The fastest way to improve a slow Steam Next Fest demo is to reduce GPU workload in the demo itself: lower resolution or internal render scale, then reduce demanding graphics options one at a time. Use an upscaler such as FSR only when that demo provides it. Treat V-Sync, frame caps and launch options as compatibility and frame-pacing controls, not guaranteed FPS boosters.
Next Fest runs as a weeklong event three times a year, but every playable demo is a separate game. Menus, engines, recommended settings and performance limits therefore differ. The procedure below gives you a safe starting point without assuming that one preset works for every PC or display.

Start with a repeatable baseline
Before changing anything, establish what “better” means on your system. Enter the demo, load the same area and perform the same action for about a minute. A busy combat scene, a hub with many characters or an outdoor view usually reveals problems faster than a quiet menu. Note the displayed FPS, whether motion feels uneven, and whether the image is already soft or blurry.
Change one setting at a time, return to the same scene and test again. Keeping the test location constant makes it possible to tell whether a change helped. If an option improves smoothness but makes text, foliage or distant objects unacceptably unclear, restore it and try a smaller adjustment elsewhere. Steam’s general guidance is that increasing resolution or raising video options beyond recommended settings can immediately reduce FPS; its official wording is: “Increasing resolution, or any video option beyond your recommended settings will have an immediate negative impact on your FPS.”

- Close downloads and other GPU- or CPU-heavy applications before testing.
- Use the demo’s recommended preset as a starting point when one is available.
- Test in the game’s actual gameplay, not only in a graphics menu or benchmark screen.
- Record each change so you can undo a combination that causes stutter or visual defects.
Lower resolution or internal render scale first
Display resolution
Resolution determines how many pixels the GPU must render. If a demo runs below your target frame rate, open its video or display menu and try the next lower resolution while keeping the same display mode. The image may look softer, especially on a fixed-resolution monitor, but the reduction can help when the GPU is the limiting component.
Use the demo’s own list of supported resolutions. A borderless-window game may follow the desktop resolution, while an exclusive-fullscreen game can expose a separate list. If changing resolution produces a black screen, wait for the menu’s automatic recovery, press the game’s reset-display shortcut if documented, or delete the demo’s configuration only when the developer’s support instructions explain where it is stored. Steam notes that unresolved resolution problems should be directed to the individual game’s support team because implementations differ.
Render scale
Some demos provide an internal resolution or render-scale slider. It lowers the 3D image resolution while leaving the user-interface resolution unchanged, so menus and text can remain sharper than they would at a lower output resolution. Reduce the slider in small increments and check moving edges, foliage and character details for shimmering.

Reduce graphics quality methodically
Use the demo’s presets as a map
Try the next lower quality preset, apply it, and retest the same scene. Presets commonly alter several options together, which is useful for quickly finding a workable range. Once performance is acceptable, raise individual options one at a time if you want a better image.
There is no setting that is always the bottleneck. A large open world may stress view distance and shadows; a crowded scene may stress effects or character detail; another engine may be limited by post-processing. Hardware also changes the result. Treat menu labels as clues rather than universal rules.
Lower the most expensive-looking options gradually
- Shadows and lighting: Reduce quality or distance if shadow maps occupy a large part of the scene. Check interiors and outdoor scenes separately.
- Reflections: Lower screen-space or ray-traced reflection quality when water, glass and polished surfaces cause spikes.
- Volumetrics and effects: Reduce fog, smoke, particles and lighting effects if combat scenes become uneven.
- View distance and level of detail: Lower them when distant geometry or a large horizon causes heavy GPU work, while watching for objects popping into view.
- Anti-aliasing and post-processing: Test lower modes if edges, depth-of-field or motion blur are costly or visually distracting. Disable blur only for clarity; it is not guaranteed to increase FPS.
- Textures: Lower texture quality when video memory is nearly full or when entering new areas causes hitching. Texture changes may have little effect on average FPS if memory is plentiful.
Apply one change, test, and keep it only if the improvement outweighs the visual loss. If a lower preset does not change performance, restore it and investigate resolution, CPU-heavy simulation settings or frame pacing instead of continuing to remove quality blindly.
Use an upscaler only when the demo supports it
Temporal upscalers such as FSR render internally at a lower resolution and reconstruct a higher-resolution output. Their quality modes trade image detail for speed. Choose a quality-oriented mode first, then compare balanced or performance modes in the same scene. Look for ghosting behind moving characters, shimmering on thin geometry and loss of fine text detail.

An upscaler is not a universal fix. The menu must implement it, and the result depends on the game’s renderer, your output resolution and your hardware. If the demo offers several technologies, compare their quality modes rather than assuming one is superior on every system.
Some developers publish game-specific instructions recommending an upscaler together with frame generation. Such advice applies to that particular title and its supported hardware; it is not a general Next Fest rule. Frame generation can make displayed motion appear smoother, but it relies on a sufficiently strong base frame rate and may add latency or visible artifacts. Follow the demo’s own documentation and turn it off if controls feel delayed or generated frames break during fast movement.
Choose a frame-rate cap and V-Sync for behavior, not promised speed
Frame-rate cap
A cap limits how many frames the game attempts to render. Set it to a value your system can hold consistently, such as the refresh rate of your display or a lower stable target. A stable 60 FPS can feel better than an uncapped rate that swings between 45 and 90. Capping may also reduce power use and heat, but it does not create performance that the hardware cannot deliver.

Use the in-game limiter when possible because it is tuned to the engine’s timing. If the demo has no limiter, a driver-level option may work, but its behavior varies by graphics hardware and driver. Test for input delay and frametime spikes after applying a cap.

V-Sync
Refresh rate is how often the display updates; FPS is how many frames the game produces. They are related but not identical. V-Sync coordinates frame presentation with display refresh cycles to reduce tearing. Disabling it can lower synchronization delay in some situations, but Steam warns that it can produce tearing or other visual artifacts. Enabling it may smooth presentation while introducing latency or a refresh-rate-dependent cap.
Compare both states on your own monitor. Pan the camera across vertical edges such as door frames and poles, then test controls during a busy scene. If tearing is distracting, enable V-Sync or use a stable cap that matches your display behavior. If input delay is more important and tearing is acceptable, test V-Sync off. Variable-refresh displays add another layer: use the monitor’s documented variable-refresh range and the demo’s own guidance rather than assuming a universal combination.

Be cautious with launch options
Steam supports per-game launch options, but they are not a universal graphics-tuning checklist. Steam’s documentation lists many commands that apply specifically to GoldSrc or Source games; a third-party Next Fest demo built on another engine may ignore them, reject them or behave unpredictably.

- Open Steam Library and right-click the demo.
- Choose Properties, then select General.
- Enter a launch option only when the game’s developer or support page documents that exact command.
- Start the demo and test. If it fails to launch, remove the option from the same field and verify the game files if the developer recommends that step.
Do not paste collections of commands from unrelated games. A launch option that changes resolution, renderer or API can conflict with the demo’s menu settings and make troubleshooting harder. Keep a note of the original field so you can restore it quickly.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
If FPS is low everywhere
- Confirm the demo is using the intended monitor and display mode.
- Lower output resolution or internal render scale.
- Apply the next lower graphics preset.
- Retest with shadows, reflections, volumetrics and view distance reduced individually.
- Use a supported upscaler and compare its quality modes.
- Set a stable frame cap and evaluate V-Sync for tearing and latency.
If only busy scenes stutter
Keep the resolution that gives acceptable clarity and test effects, shadows, reflections, crowd or simulation-related options one at a time. Lowering textures may help only when video memory pressure is involved. A cap can hide brief peaks by preventing the engine from chasing an unattainable rate, but it cannot remove a severe CPU or streaming bottleneck.
If the image is blurry or full of artifacts
Raise the upscaler quality mode or render scale, disable an aggressive performance mode, and check whether motion blur or temporal anti-aliasing is responsible. If text remains soft, restore the output resolution and lower a different graphics option instead.
If changing resolution breaks the display
Use the demo’s documented reset or safe-mode procedure. Steam indicates that persistent resolution problems vary by developer and should be reported to the game’s support team. Avoid guessing configuration-file edits unless the developer provides the file location and recovery instructions.

A sensible profile is the highest image quality that remains stable in the scenes you actually play. For a GPU-limited system, that may mean native output resolution with a lower render scale, or an upscaler in a quality mode plus reduced shadows. For a display-sensitive player, it may mean a firm frame cap and V-Sync even if an uncapped counter is higher. Save the profile if the demo supports multiple configurations, and keep a second profile for visually demanding areas rather than changing five settings during a session.
Because Next Fest demos are temporary event builds and individual games, there is no source-backed universal FPS percentage, preset or command that applies to every PC. Use the controlled sequence above, preserve the settings that improve play on your hardware, and consult the specific developer’s documentation whenever a feature or launch command is unclear.
