For an Epic Games Store giveaway, claim the game before the deadline shown on the offer; you do not need to download it before the offer ends. Epic says a claimed promotion game stays in your library permanently, subject to its license terms and the game’s own conditions. On Steam, “Free to Play,” “Free Weekend” and “Free to Keep” describe different kinds of access—not interchangeable promises that a game is yours to keep.
What does “free” mean on Steam and Epic?
A free-to-play game is an ongoing free-to-acquire game or base game. A giveaway is a time-limited chance to claim a game license at no charge. A free weekend or similar trial provides temporary access. The key question is not simply whether the price says “free,” but what entitlement the offer grants and what action you need to take.

Valve’s Steamworks documentation distinguishes Free to Play, Free Weekends and Free to Keep. Epic likewise separates “Free Giveaway” listings from “Free to Play” titles on its Free Games page. Read the specific offer rather than assuming every free listing works the same way.

No. Epic’s stated requirement is to claim the promotion during the period shown so it is added to your library. Downloading and installing are separate steps; the support guidance does not require an installation before the deadline. To make sure you have the entitlement, complete the claim while the offer is active and check the library on the Epic account you used.

If the promotion has already ended and you did not claim it, Epic says you cannot still get that promotion game for free. Check the current listing for any later offer; do not assume an expired giveaway is still available.
Does a claimed Epic giveaway stay in your library?
Epic says previously claimed free-promotion games remain in the library permanently. That means the claim adds a continuing library entitlement, not that you own the game outright or that play is guaranteed under every future circumstance. Epic’s Store End User License Agreement treats adding software to a library at no charge as a transaction and grants use under its terms.

Epic also distinguishes ordinary claimed promotions from limited-time versions, including beta or press builds, which may not grant permanent access. Check the offer’s wording: a temporary build or test is not necessarily the same entitlement as a normal free-game giveaway.
How Steam free games work
Free-to-play games
Steam says free-to-play games can be downloaded and played without a subscription or credit card. A Steam Wallet balance is needed only if you choose to buy in-game items or content. Free Weekends
A Steam Free Weekend grants temporary access, according to Valve’s Steamworks documentation. Do not treat a weekend trial as a permanent license: access may end when the trial window closes.
Free to Keep promotions
Steamworks uses Free to Keep for a limited-time giveaway or 100% discount, distinguishing it from a Free Weekend. Check the game’s store page and promotion details to confirm the offer type and claim window. Valve’s documentation is available through its Steamworks documentation search.

What “keep it” does—and does not—promise
A library entry is a platform entitlement to use software under applicable terms, not ownership of the game’s copyright. Continued play can still depend on the platform account, the game’s license and requirements, online services, and whether those services remain available. Neither a giveaway claim nor a library listing is an unconditional promise that a title will be playable forever.

Steam lets users add a non-Steam game to the client library, but Steam Support says that shortcut does not let Steam download updates or prove ownership on the Steam account. If a claimed Epic game is missing
First confirm that the Epic Games Launcher or store is signed into the same account used to claim the offer. Epic lists using the wrong account as a common reason for a game not appearing. Then check whether what you claimed was a normal giveaway or a limited-time beta or press build, since those versions may not provide permanent access. Where to check current offers
Giveaway titles, deadlines and eligibility can change. Consult the live Epic Games Store Free Games page for its current listings and displayed claim period. On Steam, check the individual game’s store page and the wording of the offer to tell ongoing free-to-play access from a Free Weekend or Free to Keep promotion.
