Steam Frame is a wireless VR headset that can run supported games locally or stream your Steam library from another device. Before ordering, decide which mode you will use, check whether your must-play titles have Steam Frame Standalone Verified status, choose 256GB or 1TB storage, confirm fit and prescription needs, and verify the live reservation and regional shipping rules. Valve has announced specifications, but final prices, delivery, returns and independent performance results still need to be checked on the current official product page.
This guide separates confirmed product information from decisions that depend on your library, network, face shape and location.

What Steam Frame is—and what it is not
Valve describes Steam Frame as a wireless headset with motion controllers for two different experiences: standalone play and streaming. In standalone mode, software runs on the headset itself, but only a growing subset of VR and non-VR games is supported. In streaming mode, Steam Frame displays games running in your Steam library on a compatible source such as a desktop PC, laptop or Steam Deck. Valve also mentions support for streaming from the forthcoming Steam Machine.
Recommended Free Tools
That distinction determines whether you need another computer. You do not need a PC for a title that is supported locally, but you do need a suitable source device and a reliable connection for streamed games. Valve says the whole Steam library can be streamed, while standalone support is identified through its Steam Frame Standalone Verified program. The program is therefore the first place to check a particular game; do not assume that a title that streams well will also install and run locally.

Start with your game list
Separate local games from streamed games
- Write down the VR and non-VR games you actually expect to play, rather than judging from the size of your library.
- For each essential title, check Valve’s current Steam Frame Standalone Verified information. The program is intended to show which games run on the headset without a separate streaming device.
- Mark every remaining title as a streaming candidate and identify the PC, laptop or Steam Deck that will provide the game.
- Decide whether losing access to a particular title when that source device is unavailable would be a deal-breaker.
Valve has not published a fixed game-by-game list in the product material available here, and verification can change. Check the live status for your own titles immediately before ordering rather than relying on a forum post or an old video.
What “standalone” does not promise
Standalone capability is not a guarantee that every game in a franchise, every graphics setting or every peripheral feature will be available locally. Treat the Verified label as the relevant compatibility signal for the exact game. If most of your play will be streamed, storage capacity and local processor limits matter less than the quality of your source device and wireless path.
Choose 256GB or 1TB storage
Valve lists two configurations, both using UFS internal storage and both offering a microSD card slot. No comparative price was established, so use the current checkout figures rather than an old launch estimate.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Configuration | Included internal storage | Best fit | Expansion | Decision check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 256GB | 256GB UFS | Owners who expect to stream most games and install a limited set of local titles | microSD slot | Confirm that your planned standalone library, updates and other files fit without constant uninstalling |
| 1TB | 1TB UFS | Buyers who want a larger local library or less storage management | microSD slot | Compare the live price difference with the cost and convenience of your own expansion strategy |
The microSD slot gives you another capacity option, but it does not make the two models identical. Internal storage remains the simpler place for frequently used local software, and the product page does not establish performance figures for any particular card. If you are buying primarily as a portable standalone system, the 1TB model gives you more headroom before you have to manage installs. If your normal pattern is streaming from a PC, 256GB may be sufficient, provided you are comfortable keeping only a small local selection.

Understand the announced hardware
The following figures are Valve’s announced specifications, not independent measurements. Valve also warns that some specifications may change before availability.
| Area | Valve-announced specification | What to verify before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | 4nm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3; ARM64 architecture | Whether your target standalone games are verified; no independent performance result is supplied |
| Memory | 16GB unified LPDDR5X RAM | Do not infer a desktop-PC performance level from the memory number alone |
| Storage | 256GB or 1TB UFS, plus microSD slot | Choose for your local-game plans and current checkout price |
| Headset battery | 21.6Wh rechargeable lithium-ion battery, plus a rear integrated headstrap battery | Valve’s captured specifications do not state headset runtime |
| Charging and data | USB-C 2.0 port; maximum 45W charging input | Check what is included in the box and your preferred charging setup |
| Display | 2160 × 2160 LCD per eye | Resolution is announced, not an independently measured clarity result |
| Refresh rate | 72–144Hz; 144Hz is identified as experimental | Do not assume every game or mode will use 144Hz |
| Optics | Custom pancake lenses; field of view up to 110 degrees | Fit and perceived edge clarity vary by user |
| IPD and glasses | Stated IPD target range 60–70mm; maximum glasses width 140mm | Measure your interpupillary distance and frame width |
| Tracking | Inside-out camera tracking; four outward monochrome cameras; two interior eye-tracking cameras; monochrome passthrough; IR illuminators | No independent tracking, passthrough or low-light test is established |
| Wireless | Wi-Fi 7 with dual radios; included Wi-Fi 6E 6GHz adapter for a direct low-latency PC link | Confirm your intended router, room and PC arrangement; specifications do not guarantee real-world latency |
| Bluetooth | Bluetooth 5.4 | Check the accessories you intend to pair |
| Weight | 440g for core module plus headstrap; 185g for core module | These figures do not predict comfort for every face or session length |
Plan the wireless connection before ordering
For PC or Steam Deck streaming
Streaming puts the source device and network at the center of the experience. Identify where the source computer will sit, how it connects to your network and whether the headset will use your existing wireless network or the included Wi-Fi 6E 6GHz adapter for a direct PC link. The adapter is designed for a low-latency connection, but Valve’s specification is not a measured guarantee. Your room layout, wireless congestion, operating-system setup and source-device load can all affect results.
- Confirm that the computer or Steam Deck you intend to use is available whenever you want to play streamed titles.
- Check that your network hardware can provide the band and standard you plan to use; Wi-Fi 7 on the headset does not upgrade an older router.
- Decide whether a direct link is practical in your room and whether the source computer can remain positioned for it.
- Keep a local, verified game available as a fallback if your network or source device is offline.
For standalone play
Standalone play removes the streaming path, but it does not remove compatibility checks. Use the Standalone Verified information for each essential title, leave space for operating-system and game updates, and select storage accordingly. The headset’s announced processor, RAM and battery figures do not establish how long a particular game will run or what settings it will use.
Check fit, vision and comfort constraints
Interpupillary distance and glasses
Valve states a target IPD range of 60–70mm and a maximum glasses width of 140mm. Measure your IPD using a method you trust and measure the total width of the glasses frame you would wear inside the headset. If either measurement falls outside those stated limits, treat that as a fit risk rather than assuming the lenses will align comfortably.

Prescription inserts
Valve names Zenni prescription inserts as a compatible accessory. They are an option for people who prefer not to wear glasses inside the headset, not a requirement for operation. Confirm the current insert ordering process, prescription range, lead time and return policy before adding them to your budget; those details are not established in the captured product information.
Weight and balance
The product page describes Steam Frame as lightweight and balanced and lists 440g for the core module plus headstrap, with the core module alone at 185g. Those are manufacturer descriptions and weights, not a comfort test. Face shape, hair, strap adjustment, prescription lenses and session length can change the experience. If comfort is your deciding factor, look for current hands-on evidence after the hardware is available and make sure the seller’s return terms cover a poor fit.
Decide whether the controllers meet your needs
Valve lists six-degree-of-freedom controller tracking, motion controls, magnetic TMR thumbsticks with capacitive touch, standard gamepad controls and one replaceable AA battery per controller. The stated controller battery life is approximately 40 hours. That figure is Valve’s estimate, not an independently tested result, and it is separate from the headset’s unspecified runtime.

Know what comes with the base purchase
Valve’s product description covers the headset and controllers, while its FAQ separately names accessories. Confirm the exact contents of the current order page, because the captured information does not provide a complete region-specific box inventory.
Named accessories
- Zenni prescription inserts: custom lenses for buyers who need vision correction without wearing glasses inside the headset.
- Arcturus Vision camera: an optional camera described as supporting 5K HDR color passthrough and spatial video capture.
- First-party PSU: a replacement or additional power-supply option named in the FAQ.
- Accessories Replacement Kit: a first-party replacement set named in the FAQ.
- Ergonomic Accessories Kit: a first-party fit-oriented option named in the FAQ.
Valve says the first-party PSU, replacement kit and ergonomic kit are available only to customers purchasing Steam Frame through the add-to-cart process. Availability, pricing and regional eligibility can change. None of these accessories is presented as required for the headset to function.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand the reservation and purchase process
Valve’s FAQ describes a randomized reservation queue rather than immediate universal checkout. Separate queues are maintained by shipping region and by the selected 256GB or 1TB model. Valve says the design was intended to be “less frustrating and more fair for everyone,” which is Valve’s explanation of its system, not an independent finding about fairness.

The FAQ stated that eligible customers needed a Steam account in good standing and a Steam purchase made before April 27, 2026. It gave September 17, 2026 as the randomization and sign-up cutoff, with purchase emails beginning September 18, and said a reservation holder had 72 hours after receiving the email to complete the purchase.

Those dates are historical and may have passed or changed. On October 16, 2026, do not treat them as an open sign-up schedule. Check the live official Steam Frame page for the current reservation state, eligibility rules, queue status, model selection and purchase deadline. If you receive an email, verify the deadline shown in that message and complete checkout within the stated window; losing the window may affect your place in the queue.
Regional routing
The FAQ directs customers in Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong to Komodo, described by Valve as its official distributor in those markets. It says South Korea shipping will occur later. Regional availability and the responsible seller can change, so confirm the current route, currency, taxes, shipping charges and consumer protections for your location before paying.
Verify the costs the product page does not establish
No reliable regional checkout total is established here. Before ordering, record the live figures for the selected storage model and any optional accessory, then add taxes, shipping and any import or payment fees shown for your address. Also read the current delivery estimate and return terms. A reservation notice is not the same thing as a final price or a guaranteed delivery date.
- Price for 256GB and 1TB in your region
- Tax, shipping and possible import charges
- Whether accessories are sold in the same transaction
- Estimated dispatch and delivery dates
- Return, refund and warranty procedure

Use this pre-order checklist
- Library: list your must-play VR and non-VR games.
- Compatibility: check each title’s current Standalone Verified status and label the rest as streaming games.
- Source device: identify the PC, laptop, Steam Deck or other supported source you will use for streaming.
- Network: choose between your wireless network and the included Wi-Fi 6E direct PC-link adapter, then confirm the physical layout works.
- Storage: compare your local install plan with 256GB and 1TB; account for updates and keep the microSD slot as expansion, not an assumed performance guarantee.
- Fit: measure IPD, glasses width and any prescription requirement against Valve’s stated limits.
- Controllers: decide whether motion, capacitive touch, TMR sticks and replaceable AA cells suit your games.
- Accessories: add prescription inserts or the camera only if your use case needs them, and verify current compatibility and price.
- Queue: check the live reservation rules, region, model queue and purchase deadline.
- Checkout: confirm the final total, delivery estimate, return terms and warranty before submitting payment.
Who should choose each setup?
Choose 256GB when
- Your priority is streaming most of the time.
- You need only a small group of verified standalone games installed at once.
- You are comfortable using a microSD card or managing installs.
- The live price difference makes the smaller model the better value for your actual usage.
Choose 1TB when
- You want a substantial local library without frequent uninstalling.
- You expect to use Steam Frame away from your main streaming computer.
- You prefer internal capacity and fewer storage-management decisions.
- The regional price premium fits your budget after taxes and shipping.
Wait or reconsider when
- Your essential games are not currently identified as standalone-compatible and you cannot rely on streaming.
- You have no suitable source device or a network arrangement that cannot support the intended streaming mode.
- Your IPD or glasses exceed Valve’s stated fit range.
- You need confirmed battery runtime, latency, comfort or return terms before committing; those answers require current hands-on evidence or live seller policies.
What is still unverified
The announced specifications do not answer several practical buying questions. Current regional prices, taxes, shipping charges, delivery estimates and return terms must be checked at checkout. No independent results establish latency, visual quality, tracking accuracy, passthrough quality, comfort, headset runtime or real-world wireless reliability. The current game-by-game Standalone Verified catalog can change, and availability of the headset or accessories through any third-party marketplace is not established. Treat these as open checks rather than filling the gaps with assumptions.
