Steam Frame Controllers vs. Steam Deck Controls for PC Gaming

Steam Deck puts trackpads and assignable rear buttons on a handheld PC; Steam Frame Controllers are a split pair for tracked VR and non-VR Steam play.

Choose Steam Deck controls if you want a handheld PC with its controls built in, including two trackpads and four assignable rear buttons. Choose Steam Frame Controllers if you want a split pair for tracked VR play that can also handle non-VR Steam games with familiar gamepad inputs. They serve different play contexts; Valve’s published specifications do not establish that either is more comfortable or performs better in PC games.

How the two control setups differ

Feature Steam Frame Controllers Steam Deck controls
Physical arrangement A split pair of controllers used with the Steam Frame headset. Valve’s Steam Frame page describes the layout. Controls integrated into a handheld PC. See Valve’s Steam Deck hardware page.
Conventional gamepad inputs For non-VR play, Valve lists a D-pad, ABXY buttons, thumbsticks, triggers, and bumpers. Valve lists a D-pad, ABXY buttons, analog triggers, thumbsticks, and additional controls in its Steam Deck technical specifications.
Trackpads The cited Frame controller feature description does not list trackpads; that alone does not establish whether the complete specification includes them. Two square haptic trackpads are listed in the technical specifications.
Other documented inputs Capacitive finger tracking and spatial controller tracking for VR. Four rear buttons, labeled L4, L5, R4, and R5, are user-assignable, alongside the trackpads.
Device context Designed for VR and non-VR Steam play in the Steam Frame setup. A handheld computer with an integrated screen and rechargeable battery; battery life varies with use.
Battery figure Valve estimates approximately 40 hours per controller from one AA battery. This is a manufacturer estimate, not an independent test. No directly comparable controller-only figure: the Deck’s integrated battery powers the handheld, and its runtime varies by use.

Which layout fits your PC gaming?

Choose Steam Deck controls for a handheld-first setup

The Deck keeps the screen and controls together, so it is the more direct fit when you want a self-contained handheld PC. Its thumbsticks and standard gamepad buttons cover familiar controller input. The two trackpads add another input option for games or interfaces where a trackpad is useful, while the four rear buttons can be assigned to other inputs.

Choose Steam Frame Controllers for VR and split-controller play

Valve describes the Frame controllers as a split gamepad layout designed to work with the Steam library. Their distinguishing documented feature is that they support tracked VR interaction, including capacitive finger tracking, while also providing familiar inputs for non-VR games. Valve also describes streaming to Steam Frame from a PC, laptop, or Steam Deck. That makes the controllers part of a headset-centered setup rather than controls integrated into a handheld.

Can Steam Frame Controllers play non-VR games?

Yes. Valve lists a D-pad, ABXY buttons, thumbsticks, triggers, and bumpers for non-VR play, and says the controllers are designed for the Steam library. That establishes intended use, not compatibility or performance in every individual game. Valve’s description also does not provide comparative latency measurements for PC-game play.

Are Steam Frame Controllers the same as Steam Deck controls?

No. Frame controllers are a split pair intended for tracked VR use as well as non-VR play; Steam Deck controls are built into a handheld computer. Valve explicitly documents two trackpads and four assignable rear buttons on the Deck. The Frame feature summary cited here does not list trackpads, so it is not enough to make an absolute claim that the controllers lack them.

What compatibility claims can you rely on?

Valve describes the Frame controllers as designed for the Steam library and says they support the full SteamVR catalog. Actual behavior still depends on the game and device. Valve’s Steam Controller page discusses Steam Input configuration and input parity with Steam Deck, but that parity statement is about the Steam Controller; it should not be treated as proof that Steam Frame Controllers have identical mappings or compatibility. Valve’s Steam hardware page provides wider ecosystem context by identifying Steam Deck and Steam Frame as SteamOS devices.

What Valve’s published information does not settle

  • Which setup feels more comfortable over a long session. Valve describes the Deck as built for extended play, but that is not an independent head-to-head comfort test.
  • Which setup produces better performance or lower input latency in PC games.
  • Whether every Steam game works identically with both control setups.
  • Whether the Frame controllers include trackpads; the cited feature summary does not establish their presence or absence.
