You can expand every Steam Deck with a microSD card, and you can replace its internal SSD with the correct single-sided M.2 2230 drive. You cannot treat the RAM like a laptop memory module: Valve specifies onboard LPDDR5 and publishes no owner-facing RAM-upgrade procedure. Adding a card is the low-risk option. Replacing the SSD requires opening the Deck, following model-specific disassembly steps, and recovering or re-imaging SteamOS afterward.
The short answer: three different kinds of “upgrade”
“Memory” is used loosely in many upgrade discussions, but the Steam Deck has two separate resources:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- RAM (system memory): working memory used by SteamOS and games. It is soldered or otherwise onboard rather than presented as a removable module. Valve’s current OLED specification lists 16 GB of LPDDR5 at 6400 MT/s; Valve’s LCD hardware page also lists 16 GB of RAM. Neither page documents a user-replaceable memory module or a supported RAM replacement procedure.
- Internal storage: the built-in eMMC or NVMe drive that holds SteamOS, games and personal files. iFixit’s LCD and OLED replacement guides identify a single-sided M.2 2230 SSD, so an SSD swap is possible if you use that physical format and follow the guide for your model.
- Removable storage: the microSD slot. Valve says every Steam Deck model supports expanding storage by microSD. On the OLED specification, the slot is documented as UHS-I and compatible with SD, SDHC and SDXC cards.
Those options are not interchangeable. A larger microSD card gives you more removable game space; it does not add RAM. An SSD replacement changes the internal drive; it does not increase the Deck’s 16 GB working-memory allocation. A RAM upgrade is not an ordinary owner project based on the published specifications.
What Valve’s model specifications tell you
Storage tiers differ by model and by when the hardware was sold. Valve’s LCD hardware page lists these configurations:
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Hardware family | Internal storage configurations listed by Valve | RAM information | Expansion |
|---|---|---|---|
| LCD Steam Deck | 64 GB eMMC; 256 GB NVMe SSD; 512 GB NVMe SSD | 16 GB RAM is listed; the page does not describe a user-replaceable module | microSD expansion supported across models |
| OLED Steam Deck | 512 GB NVMe and 1 TB NVMe configurations in the current technical specification | 16 GB LPDDR5 onboard, 6400 MT/s | microSD slot; UHS-I, SD, SDHC and SDXC compatibility |
The LCD capacity list is a hardware overview, not a promise that every tier is still sold in every region. OLED and LCD availability, capacities and bundles can change. Check the exact model in your hands and Valve’s current specifications before buying a drive or assuming that an older configuration is still offered.
Can you upgrade Steam Deck RAM?
For normal owner planning, no. The practical boundary is set by the published hardware: Valve describes the RAM as onboard LPDDR5 and gives no slot, module specification or replacement procedure. There is therefore no supported action such as removing a rear cover, inserting a larger SO-DIMM, or selecting a BIOS memory option.
This wording matters. The specifications establish that the memory is onboard; they do not constitute a claim about every possible chip-level board repair performed by a specialist. Such work is outside the documented owner upgrade path, and the cited Valve material provides no instructions, compatibility list or recovery method for it. Treat the installed RAM as fixed when choosing a Deck.
More storage will not solve a problem caused by insufficient RAM. A microSD card and an SSD hold data; neither changes the amount of working memory available to the operating system or games. Conversely, a storage upgrade can address a full library even though the Deck still has the same RAM capacity.
Adding storage without opening the Deck: microSD
MicroSD is the simplest expansion because the slot is designed for it and the case stays closed. Valve’s official OLED announcement states: “All models of Steam Deck support expanding your storage via microSD cards.” The OLED technical specification identifies UHS-I operation and SD, SDHC and SDXC support.

What a card changes
- It adds a separate, removable place for games and files.
- It works across LCD and OLED models, subject to the documented card formats and interface.
- It leaves the factory internal drive in place, so there is no SSD disassembly or SteamOS re-image merely to add capacity.
The available material does not establish a maximum supported card capacity, a particular card model, or a comparative loading-time benchmark. Choose a card that actually meets the documented format and UHS-I requirements, and verify the product’s specifications rather than relying on a seller’s “Steam Deck” label. No tested performance ranking is available here, so do not assume that a particular card matches the internal SSD.
How to use the card
- Power the Deck down or use the system’s normal storage-management controls before inserting or removing the card.
- Insert the microSD card into the slot with the contacts oriented as indicated by the Deck’s slot and card shape. Do not force it.
- Start the Deck and open Steam’s storage-management interface to format or configure the card if SteamOS prompts you. Formatting erases existing contents, so copy anything important elsewhere first.
- In the same storage interface, select the card as an install location when moving or installing games. Keep the internal drive available for SteamOS and for software you want on internal storage.
- Use the system’s eject or shutdown routine before removing the card. Removing it while data is being written can corrupt the card or installed files.
The exact menu wording can change with SteamOS updates. The hardware point remains constant: microSD expansion does not require opening either Deck version.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can you replace the Steam Deck SSD?
Yes, but only with the right drive and a willingness to perform a repair. iFixit’s LCD and OLED guides specify a single-sided M.2 2230 SSD. “M.2” alone is not enough: a longer 2242, 2260 or 2280 drive is a different physical length, and the guides do not authorize substituting one simply because its connector is also called M.2.
The replacement is an internal-storage change, not a RAM upgrade. It can replace the built-in eMMC or NVMe storage, depending on the original LCD configuration, but the cited guides do not establish a maximum supported SSD capacity or guarantee for any particular retail model. Confirm the drive’s actual 2230 size and single-sided construction before opening the Deck.
What the SSD route costs in effort
- Disassembly: you remove the back cover and internal shields or components according to the LCD or OLED guide.
- Handling risk: the guides call out battery precautions and warn that leaving a microSD card inserted can cause it to snap when the back cover is removed.
- Tools: precision drivers and suitable opening tools are task-enabling supplies. No particular kit has been evaluated here.
- Software recovery: after the physical swap, the guides direct you to Valve’s Steam Deck recovery instructions to restore or re-image SteamOS.
Because the procedure is model-specific, do not copy an LCD teardown step-for-step onto an OLED unit or reverse the instruction. Valve has described OLED internal components as easier to access while qualifying repair and modification guidance for trained professionals; that is a caution about skill and responsibility, not a promise that the work is risk-free for a first-time opener.

Before opening an LCD Steam Deck
iFixit’s LCD SSD guidance includes several precautions that should happen before the first screw is removed:
- Reduce the battery charge below 25%.
- Remove the microSD card. The guide warns that it can snap if left inserted while the back cover is removed.
- Power the Deck down completely and unplug external cables.
- Consider Valve’s recommended BIOS battery-storage mode before internal repair.
- Use the LCD-specific SSD replacement guide for screw locations, cable handling and the order of operations.
These are preparation controls, not performance tips. A low battery reduces the energy present during the work; removing the card prevents a known physical failure; and storage mode is the manufacturer-referenced state for internal servicing. Keep screws organized and stop if a panel, cable or shield does not release as the guide indicates rather than applying force.
OLED SSD replacement is a separate procedure
The OLED guide also identifies a single-sided M.2 2230 SSD and points to Valve’s recovery guidance, but the internal layout and steps are not identical to the LCD model. Start with the OLED-specific guide, remove the microSD card before opening, and follow its battery and cable instructions in the order shown.
Do not infer that an OLED’s newer 512 GB or 1 TB factory tier makes every larger aftermarket drive supported. The available documentation confirms the replacement form factor, not a maximum capacity or a list of validated brands. Verify the physical dimensions and the drive’s own specifications.
What happens to SteamOS after an SSD swap?
A replacement SSD is normally blank or contains an installation that is not associated with the Deck’s previous drive. The iFixit guides therefore direct the owner to Valve’s Steam Deck recovery instructions after the hardware work. Plan for a recovery or re-image step rather than expecting the Deck to boot exactly as it did before.

- Finish the physical replacement and reassemble the Deck according to the guide for your model.
- Use Valve’s official Steam Deck recovery instructions to create or use the required recovery media and start the recovery environment.
- Choose the recovery action that matches your goal. A re-image can reinstall SteamOS and may erase data on the new drive; read Valve’s current prompts carefully.
- Complete first-boot setup, sign in, apply available SteamOS updates and check that the new internal storage appears in the storage settings.
- Reinstall or restore games and personal files from your library or backups. A microSD card that was not formatted may still contain its own data, but do not assume that every game installation will be recognized without verification.
Valve’s recovery documentation is the authority for the current image, media and menu choices. The guides establish that recovery is required; they do not provide a universal promise that a particular personal-data migration will be automatic.
LCD versus OLED: which instructions and assumptions differ?
| Question | LCD | OLED |
|---|---|---|
| Can storage be expanded without opening the case? | Yes, with a compatible microSD card. | Yes, with a compatible microSD card; Valve documents the OLED slot as UHS-I and SD/SDHC/SDXC compatible. |
| Is RAM an owner module? | Valve lists 16 GB RAM and no user replacement procedure. | Valve lists 16 GB LPDDR5 onboard at 6400 MT/s and no user replacement procedure. |
| Internal SSD form factor | iFixit specifies a single-sided M.2 2230 drive. | iFixit specifies a single-sided M.2 2230 drive. |
| Repair instructions | Use the LCD-specific guide; it includes the below-25%-battery recommendation and microSD warning. | Use the OLED-specific guide; do not substitute the LCD teardown sequence. |
| After replacement | Use Valve’s Steam Deck recovery instructions to restore or re-image SteamOS. | Use Valve’s Steam Deck recovery instructions to restore or re-image SteamOS. |
The shared form factor does not make the procedures interchangeable. Treat the model identification step as part of the upgrade, not as an optional detail.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing between microSD and an internal SSD
Choose microSD when
- You want more game space without opening the Deck.
- You need a removable library that can move between compatible devices.
- You prefer to avoid disassembly, battery precautions and operating-system recovery.
- You have not verified a specific 2230 SSD’s dimensions and construction.
Choose an SSD replacement when
- You want to replace the built-in drive rather than add a removable volume.
- You are comfortable following a model-specific repair guide and handling small connectors and screws.
- You have a confirmed single-sided M.2 2230 SSD.
- You have a backup plan and are prepared to restore or re-image SteamOS.
Do not choose either as a RAM solution
Neither path increases the Deck’s onboard LPDDR5 allocation. If your concern is a game or workload that needs more working memory, adding storage will not change that hardware limit. The published owner-facing options are storage options only.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying the wrong M.2 length
An M.2 label describes the connector and family, not the complete physical specification. The documented replacement is 2230 and single-sided. Check both details in the drive’s technical listing before purchase.

Using the LCD guide on an OLED Deck
The models have separate guides. Start with the guide matching the hardware in front of you and follow its cable, shield and screw sequence.
Expecting a new SSD to boot without recovery
The replacement guides direct owners to Valve’s recovery instructions. Have the recovery process and any required media ready before disassembly.
Assuming a capacity or speed that is not documented
The cited material does not establish a maximum SSD capacity, a particular card or drive’s benchmark, comparative game-loading times, current parts inventory or a guaranteed repair outcome. Treat those as questions requiring separate verification instead of filling the gaps with a seller’s claim.

RAM is working memory; SSD and microSD space is persistent storage. The Deck’s published 16 GB onboard RAM remains unchanged after either storage expansion.
A practical upgrade checklist
- Identify whether the Deck is LCD or OLED.
- Decide whether removable capacity is sufficient. If so, use a microSD card that meets Valve’s documented format and interface requirements.
- If replacing the internal drive, verify “M.2 2230” and “single-sided” on the SSD’s actual specifications.
- Back up saves and personal files before formatting or re-imaging anything.
- For an LCD repair, lower battery charge below 25%; for either model, power down, unplug cables and remove the microSD card.
- Use the model-specific iFixit guide rather than a generic M.2 tutorial.
- After reassembly, follow Valve’s Steam Deck recovery instructions and confirm the new drive in SteamOS storage settings.
- Keep expectations accurate: no documented owner RAM upgrade exists, and no cited source here promises a particular maximum storage capacity or benchmark.
Bottom line for buyers and owners
The safe default is microSD: it adds capacity to every Steam Deck without opening the case. An internal SSD swap is a legitimate, more involved repair when the replacement is a single-sided M.2 2230 drive and you are prepared for model-specific disassembly plus SteamOS recovery. RAM is different: Valve documents 16 GB of onboard LPDDR5 (including 6400 MT/s on the OLED specification) and provides no user upgrade path, so choose the Deck’s memory configuration as fixed.
