That is a real reviewer’s experience, not a settled verdict on how the headset fits everyone: PC Gamer and Tom’s Hardware describe comfortable use. The practical question is whether its fit, intended use, and price make sense for you.
What the negative review says
Harvey’s PSX Extreme review evaluates the 1TB Steam Frame. He writes that the headset “physically punished me for wearing it” and criticizes its fit, materials, and passthrough. He also says software improvements after launch could change his view. Those statements describe his assessment of his review unit; they do not establish that the headset is uncomfortable for every wearer.

Harvey lists the 1TB configuration at $1,299 USD and the 256GB configuration at $1,059 USD. These are the prices printed in that review, not a guarantee of current price, availability, or local checkout cost. Confirm the live listing and your regional price before making a decision.

Why comfort reviews disagree
Other reviewers report a substantially different fit experience. PC Gamer describes the headset as light, balanced, and comfortable even after hours of play, and notes an included glasses spacer. Tom’s Hardware also reports comfortable fit and pressure relief.

Ars Technica reports a total headset weight of 440 g and says the rear battery arrangement helps balance the unit. That helps explain the design, but weight and balance do not determine how pressure lands on a particular face. The reviews do not provide a controlled, representative comparison of comfort across users. Head shape, adjustment, facial interface, session length, and personal tolerance may all affect an individual result.
Valve developer Jeff Leinbaugh described the design goal as making a “lighter, more comfortable, easier to get into and out of VR headset” in a Tom’s Hardware interview. That is the manufacturer’s stated aim, not evidence that every wearer will find the result comfortable.

What you are paying for
The target review lists these specifications for the 1TB model: Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 (ARM64), 16 GB unified LPDDR5X memory, 1TB storage with a microSD slot, a 21.6 Wh battery, LCD resolution of 2160 × 2160 per eye, and a 72–144 Hz refresh range, with 144 Hz described as experimental. It also lists Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, and SteamOS 3. These are specifications as presented by PSX Extreme; they should not be read as a promise of a particular experience in every game or network setup.

For wireless PC VR streaming, reviews describe the Steam Frame as a useful option. Ars Technica observed five to ten milliseconds of ping on its SteamOS display in its own setup; that is a reviewer observation, not a guaranteed latency figure. Tom’s Hardware reports excellent streaming performance in its test setup. The experience will depend on the streaming setup and conditions, so those reports are not universal benchmarks.

Standalone use is a different value proposition. Tom’s Hardware describes standalone gaming as weaker in its testing because of emulation. If you mainly want wireless access to a PC VR library, streaming may be the feature that matters most; if you expect a broad, strong standalone game experience, weigh that reported trade-off carefully.
How to decide whether it is worth it for you
- Compare the configuration you would actually buy. The PSX Extreme review’s $1,059 USD figure is for 256GB; its $1,299 USD figure is for 1TB. Do not treat the 1TB review as a test of the lower-storage model, and check current local prices and availability.
- Make fit a personal check, not a verdict by proxy. Positive comfort reports do not disprove Harvey’s experience, and his experience does not predict yours. Where possible, try the headset with your glasses or usual facial setup and the adjustments you would use at home.
- Match the headset to your use. Consider whether PC VR streaming or standalone play is your priority. Reviews report strong streaming experiences in their setups but identify standalone gaming as a weaker area.
- Factor accessories into fit, without assuming a cure. PC Gamer and Tom’s Hardware discuss Valve’s separately sold Ergonomic Accessories Kit, including a top strap and extended light blocker; PC Gamer also mentions controller straps. An accessory may change fit for some users, but the reviews do not establish that it resolves an individual comfort problem. Check current kit contents, compatibility, and price.
- Account for the price hurdle. PC Gamer calls price a major obstacle, particularly for first-time VR buyers and Quest 3 owners considering an upgrade. Valve software developer Jeremy Selan told PC Gamer, “Price. I wish we could have shipped it at the price that we were at last year.”
Verdict
“Uncomfortable” is fair as a description of Harvey’s experience, but not as a universal conclusion: other reviewers found the Steam Frame comfortable and balanced. The price criticism is easier to understand in context: the reported configurations cost four figures, while the value depends heavily on whether you prioritize PC VR streaming, can accept the reported standalone trade-off, and find the fit comfortable yourself. Treat the listed prices as review-time figures and verify today’s offer before buying.
