Steam Frame is Valve’s wireless VR headset, designed primarily to stream a Steam library from a PC while also running supported VR and non-VR experiences on the headset itself. Valve has published detailed hardware specifications and compatibility information, but those figures are not independent tests of image quality, comfort, latency, battery endurance, or how well individual games perform.
What is Steam Frame?
Valve describes Steam Frame as “a standalone virtual reality headset designed primarily for low-latency streaming of player’s Steam Library from a PC, while also supporting standalone experiences for both VR and Non-VR.” That description points to two intended uses: stream games from a PC, or run supported experiences on the headset. The published design is streaming-first, but it is not PC-dependent for every use.

The distinction matters: standalone capability does not establish that every Steam title is available or runs well on the headset. Valve’s Steam Frame Verified criteria and per-game labels are the more relevant evidence for support of a particular title.
Can Steam Frame play games without a PC?
Yes. Valve’s Steamworks documentation says games can run on the headset without a connection to a PC, in addition to supporting streamed PC VR content. It identifies both SteamVR and OpenXR compatibility for streamed and on-device applications. These broad compatibility statements do not guarantee that a specific game is supported or performs well.

For PC streaming, the headset is intended to access a player’s Steam library from a PC. Valve also describes foveated streaming. The published information establishes the design goal, not measured latency or a test result for a particular network, PC, or game.

| Component | Valve-listed specification |
|---|---|
| Processor | 4nm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3; ARM64 architecture |
| Memory | 16GB unified LPDDR5X |
| Storage | 256GB or 1TB UFS, with a microSD card slot |
| Battery | Rechargeable 21.6Wh lithium-ion battery |
| Charging and data | Rear USB-C 2.0 port; charge input up to 45W |
| Display | LCD, 2160 × 2160 resolution per eye |
| Refresh rate | 72–144Hz; 144Hz is experimental |
| Optics and field of view | Custom pancake lenses; up to 110 degrees |
| Fit targets | IPD range 60–70mm; maximum eyeglass width 140mm |
The resolution, refresh range, and field-of-view figures describe the listed hardware, not what every wearer will see in every application. In particular, “up to” 110 degrees is a maximum, and Valve’s stated eyeglass-width and IPD ranges are fit targets rather than a substitute for trying the headset.
Tracking, passthrough, and controllers
Headset tracking and cameras
Valve lists inside-out camera tracking, with four outward-facing monochrome cameras for headset and controller tracking and two interior eye-tracking cameras. It also lists monochrome passthrough and IR illuminators for low-light tracking and passthrough. The base headset should not be described as offering color passthrough: Valve identifies the separate Arcturus Vision camera accessory for color passthrough and spatial video.

- 2+ HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — Charge less, play longer and stay in the action with an improved battery that keeps up. *Based on the graphic performance of the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 platform vs the Meta Quest 2 platform.
Controllers
The split-layout controllers have full-size magnetic TMR thumbsticks, analog triggers, bumpers, Steam/menu/view buttons, dual-stage grip buttons, haptics, and capacitive finger tracking. They connect to the headset over a dedicated 2.4GHz link and each uses one replaceable AA battery. Valve lists 40 hours of controller battery life; that is a manufacturer figure, not independently tested endurance.
SteamVR and OpenXR compatibility
Valve’s Steamworks documentation identifies SteamVR and OpenXR compatibility, covering streamed PC VR content and applications running on the headset. This tells developers which software interfaces the device supports; it does not by itself establish compatibility or performance for every title. Check Valve’s Steam Frame Verified criteria and the label for the specific game rather than inferring support from the platform name alone.

These are optional paths; Valve does not say they are required to use the headset.

What these early specifications do—and do not—tell us
The clearest early takeaway is the product’s dual role: Valve is positioning Steam Frame first as a way to stream PC games, while also supporting standalone VR and non-VR experiences. Its listed processor, memory, storage options, display, tracking hardware, and accessories give a useful outline of the design.
Those details cannot settle questions about comfort, image quality, real-world streaming latency, headset battery endurance, or how demanding games run. Valve’s published figures are specifications and stated design goals, not hands-on findings. Current regional price and availability, particular microSD card compatibility, and current retailer listings are also not established by the cited product information.
