steam ID, playtime at review time, vote counts, and timestamps; access uses an API key in the x-api-key header. |
Confirm pricing, terms, historical completeness, rate limits, and operational guarantees directly with the service. These details are not established by its API documentation. |
| Steam Index API | Documentation lists app metadata, review summaries, live player figures, and a review-history endpoint. | Establish what the history endpoint means, its coverage window, access terms, pricing, and limits before choosing it. Those details are not established by the Steam Index API documentation. |
| SteamDB | The FAQ includes a question about whether SteamDB has an API. | The available FAQ information does not establish a public API suitable for bulk review analytics; do not treat it as a direct substitute on that basis. See the SteamDB FAQ. |
How to evaluate an API for an analytics project
Match fields and filters to the analysis
List the fields and segmentation you need before choosing a source: review text, author identifier, review-time playtime, votes, timestamps, language, review type, purchase type, and hardware-related filters. Steam’s API documentation specifies several filter dimensions. Third-party documentation may list review fields, but do not assume it exposes the same filters or fields unless its current documentation confirms them.
Distinguish current collection from review history
“Review history” can mean different things, and the Steam Index documentation’s listing of a history endpoint does not establish its time span or completeness. Likewise, a cursor-paginated endpoint does not by itself establish how far back its data goes or whether a service preserves historical snapshots. Ask vendors for the history window, update behavior, and definition of a complete collection.
Best Value
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Compare access and operating constraints
For Steam’s API, account for cursor pagination, anonymous caching, rate limits, and the higher limit available with an associated publisher key. For hosted services, check key requirements, quotas, terms of use, availability commitments, and whether the service’s coverage fits your workload. Current pricing, uptime, data completeness, and processing speed are not established by the cited service documentation here.
Separate review analytics from broader app metrics
If the project also needs app metadata, review summaries, or live player figures, Steam Index documents those categories in addition to a review-history endpoint. That makes it a candidate to investigate for a combined dashboard, not proof that its review history meets a particular analytical requirement.
Quick Recap
Which option should you start with?
- Use Steam GetAppReviews when you want the direct, documented route to Steam reviews and can implement pagination and rate-limit handling.
- Evaluate SteamApis when a hosted endpoint is attractive and its documented review fields fit your app-level use case; verify terms, limits, and history before adopting it.
- Evaluate Steam Index API when combining review information with app metadata or player figures matters, after establishing what its history endpoint supplies.
- Do not select SteamDB as a bulk review API based only on its FAQ’s API question; the available information does not substantiate that use.
