No single soil treatment is the best choice for every berry field. Steam can control weeds quickly under tested conditions, solarization needs a long, hot treatment window, and fumigation remains an important benchmark—but the available studies do not establish a non-fumigant method as a universal, wide-scale replacement. The practical choice depends on the target pest and its depth, local climate, equipment and labor, and the crop response a grower needs.
How do steam, fumigation, and solarization compare?
| Treatment | How it works | Timing and operating demands | What the cited berry evidence shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam | Boiler-generated heat is transferred into soil to kill pests. | UC IPM guidance gives a target of about 160°F for 20 minutes. Fuel, labor, equipment, and application speed are substantial considerations. | In a Salinas strawberry study, some steam treatments controlled weeds similarly to the study’s fumigation standard. Verticillium control varied with the steam treatment and soil depth. |
| Fumigation | A chemical treatment is applied to soil before planting; the cited Salinas comparison used methyl bromide and chloropicrin. | Requirements depend on the product, its current label, and location. The cited historical study does not establish current costs or permissions. | It served as the benchmark in the Salinas comparison and outperformed solarization alone for weed control in that study. |
| Solarization | Clear plastic traps solar heat in moist, prepared soil. | Requires a suitable warm-weather window, weeks of treatment, good film-to-soil contact, and repair of holes. UC IPM says 12–15 weeks may be needed on California’s central coast. | Trials support potential benefits for some soilborne disease and weed problems, but performance depends strongly on location, heat, and duration. |
These are not interchangeable treatments. The strongest direct head-to-head evidence here is from strawberry in Salinas, California. The raspberry evidence concerns solarization, not a three-way treatment comparison.

What does the field evidence show?
Steam: fast heat delivery, with pest- and depth-specific results
UC Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program guidance describes heating soil to approximately 160°F for 20 minutes. Under the application conditions cited in that guidance, steam achieved greater than 90% control of the listed weeds, including annual weeds and yellow nutsedge tubers, at a specified heat input. That figure applies to those weeds and conditions; it is not an overall control rate for berry-field pests.
Traditional sheet-steaming uses heavy tarps and can take about eight hours to treat fractions of an acre, according to the same UC guidance. The short heat-treatment target therefore does not mean the whole field operation is short. Fuel use, moving and managing equipment, labor, and the area that can be treated are part of the practical calculation.

In field studies conducted in Salinas in 2007–2008 and 2008–2009, steam raised soil to at least 70°C for 20 minutes to a depth of 25 cm. The researchers tested untreated plots, solarization, steam, steam combined with solarization, and a methyl bromide/chloropicrin treatment. Steam and the combined treatment controlled weeds similarly to that study’s fumigation standard; solarization alone was less effective at controlling weeds and reducing hand-weeding time.
Pathogen response was not uniform across the soil profile. Only certain steam treatments reduced Verticillium dahliae microsclerotia similarly at 15 cm, and the study found no reductions at greater depths. A result at one depth should not be taken to mean that steam reliably controls a target organism throughout the rooting zone.

Solarization: potential benefit where the summer window is long and hot enough
For solarization, UC IPM recommends covering prepared beds with clear plastic during summer, several weeks before planting. Soil moisture, film contact, and an uninterrupted period of heat matter: check that the film adheres to the soil and repair holes that could reduce heating.

On the central California coast, the guidance says 12–15 weeks may be required for pest-management benefits, making the method generally impractical there. These are regional guidelines, not a guarantee of a particular level of control in an individual field.

A Pacific Northwest study by Pinkerton, Ivors, Reeser, Bristow, and Windom solarized strawberry plots in 1997 and raspberry plots in 1998 from mid-July to mid-September. At 10 cm depth, the strawberry plots reached a maximum/mean of 48°C/33°C, and raspberry plots reached 46°C/29°C—7–17°C above non-solarized plots. The study reported improvements in specific disease and root-health measures; solarized raspberry plants also produced more fruit in year three. These historical regional results support solarization as a possible component of root-disease management, not as a universal substitute for fumigation.
Fumigation: a historical benchmark, not current product guidance
The Salinas study used methyl bromide/chloropicrin at 67/33% by volume and 392 kg/ha as its fumigation treatment. Those details describe the experiment, not a current recommendation, a statement about present-day legality, or label directions. Growers considering a fumigant need current crop-specific advice from local extension and regulatory authorities.

- 【Easy to use】This landscape pruning tarp is easy to use. You just unfold it, place it around the plant, then stick the adhesive strip in the middle and start trimming. If necessary, four corners can be erected through corner buckles to prevent falling leaves from blowing away. After trimming, tear off the strip, lift the four handles and take away the fallen branches and leaves.
- 【Wide range of uses】In fact, our pruning trees tarp have endless uses. In addition to landscape maintenance, it can be used as a fruit catcher tarp for trees. It is also suitable for protecting all types of outdoor objects from rain, hot sunshine and bird droppings, or keeping the floor clean when you paint objects.
In the 2008–2009 Salinas economic analysis, net returns were lower for the tested steam and solarization treatments than for the fumigation treatment. That is a result for one historical season, site, and experimental budget; it is not a current farm-cost comparison. The study also found no significant yield differences in 2007–2008, while steam yields were comparable to the fumigated treatment in 2008–2009. Those season-specific findings do not establish a general yield advantage for any method.
How should a grower choose a treatment?
Start with the problem the treatment is meant to solve, not with a method’s headline efficacy claim. A treatment that suppresses weeds may not control a deeper pathogen, and results from one crop or climate may not transfer to another.

- Identify the target pest and where it is in the soil. Use field history and local diagnostic advice to determine whether the main concern is a weed, pathogen, nematode, or a combination—and at what depth. The Salinas Verticillium findings show why depth matters.
- Check whether local conditions fit the method. For solarization, assess summer temperatures and whether the field can remain covered for the necessary weeks. For steam, assess whether equipment can deliver the needed heat through the relevant soil depth.
- Estimate operational capacity. Consider fuel, labor, equipment access, field size, bed preparation, moisture management, and the time available before planting. For solarization, include film installation, contact with soil, and inspection for damage.
- Compare expected crop response and economics for your own operation. The available yield and net-return findings are historical and site-specific; they cannot replace a local budget or a field-specific estimate.
- Use integrated management where appropriate. Sanitation, resistant cultivars, and other site-specific practices can complement soil treatment. They do not make the treatment evidence interchangeable across pests or fields.
What is known about newer steam work in California?
On August 6, 2026, the California Department of Pesticide Regulation announced $175,000 for a Santa Cruz County pilot evaluating steam in berry fields near schools and other sensitive sites. Field testing was expected to begin in summer 2026, with research continuing into 2027; the announcement does not report completed pilot results.
DPR also said its recent independent study found no existing alternative that can serve as a direct wide-scale substitute for chemical fumigants. The agency emphasized the need to understand which soil and climate conditions allow alternatives to work. Separately, USDA Agricultural Research Service project materials describe pre-plant steam trials in Watsonville/Salinas and Oxnard comparing organic and conventional strawberry fields and measuring pathogen populations and soil microbiomes. The project page lists January 31, 2026, as its end date; it does not establish that the trials remain active or provide published results.
The practical takeaway is to treat steam and solarization as options whose suitability must be established for the field, crop, and target pest—not as drop-in replacements with proven, universal performance.
