With a compatible dock or hub, you can connect a TV or monitor, USB peripherals, wired Ethernet and power in one setup. Keep the Deck’s port capabilities separate from the lower published display limits of Valve’s Docking Station.
What the Steam Deck’s USB-C port supports
Valve lists USB-C connectivity on both LCD and OLED models, including USB data and DisplayPort video output. The LCD specifications name DisplayPort 1.4 Alt Mode and USB 3.2 Gen 2; the OLED specifications list DisplayPort output and USB 3 Gen 2. Valve gives the Deck port a maximum of up to 8K at 60 Hz or 4K at 120 Hz. Those are port specifications, not a guarantee that a particular display, cable, adapter, dock or game will support those modes.

Valve also specifies a 45 W USB-C PD 3.0 power supply for both models. Its hardware overview describes the USB-C port as able to carry video, audio and input when docked. Steam Deck LCD technical specifications, Steam Deck OLED technical specifications, Steam Deck hardware overview
Best ways to use the port
Connect a TV or monitor
Use a compatible USB-C-to-display connection or a dock or hub with the video output your screen accepts. Valve’s Docking Station provides DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.0, with published output modes up to 4K at 60 Hz or 1440p at 120 Hz. Those figures describe the Docking Station, not the Deck’s bare USB-C port; they are lower than the maximum modes Valve publishes for the port itself.

Attach a keyboard, mouse or controller
A dock makes it easier to use USB peripherals alongside a larger display. Valve names controllers, keyboards and mice as compatible peripheral types, and the official Docking Station has three USB-A 3.1 Gen 1 ports. Other USB devices may work, but Valve’s overview does not establish blanket compatibility with every peripheral.

Add wired Ethernet
The official Docking Station includes Gigabit Ethernet, useful when you want a wired network connection at a desk or entertainment setup. Ethernet is a dock feature, not a built-in function of the Deck’s USB-C socket. For another hub or dock, confirm that it actually includes Ethernet.
Charge while docked
The official Docking Station accepts USB-C Power Delivery passthrough input, so a docked setup can provide power as well as connections. Valve specifies a 45 W USB-C PD 3.0 power supply for the LCD and OLED Deck. For a third-party dock or charger, check its published Power Delivery output and compatibility; the label “USB-C” alone does not establish that it supplies sufficient power.

Carry audio over the connection
Valve says multichannel audio is available via DisplayPort over USB-C, standard USB-C or Bluetooth. That lets a compatible display or connected audio setup carry sound as part of a docked arrangement.
Use the Deck with a desktop setup
Valve describes the Steam Deck as usable as a PC and notes that it has a desktop environment. Connecting a display, keyboard and mouse can make that mode more convenient. A dock changes how you connect accessories; it does not change the Deck’s underlying performance or guarantee that every desktop application will work as expected.

- Video: Check whether you need HDMI, DisplayPort or both, and confirm the resolution and refresh rate for the output you will use.
- USB: Count the peripherals you want connected and check the number and type of available ports.
- Networking: Confirm that the dock includes Gigabit Ethernet if you want a wired connection.
- Power: Check the dock’s USB-C Power Delivery input and output specifications and confirm they meet your needs.
- Multiple displays: Check how the product implements MST and verify current Steam Deck and software support before relying on a multi-monitor setup.
What to know about multiple monitors
Valve’s Docking Station specifications say MST enables multi-monitor support, but the current page notes that support requires both its HDMI and DisplayPort ports to be in use. The same page describes this as a support detail subject to an update, so check Valve’s live documentation before planning around it. A third-party dock may implement multi-monitor output differently; verify its MST behavior and current Deck support rather than assuming it will work the same way.
