Verified means Valve found that a game works great on Steam Deck out of the box. Playable means it functions, but may require a manual step such as changing controls, opening the on-screen keyboard, or navigating a launcher with the touchscreen. The key difference is how much setup you may need—not simply whether a game works.
What does Steam Deck Verified mean?
Valve’s Deck Verified label indicates that a game works great on Steam Deck right out of the box. Valve reviews four areas: input, display, seamlessness, and system support. That includes whether the default controls work, controller prompts match the Deck, text is legible, the game uses supported display settings, and the game and required middleware work with Proton when applicable.

Valve’s compatibility criteria add that the default configuration should provide access to all content, make required text entry usable with controller input, and reach a playable framerate. The documentation includes a 30 fps at 800p condition in its shared Steam Deck and Steam Machine criteria; that is one part of a broader compatibility review, not a promise of identical performance in every game or situation.

What is the difference between Verified and Playable?
| Rating | Valve’s meaning | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | Works great on Deck out of the box and passes Valve’s compatibility checks. | Usually the clearest sign that you can start playing with little or no setup. |
| Playable | The game functions but may require manual tweaking. Valve’s examples include choosing a community controller layout, opening the on-screen keyboard yourself, or using the touchscreen to navigate a launcher. | Read the game’s compatibility notes to see whether the required workaround is acceptable to you. |
| Unsupported | Valve’s current review considers the game nonfunctional on Deck. | Do not count on it working; check the current compatibility details for the stated issue. |
| Unknown | Valve has not completed a compatibility review or published an official result. | This means there is no official rating, not that Valve found the game fails. |
Valve’s player-facing definition says a Playable game “may require some manual tweaking by the user to play.” The examples show why the rating is not a synonym for broken: a game can run while still asking you to handle a control, keyboard, or launcher task yourself.

Can you play a Steam Deck Playable game?
Yes. Playable means the game functions on Deck, but one or more parts of the experience may not meet Valve’s out-of-the-box standard. Whether that is a problem depends on the specific issue and your tolerance for setup. A touchscreen tap to pass a launcher is a small inconvenience for some players; awkward controls or unreadable interface text may matter much more during regular play.
Open the game’s Steam store page or library entry and inspect its Steam Deck compatibility section. Valve Support’s Steam Deck software and troubleshooting guide also directs players to the individual game’s compatibility details. Use those notes to check the controls, prompts, text, launcher behavior, and Proton or anti-cheat support relevant to your use.

What do the ratings not guarantee?
A compatibility badge is not a game-quality score or a recommendation to buy. Nor does Verified guarantee a particular battery life, image quality, or frame rate in all play conditions. Valve’s criteria do include a playable-framerate requirement, but the badge is best understood as compatibility guidance and an indication of how much user intervention may be needed. Valve also documents technical recommendations that may improve comfort, battery life, or performance without changing a game’s badge.
Can a game’s Steam Deck rating change?
Yes. Valve says compatibility review is ongoing as games, Deck software, and Proton evolve. It may retest a title after Proton updates, when tests are added, or when reports suggest existing test information is inaccurate or incomplete. Check the current store or library listing rather than relying on an old screenshot or article. Valve says ratings for tested titles apply to both Steam Deck LCD and OLED models.

How to choose between a Verified and Playable game
If you want the least setup, Verified is the stronger signal. If a title is Playable, make the decision from its specific notes rather than the label alone:
- Check whether the default controls and button prompts are usable, or whether you must choose a different layout.
- Look for touchscreen or mouse-style launcher steps that may interrupt play.
- Consider whether required text is readable and whether text entry works comfortably.
- For games that rely on Proton, check for issues with the game itself or required middleware such as anti-cheat.
Ratings affect how games are presented, not whether they remain available to buy or in your library. A title can still appear in Steam even if it is Unsupported or has not yet received a rating.
