Steam Deck is the clearer choice if you want a handheld built around a documented Steam library and Valve’s per-game compatibility ratings. That does not prove it runs every game, or that it is faster than every ARM handheld. “ARM handheld” covers devices with different operating systems and software paths, and the available evidence does not provide a named ARM model or a like-for-like performance test. Compare specific devices and games—not processor labels alone.
What are you comparing?
Steam Deck is a handheld PC running SteamOS 3, which Valve describes as Arch-based. For Windows games without native Linux builds, Steamworks describes Proton as the route to running them on Steam Deck. Proton is a compatibility layer, not a guarantee that every game will work. Valve’s Steam Deck specifications and Steamworks’ compatibility documentation explain that software baseline.

By contrast, “ARM handheld” identifies a processor architecture, not a single operating system, storefront, launcher, compatibility layer, or game catalog. Without a particular model, it is not possible to say whether a device installs Steam, runs a game through a translation or emulation layer, streams it, or uses a different source altogether. Those paths can produce very different setup requirements and results.
Can ARM handhelds play Steam games?
Some may be able to access Steam games through a particular device’s software path, but the category name alone does not establish that. Check the exact model’s operating system, supported launcher, and method for running each title. A game available in a Steam library is not automatically installable or playable on every ARM device.

- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
When comparing devices, distinguish among a native build, a compatibility or emulation layer, cloud streaming, and a separate launcher. These are not equivalent: streaming depends on an internet connection and a service, while local play depends on the device’s software and hardware supporting the game.
Is Steam Deck better for compatibility?
For Steam games, Steam Deck offers a more clearly documented compatibility path: Proton for many Windows games and Valve’s per-title ratings to help set expectations. That makes it easier to assess than an unspecified ARM handheld, but it is not evidence that Deck compatibility is universal or that it beats every named ARM device.
What Steam Deck Verified means
Valve’s Verified program checks whether a game meets Deck-specific expectations, including support for the device’s default resolution, readable text, and compatibility of the game and its middleware when run through Proton. Valve’s rating information is updated and can change; a rating is useful guidance, not a promise about every future game update or every configuration. See Valve’s Steam Deck Verified criteria.

A Verified result applies to Steam Deck. It does not transfer to an ARM handheld: that device may use a different operating system, launcher, or runtime. Likewise, an ARM device’s ability to run one game says nothing by itself about another title.
What to check for an individual game
- Does it launch and reach playable gameplay?
- Do required middleware and anti-cheat components work on that device and software path?
- Are text, controls, and default settings usable on its screen and input layout?
- Does it work out of the box, or require configuration, an alternate launcher, community tools, or streaming?
Which runs games faster?
There is no supported performance winner between Steam Deck and ARM handhelds as a category. A fair answer requires named devices and the same game version, graphics settings, resolution, power mode, and test method, along with measured results. No matched Deck-versus-ARM benchmark is established here, so claims that ARM is inherently faster or slower would be speculation.
For a useful comparison, look for results that disclose those conditions and compare the same game on each exact model. Frame rates without settings and test conditions are not enough to establish which device performs better for your use.

What hardware and portability details can you compare?
Valve lists a 1280 × 800 display and an estimated 2–8 hours of gameplay battery life in its current Steam Deck technical specifications. The battery figure is a manufacturer estimate, not a like-for-like measurement against an ARM handheld. Exact screen, battery, size, storage, and price comparisons require a named ARM model and matching regional product information.

Valve provides a per-game option to select or force a Steam Play compatibility tool. In Steam, open the game’s Properties, select Compatibility, then choose the compatibility tool. This is a troubleshooting option, not a guaranteed fix; behavior can depend on the title and its components. The steps are documented in Steam Support’s software and troubleshooting guide.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Can you play offline?
Valve says an installed game can be played while Steam Deck is offline unless that specific game requires an internet connection. Offline availability therefore depends partly on the individual title, not only on the handheld. See the Steam Deck FAQ.
How to choose between a Deck and a specific ARM handheld
- Name the models. “ARM handheld” is too broad for a device-to-device recommendation.
- Trace the game path. Confirm the operating system, storefront or launcher, and whether play is native, through a compatibility or emulation layer, or streamed.
- Check your actual games. Look for per-title launch, middleware, controls, text, and setup results on each device.
- Compare performance under matching conditions. Use results that identify the game version, resolution, settings, power mode, and test method.
- Compare portability on exact specifications. Check screen, controls, storage, battery claims, size, and regional price for the models you would buy.
If a documented Steam library and Valve’s compatibility ratings are your priority, Steam Deck is the more straightforward starting point. If considering an ARM device, decide from evidence for that exact model and the games you intend to play—not from ARM as a label.
