For most Steam Deck owners, leave shader pre-caching enabled if you would rather accept downloads and background processing than risk more shader work at game launch or during play. Turn it off only if those downloads or processing are a real inconvenience and you are willing to test how your own games behave. Neither setting is a guaranteed performance upgrade, and the available sources do not establish one best choice for every Deck game.
What Steam Deck shader pre-caching does
Steam shader pre-caching downloads pre-compiled shader data when hardware and driver support allow. Valve says the feature is intended to reduce load times and in-game stuttering during the first few launches of supported OpenGL- and Vulkan-based games. That is a qualified benefit, not a promise that every game will load faster, run at a higher frame rate, or stop stuttering. Valve’s Steam Client Update notes from December 13, 2017 describe the feature’s purpose and qualifications.

This is a setting about shader data and when shader work may happen; it is not a graphics-quality or frame-rate toggle. Valve also says the feature may use additional bandwidth to upload and analyze a shader usage report after a game session.

Disabling pre-caching can reduce shader-cache downloads. The trade-off is that shader compilation may instead take place locally when a game launches or when a shader is first encountered during play. That can mean a longer launch or shader-related stutter, but community guidance describes a possibility rather than a measured result for every Steam Deck or game. A Steam Community discussion offers anecdotal guidance; it is not a controlled Deck comparison.

With pre-caching enabled, Steam may download supported shader data and process it in the background. That activity can be inconvenient, and it does not guarantee every cache will compile as expected. An individual ValveSoftware issue filed in October 2024 reports downloaded cache that was not compiled in the background. It documents one reported case, not a general failure rate.
Compare the trade-offs
| Consideration | Pre-caching enabled | Pre-caching disabled |
|---|---|---|
| Network activity | May download supported shader data and use bandwidth for shader usage reports, according to Valve. | Can reduce shader-cache downloads; the sources do not quantify the amount saved. |
| Processing timing | Steam can process downloaded shader data in the background, depending on support and circumstances. | More shader compilation may happen locally at launch or as shaders are encountered, according to community guidance. |
| Launch delays | Valve says the feature can reduce load times in the first few launches of supported games. | A longer launch is possible if shader compilation is needed then; no Deck-wide timing is established. |
| Stutter during play | Valve says pre-caching can reduce in-game stuttering in early launches of supported games. | Stutter is possible when a shader is compiled as it is first encountered; it is not guaranteed. |
| Game-by-game fit | Benefit depends on whether a game’s shaders are supported and on hardware and driver support. | Results can differ by game; the sources provide no quantified comparison for a current Steam Deck. |
Choose based on your games and network
Leave it enabled if downloads are acceptable
Choose this if you prefer Steam to download supported pre-compiled shaders and want to reduce shader compilation work at launch or during play where the feature applies. Expect some additional downloads or background work, without assuming that every game will benefit.

Try disabling it if processing is the problem
If shader downloads or background processing are more disruptive than possible local compilation, disabling the feature is a reasonable experiment. Check the games you actually play for longer launches or shader-related stutter; the available evidence does not show that turning it off improves performance overall.

Change the setting without relying on an outdated menu path
Valve’s 2017 announcement confirms that users can disable the feature in Steam Settings, but the sources here do not verify the current SteamOS menu path or labels. Open Steam Settings on your Deck and check the wording shown in your current client rather than following an unverified step-by-step path. If you change the setting, use your usual games and network conditions to judge the result.

Seeing Vulkan shader processing again does not, by itself, prove the setting is broken. Shader caches can change when a game or graphics components change, according to community discussion, and Valve’s feature notes qualify availability by hardware and driver support. The sources do not establish how often a particular Deck or game should rebuild or process its cache.
