A Steam Demo is a free sample for prospective players; a Steam Playtest is a free, developer-managed way to gather feedback; and “Prologue” is a label, not a documented Steam feature with a standard set of rules. To understand what you can play, how you get access, and whether it might end, check the individual game’s listing and compare it with Steam’s documented features.
Steam Demo, Playtest, and “Prologue” compared

Steam explains the setup and general purposes of Demos and Playtests in its Demos documentation and Steam Playtest documentation. These labels do not tell you exactly what content a specific game includes.

What a Steam Demo offers
Steam describes a Demo as a way for customers to try a game before purchasing. Demos are free and are usually a smaller playable portion that demonstrates core mechanics. The developer decides what portion to include, so “Demo” does not promise a particular number of levels, hours, or features.
A Demo has its own App ID linked to the full game. It can be offered through the full game’s store page, and developers may create a separate Demo page if they choose. A separate page is optional, not a requirement.

One practical limitation: Steam’s documentation says multiplayer matchmaking between a full game and its Demo is not currently supported. If you want to play with someone who owns the full version, check the game’s listing or developer guidance rather than assuming the Demo can join their sessions.
What a Steam Playtest means
A Playtest is intended to help a developer collect feedback, rather than serve primarily as a polished preview for customers. Steam presents the signup on the main game’s store page, and the Playtest itself does not have a unique store page. Developers can control how many players get access and can deactivate the Playtest when they choose.

Steam keeps Playtest participation separate from several parts of the full game’s record: Playtest participants cannot review the actual game, and Playtest activity does not affect the game’s wishlist, refund policy, trading cards, or achievements. Steam describes Playtests as free; charging for access or using in-game transactions to monetize one is not allowed. Its stated alternative for developers ready to charge for a work-in-progress game is Early Access.
A Playtest is not confidential by default. Steam says players are not under NDAs merely because they participate, so do not assume you are prohibited from discussing what you see unless the developer separately sets terms.

Is a Steam “Prologue” the same as a Demo?
Not necessarily. Steam’s documentation mentions developers shipping free games labeled “Prologue,” but it does not define a Prologue application type or prescribe what one must contain. The title could describe a separate free experience, but the word alone does not establish its relationship to the full game or whether it functions as a preview.
To assess one, look at the game’s own store description for what is playable, whether it is a standalone release or an excerpt, and how it relates to the full game. Treat the specific listing as the source of those details rather than assuming “Prologue” has a consistent Steam-wide meaning.

How to choose what to install
Use the store listing and the developer’s description to check the things that matter to you:
Recommended Free Tools
- Purpose: Is it presented as a sample to help you decide about a purchase, or as a test where the developer wants feedback?
- Playable content: What levels, modes, features, or portion of the game are actually included?
- Access: Can anyone install it, or must you request access to a Playtest that the developer controls?
- Availability: Could the Playtest be deactivated, ending access?
- Store page: Is there a separate Demo page, or is the relevant information on the main game page? Playtests use the main game’s page for signup.
- Multiplayer: If you need to play with owners of the full game, verify compatibility; Steam does not currently support matchmaking between a Demo and its full game.

What Steam recommends developers consider
Steam says players generally use a Demo to help decide whether to buy the game. Its guidance recommends making a Demo representative of the game’s quality and choosing a length that gives players enough to become interested without making them feel they have already experienced everything. Steam generally recommends releasing a Demo at launch, while noting that an earlier Demo can be useful when players need to try the game to understand it. These are recommendations, not guarantees of sales or player response.
For Playtests, Steam presents the feature as a way to collect feedback without managing email lists or Steam keys, and without putting the main game’s reviews and wishlists at risk. Developers can adjust access and turn the Playtest off. Those controls are why a Playtest is not the same as a permanent free edition.
