For a more comfortable, smoother Steam Frame experience, get the fit right first, then tune each game’s refresh rate, per-eye resolution, throttling and motion smoothing in small steps. Aim for a frame rate the game and your setup can sustain consistently—not the highest available setting. The right balance depends on whether you are playing standalone or streaming PCVR, and on the game.
Start with fit before changing performance settings
A clear image and a headset that rests comfortably are the first checks. Valve lists an IPD target range of 60–70 mm and a maximum glasses width of 140 mm on the Steam Frame product page. These figures can help you check whether the headset and your glasses are within the published fit specifications; they cannot predict individual comfort or replace careful adjustment.

Valve says the core module can be separated from the headstrap for use with other headstrap solutions. That is a hardware option, not a guarantee that any particular alternative will fit or feel better.
Know which play mode you are tuning
Valve describes Steam Frame as “a standalone virtual reality headset designed primarily for low-latency streaming of player’s Steam Library from a PC, while also supporting standalone experiences for both VR and Non-VR.” That description appears in Valve’s Steamworks documentation. The distinction matters: standalone play runs on the headset, while streamed PCVR depends on the game and PC as well as the headset and streaming connection. A setting that feels smooth in one mode or title may not behave the same in another.

Where to find per-game video controls
Use SteamVR’s per-application video settings to tune a specific title rather than assuming one global profile will suit every game. Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes controls for per-eye resolution, frame limit or refresh override, throttling behavior and motion smoothing. Menu labels can change as Steam Frame and SteamOS are updated, so look for the application-specific video controls in SteamVR.
The same documentation describes defaults of 1728×1728 per eye and 72 Hz when corresponding app preferences are unspecified. These are documented defaults in Steam’s application-preference system—not a consumer preset or a promise that every game uses those exact values.

Change settings in small steps
- Choose one game and establish a baseline. Play it in the mode you actually use—standalone or PCVR streaming—and note whether motion is consistently smooth and the image is clear enough for you.
- Set a sustainable refresh target or frame limit. Valve lists a 72–144 Hz range and marks 144 Hz as experimental on the Steam Frame product page. Start at a rate the game and, for streamed play, the full streaming setup can hold consistently. Try a higher target only if performance remains stable.
- Adjust per-eye resolution if needed. If performance is unstable, try reducing the per-eye resolution before pursuing a higher refresh target. Increase resolution only while the game remains smooth. Valve documents the control, but does not publish a universal resolution-versus-performance result for consumer use.
- Test throttling and motion smoothing for that title. SteamVR documents half-framerate throttling and motion-smoothing choices. Change one option at a time and judge the result in the game itself; these features do not improve comfort for everyone or in every title.
- Keep the changes that work, then reassess other games separately. Different games and play modes can have different performance limits, so a setting that works well in one is not automatically the right choice for another.
Balance refresh rate, resolution and smoothness
Steam Frame’s listed display resolution is 2160×2160 LCD per eye, and its listed refresh range is 72–144 Hz, with 144 Hz identified as experimental by Valve. Those are device specifications, not a guarantee that a particular game renders at the display’s full resolution or sustains every refresh target. A higher target is useful only if the game and system can keep pace; when they cannot, a lower, consistent target may provide a steadier experience than chasing maximum detail and refresh together.
There is no single best profile in the available official documentation. Treat refresh target, per-eye resolution, throttling and smoothing as controls to evaluate in the specific game, rather than assuming that maximum values will produce the best result.

Use software updates carefully, especially beta options
Steam Frame is an actively updated platform, so check release notes when a control or connection behaves unexpectedly. Valve’s September 17, 2026 SteamOS 0.3.0 release notes record a fix for per-app “Force Always-On” motion smoothing, improved motion smoothing in Alyx, a setting to dim a game while the dashboard is visible, and a change to play-area bounds behavior. These are change-log details, not settings that every owner should enable.
Valve’s October 1, 2026 SteamOS 0.4.3 beta notes report power-efficiency and battery-lifetime gains of up to 12% during streaming and local gameplay, with results varying by frame rate and content. Because this is a beta result, it is not a guaranteed gain for every user or workload.

If PC streaming fails with Error 17, check both the headset’s software channel and the PC’s SteamVR version against current Valve release notes. In the October 1, 2026 SteamOS 0.4.3 beta notes, Valve says the PC also needs SteamVR 2.18.2 or later to reduce Error 17 issues. That version guidance is specific to the cited beta notes and may be superseded by later updates.
