The first is for sharing a library; the second is for playing a host-run game together online.
How Steam Family Sharing works now
Steam Family Sharing is now managed through Steam Families. Introduced in March 2024, Steam Families replaced the separate Family Sharing and Family View systems, bringing family access and related controls together.

A Steam Family can have up to six members and is intended for close family members in a household. Eligible games appear in a shared family library, but each purchase stays in the collection of the person who bought it. Members launch shared games using their own Steam accounts, so achievements belong to the account playing. Save handling varies by game.

Playing games and sharing DLC
Family members can play different games from the shared library at the same time. To play the same title simultaneously, the family needs enough copies: each player using that game at once needs an available copy. Steam’s support examples distinguish playing different titles, such as Portal 2 and Half-Life, from launching the same game concurrently.

Shareable DLC may be accessible when a family member owns it. Compatibility can depend on publisher settings and whether members have different sets of DLC.
Which games qualify?
Not every game can be shared. Steam lists exclusions that include games requiring an additional third-party key, account or subscription; free-to-play games and their purchased DLC; games restricted by region or operating system; titles whose publishers opt out; and games an owner marks private. Offline play is possible only when the particular game supports Family Sharing.

How Remote Play Together works
Remote Play Together is for supported local multiplayer games. One player launches and runs the game on their computer, then invites Steam friends to join the session remotely. Invited players do not need to own or launch the game.
Steam streams the game’s video and audio and voice between participants. Steam says a session can include up to four additional players, with more possible on fast connections; it does not specify a universal connection-speed threshold. Each participant can use their own controller. The host can control whether guests are allowed to share keyboard and mouse input.

The feature depends on the game supporting Remote Play Together and on the host being ready to run it. Connection quality affects the streaming experience, so Steam recommends a fast internet connection for low-latency play. Unlike Steam Families, this does not grant guests access to a library copy or transfer game ownership: it shares a live multiplayer session.

Choose Steam Families for ongoing access to eligible games within a family group; choose Remote Play Together for a shared, host-run multiplayer session with friends. They solve different problems and are not interchangeable.
