Bring a Steam Deck if your priority is playing PC games with built-in controls; choose a tablet if you want a more versatile screen for browsing, reading, video, and touch-first apps. Neither is universally better for travel: compare the exact devices, planned games and apps, trip length, and packed weight before deciding.
What each device does best on a trip
Steam Deck: gaming with built-in controls
Valve describes SteamOS as optimized for gaming and the Steam Deck interface as controller-oriented. That makes the Deck the more purpose-built option for playing compatible PC games without packing a separate controller. Valve’s compatibility indicators can help you check how individual games work, but they do not mean every title in the Steam catalog works equally well.

Tablet: a more general-purpose travel screen
“Tablet” covers a wide range of devices. A tablet may be a better fit for touch-first apps, web browsing, reading, and video, but its screen, weight, battery life, controls, and offline features depend on the specific model and apps. A tablet can also play games, though controls and performance depend on that device and the game; compare your intended setup rather than assuming every tablet offers the same experience.
Compare the exact devices you would pack
| Travel factor | Steam Deck | Tablet |
|---|---|---|
| Controls | Built-in physical gaming controls suit controller-oriented games. | Usually touch-first; check whether your games need a separate controller. |
| General-purpose use | Gaming is the central use case; check the specific device and apps for other needs. | Often a natural fit for browsing, reading, video, and touch-first apps; capabilities vary by model. |
| Packed size and weight | Compare the exact model and any case or accessories you plan to carry. | Compare the exact tablet and accessories; the category alone does not establish a weight advantage. |
| Battery for your workload | Depends on the game and settings; Valve’s dated estimate is not a guarantee for an individual title. | Depends on the tablet, app, and task; a web or video estimate is not a gaming estimate. |
| Offline use | Verify offline access separately for each intended game. | Verify downloads and offline behavior separately for each intended app or media service. |
| Charging and backup power | Check the device’s charging needs and any power bank against airline rules. | Check the specific tablet’s charging needs and any power bank against airline rules. |
Battery life: compare like with like
There is no same-method performance comparison here that establishes a universal battery-life winner. Valve said in an April 7, 2022 post that, “depending on what you’re doing, you can expect between 2 and 8 hours of gameplay,” referring to the then-current Steam Deck. That is a dated manufacturer estimate, not a promise for every game or later model (Valve’s 2022 statement).
#1 Best Overall
- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
Apple lists a 19.1 Wh battery and “Up to 10 hours” of Wi-Fi web browsing, video, or music for the iPad mini 4. Those are Apple’s model-specific specifications for an older tablet, not an estimate for current tablets or gaming workloads (Apple iPad mini 4 technical specifications). Use the manufacturer’s estimate for the exact model and task you expect to use, and allow for your own screen, settings, and usage rather than treating either figure as a travel guarantee.
Check games and apps before going offline
A game’s compatibility status does not by itself establish that it will work without a connection. Before leaving, install each intended game, update it, launch it, and check its offline requirements. Do the equivalent for tablet apps and downloaded media: confirm that the content is saved locally and that the app permits offline access.

What to know about batteries on U.S. flights
For U.S. passenger-aircraft travel, the FAA’s guidance, updated August 10, 2026, allows rechargeable batteries from 0–100 Wh; batteries from 101–160 Wh require carrier approval; and batteries over 160 Wh are prohibited. Power banks count as spare lithium batteries and must be carried in cabin baggage. The FAA also says TSA, individual airlines, and international rules may be more restrictive, so check the rules that apply to your itinerary (FAA lithium-battery guidance).
Carry devices with lithium batteries, including tablets and gaming systems, in the cabin. If a device is placed in checked baggage, FAA guidance says it must be switched off and protected against accidental activation or damage (FAA guidance on portable electronic devices). For a power bank, confirm its labeled Wh rating, that its output suits the device you plan to charge, and that your airline permits it.

Choose based on the trip you are actually taking
Choose a Steam Deck when
- Playing PC games is the main reason you want a device for downtime.
- Your planned games suit built-in physical controls and you have checked their compatibility and offline requirements.
- You are willing to carry a gaming-focused device rather than relying on one screen for every travel task.
Choose a tablet when
- You want one device primarily for browsing, reading, video, or touch-first apps.
- The exact tablet’s size, weight, battery behavior, and offline features suit your plans.
- You prefer its general-purpose apps to built-in gaming controls.
When either could work
If gaming and general-purpose use matter about equally, compare the precise models and accessories together: packed weight and dimensions, screen comfort, games and apps, offline access, real-world charging needs for your planned use, and whether you would need a separate controller. Valve’s Steam Deck OLED product page identifies that model and describes it as offering better battery life; treat that as Valve’s product claim, not a same-method comparison with a tablet.
