There is no universal winner. Choose a Steam Deck when most of your library is on Steam and you want a controller-first SteamOS experience. Choose the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X (model RC73XA) or MSI Claw 8 AI+ A2VM when Windows 11, a familiar desktop, and broader launcher flexibility matter more. If Intel hardware is the specific requirement, the Claw 8 AI+ is the documented comparison point. Your final choice should be based on the exact games you play, the model and configuration you can buy, measured battery tests, and how the device feels in your hands—not on a processor name alone.
The short answer: start with software, not silicon
These handhelds are small Windows PCs or SteamOS PCs with integrated graphics, built-in controls, a display, and a battery. They can run demanding games, but every game remains a separate compatibility and performance case. Anti-cheat, launchers, controller support, shader compilation, graphics settings, and suspend behavior can matter as much as the nominal CPU or GPU.

For a Steam-heavy library, a Steam Deck OLED or LCD variant is the logical first shortlist. SteamOS is designed around a controller-friendly interface and a console-like library workflow. That does not mean every Steam game is equally convenient: check the title’s compatibility, launcher requirements, anti-cheat behavior, and any community fixes before buying.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWindows handhelds trade some of that appliance-like simplicity for a conventional PC environment. The ROG Xbox Ally X (2025) and MSI Claw 8 AI+ A2VM both specify Windows 11 Home. Windows can make non-Steam launchers and desktop applications familiar, but you must also deal with Windows updates, desktop scaling, launchers, drivers, and an on-screen keyboard or attached keyboard when needed.

The Intel choice is not an abstract category. The MSI Claw 8 AI+ A2VM is a specific product with an Intel Core Ultra 7 258V processor, an 8-inch 120 Hz touchscreen with variable refresh rate (VRR), an 80 Wh battery, and two Thunderbolt 4 ports. Do not transfer those details to older Claw models or to every future Intel handheld.
Which exact products are being compared?
| Family or model | Operating system | Documented hardware facts | What is not established here |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Deck (OLED or LCD variant) | SteamOS | Valve publishes the controlling specifications; display, battery, storage, and availability differ by variant. | A single set of specifications, price, battery runtime, or performance for every Deck variant. |
| ROG Xbox Ally X (2025), RC73XA | Windows 11 Home | AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme; 8 cores and 16 threads; up to 5.0 GHz; 80 Wh battery; UK specification page lists 715 g. | Whether another regional configuration has identical weight, charger, storage, or pricing. |
| MSI Claw 8 AI+ A2VM | Windows 11 Home | Intel Core Ultra 7 258V; 8-inch 120 Hz VRR touchscreen; 80 Wh battery; two Thunderbolt 4 ports. | Performance of every Claw configuration, older generations, or games not covered by a matched test. |
The model suffix matters. “ROG Ally” can refer to more than one generation and configuration, while “MSI Claw” covers several products. Confirm the full model number, memory, storage, display, operating system, included charger, and regional warranty on the listing you are considering.
SteamOS versus Windows 11
SteamOS: a focused console-style workflow
SteamOS puts the Steam library and controller navigation first. A typical session is close to a console routine: wake the device, choose a game, and return to the library. The advantage is reduced friction for someone who buys and plays mainly through Steam. It is also easier to keep the desktop out of sight when the handheld is shared with a less technical family member.
The limitation is scope. A game may require a launcher, anti-cheat component, media codec, or compatibility layer that changes how well it works. A “playable” label or a community report is useful, but it is not a guarantee for every patch, multiplayer mode, or accessory. Verify your own must-play list rather than assuming that the Steam logo means identical behavior to a desktop PC.
Windows 11: a conventional PC with handheld compromises
Windows 11 Home gives the Ally X and Claw 8 AI+ access to the normal PC desktop and a broad range of launchers and utilities. That is valuable if your library spans multiple stores, if you use mods that expect Windows, or if you need software that has no SteamOS path.
The trade-off is maintenance. A handheld screen and thumbsticks are not a mouse and keyboard, so account sign-in, driver prompts, file management, and launcher updates can feel awkward without a dock or Bluetooth accessories. Windows updates may also change power behavior or require a restart at an inconvenient time. A controller-focused launcher can reduce friction, but it does not remove the underlying desktop.
The operating-system choice is no longer identical to the brand choice
Lenovo announced Legion Go S configurations at CES 2025, including a SteamOS-powered option. That means a buyer can encounter a non-Valve device using SteamOS. Verify the precise Go S configuration and whether it is currently sold in your region before treating it as an available alternative; the announcement alone does not establish present stock or identical software support.
Compatibility: check games one by one
Build a short list of games before choosing hardware. Include the games you play weekly, the titles you intend to buy, multiplayer games with anti-cheat, and any launcher-exclusive games. Record the store, whether the game needs a separate launcher, whether you use mods, and whether you need cloud saves or cross-progression.

- List the exact edition. Standard, deluxe, remastered, and subscription versions can use different launchers or anti-cheat modules.
- Check the operating system path. On SteamOS, look for current compatibility reports and note whether they cover the latest game update. On Windows, confirm that the launcher and anti-cheat install normally.
- Check controller behavior. A game can launch successfully but still require a mouse, keyboard, gyro mapping, or custom layout.
- Check storage needs. A large game plus shader caches and updates can consume more space than its initial download suggests.
- Check multiplayer requirements. Anti-cheat support can differ between operating systems and can change after a game update.
Do not treat a single community post as a permanent guarantee. Compatibility changes with game patches, operating-system updates, drivers, and launcher revisions. For an expensive purchase, verify the title shortly before ordering and again after initial setup.
Hardware comparison that affects real use
Processor and graphics capability
The Ally X uses AMD’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme with eight cores, 16 threads, and a maximum listed clock of 5.0 GHz. The Claw 8 AI+ uses Intel Core Ultra 7 258V. Those labels identify the platforms, but they do not provide a universal frame-rate ranking. Handheld performance depends on power limits, cooling, memory configuration, driver version, game engine, resolution, upscaling, and the selected graphics preset.
MSI highlights efficiency and XeSS support for the Claw 8 AI+. Treat those as manufacturer claims, not as proof that every game will run faster or last longer on battery. XeSS support also depends on the game and its implementation; a title without a suitable upscaler cannot benefit from that feature.
Valve’s official Steam Deck page remains the source to consult for the current hardware details of the OLED and LCD variants. Because the variants differ, do not use one Deck configuration’s display, battery, storage, or availability to describe the entire family.
Display size and refresh rate
The Claw 8 AI+ has an 8-inch 120 Hz touchscreen with VRR. A higher refresh ceiling can make supported games and the interface feel smoother, while VRR can reduce visible tearing when frame rates fluctuate. It does not create extra performance; the game still has to render enough frames to use the refresh rate.
Screen size is a comfort decision as much as a specification. A larger panel can improve text legibility and strategy-game interfaces, but it can also increase the device’s overall footprint. Compare the exact Deck and Ally display variant you intend to buy rather than assuming that every model in a family has the same panel.
Weight and ergonomics
ASUS lists 715 g for the cited UK specification of the 2025 Ally X. That number is meaningful only with the same measurement method and regional configuration. The Claw’s display and battery choices may affect its size and balance, but the supplied specifications do not establish a directly comparable weight.
Before purchase, consider grip thickness, stick placement, trigger travel, button reach, fan noise near your hands, and whether you play lying down or at a desk. A device that is technically faster but uncomfortable can be a worse daily choice. If possible, hold the exact model or check a retailer’s return policy.

Battery capacity is not battery life
ASUS lists an 80 Wh battery for the Ally X, and MSI lists 80 Wh for the Claw 8 AI+. Watt-hours describe stored energy, not how long a particular game will run. Runtime changes with the game’s CPU/GPU load, frame-rate cap, brightness, speakers, wireless radios, refresh rate, Windows or SteamOS activity, and power mode.
There is no matched runtime comparison in the available material. Do not publish or rely on an hours figure unless the tester used equivalent games, settings, brightness, power limits, and firmware. For your own use, compare tests that resemble your workload: a demanding 3D game, an older indie title, and video playback can produce very different results.
Ports and expansion
The Claw 8 AI+ provides two Thunderbolt 4 ports. Those can be useful for a dock, external display, storage, or other high-bandwidth accessories, subject to the dock’s power and display support. Confirm which port handles charging and video output in the manual for your exact SKU.

MicroSD expansion is a practical option for compatible games and media. It increases capacity, not frame rate. Check the manufacturer’s supported card type and speed guidance, and keep the most frequently played or most latency-sensitive games on the fastest internal storage available to the device.
Performance: how to compare without being misled
A single benchmark chart cannot decide this comparison. Windows Central’s MSI review reports results for the tested Claw configuration and its own methods; those numbers should be read as measurements of that review unit, firmware, power mode, drivers, game versions, and settings. They are not matched tests of the Ally X and every Steam Deck variant.
For a fair comparison, require all of the following:
- The exact model and memory/storage configuration.
- The same game build and graphics preset.
- The same output resolution and upscaling mode.
- The same frame-rate cap, power limit, and performance profile.
- The same firmware, graphics driver, and operating-system update level where possible.
- Reported average and low-percentile frame rates, not just a peak number.
- Temperature, fan behavior, and battery draw measured under the same conditions.
When those controls are absent, use benchmark results to understand a device, not to declare a universal winner. A game that favors one driver or API can reverse the order in another title.

Steam Deck setup checklist
- Choose OLED or LCD and confirm storage capacity and regional availability.
- Connect the charger and install SteamOS updates before downloading a large library.
- Sign in to Steam and review compatibility for your must-play games.
- Set a per-game frame-rate cap and graphics preset before judging battery behavior.
- Test suspend and resume with the games you actually play; some titles handle sleep better than others.
- Install a microSD card only after confirming compatibility and formatting it in the device.
Windows handheld setup checklist
- Complete Windows 11 Home setup, including updates, account sign-in, privacy choices, and recovery options.
- Install the manufacturer’s control software, firmware, chipset, graphics, and controller updates.
- Update each game launcher separately and verify that cloud saves are enabled where you need them.
- Create a controller-friendly shortcut or launcher for games you play most often.
- Set display refresh rate, brightness, power mode, and frame-rate caps before comparing battery life.
- Test the on-screen keyboard, sleep/wake behavior, external display, and controller mapping.
Windows setup is not inherently unreliable, but it exposes more PC maintenance than SteamOS. If your priority is “turn it on and play,” count those extra steps as part of the ownership experience rather than treating them as a one-time inconvenience.

Prices, configurations, and availability
Handheld pricing changes by country, storage tier, retailer, tax, promotions, and release date. A 2026 comparison lists prices for its own market and configurations; those figures are not global MSRP and may not match current listings. Check the manufacturer’s page and reputable local retailers on the day you buy.
Compare total cost, not only the headline device price. A larger storage tier, compatible microSD card, protective case, replacement charger, dock, and external keyboard can change the budget. Do not pay for an accessory that solves a problem your normal use does not create.
Regional bundles can also alter weight and portability if the included charger differs. Confirm the plug type, wattage, warranty region, return window, and whether the listing is new, refurbished, or imported.

Expecting a dock to fix every Windows problem
A USB-C dock can make monitor, keyboard, mouse, and wired-network use easier, but it does not remove Windows updates or launcher maintenance. Confirm power delivery, display support, and port compatibility for the specific handheld.
A practical buying process
- Write your must-play list. Mark Steam-only, non-Steam, multiplayer, modded, and launcher-dependent games.
- Choose the operating-system shortlist. Start with Steam Deck or a verified SteamOS configuration for Steam-first use; start with Ally X or Claw 8 AI+ for Windows needs.
- Fix the exact model. Record generation, SKU, storage, memory, display, charger, and region.
- Check current compatibility. Verify your top games and any anti-cheat or launcher requirements immediately before purchase.
- Compare controlled tests. Use same-game results with stated resolution, power, settings, driver, and test date.
- Assess the body and battery. Compare measured weight, display comfort, controls, and workload-specific runtime.
- Calculate the complete price. Include storage expansion, dock, case, and any accessories you genuinely need.
- Buy where returns are clear. Use the return period to test your real games, suspend behavior, controls, wireless performance, and charger.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—prove
The official manufacturer and Valve pages are appropriate for model specifications and operating-system details. They do not establish that one device wins every game, that one operating system is trouble-free for every user, or that a larger display is automatically more comfortable.
Independent reviews can add measured performance and battery results, but the test conditions must travel with the number. A review of one Claw configuration cannot stand in for every Claw model, and a benchmark on one Ally X firmware cannot predict a different power profile after an update.

Final decision
Pick the Steam Deck when Steam is your center of gravity and a controller-first interface is worth prioritizing over maximum launcher flexibility. Pick the ROG Xbox Ally X (2025) when you want a current Windows handheld with the specified Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme platform and are comfortable managing Windows. Pick the MSI Claw 8 AI+ A2VM when Intel, its 8-inch 120 Hz VRR display, 80 Wh battery, and Thunderbolt 4 connectivity match your needs.
Before paying, validate the exact games, model, settings, measured runtime, controls, and regional price. That process is more reliable than choosing a winner from a family name or an isolated benchmark.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Steam Deck better than the ROG Xbox Ally X for every game?
No. SteamOS may be simpler for Steam titles, while the Windows-based Ally X can be a better fit for some launchers and software. Check each important game and its current anti-cheat, launcher, and controller requirements.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does the MSI Claw 8 AI+ prove that Intel handhelds are faster?
No. It is one specific Intel model. Performance depends on the game, power limit, drivers, firmware, settings, and configuration. Use matched tests rather than the processor brand alone.
Do the Ally X and Claw 8 AI+ have the same battery life because both list 80 Wh?
No. 80 Wh is capacity, not runtime. Workload, brightness, refresh rate, power mode, software, and game settings determine how long either device lasts.
Can I use a microSD card to increase handheld performance?
A compatible microSD card adds storage but does not increase frame rate. Confirm the exact device’s card support and keep performance-sensitive games on suitable internal storage when practical.
