Which platform fits your game library?
SteamOS and Steam Deck OLED
The Deck is built around SteamOS 3 and a Steam-focused experience. Its two trackpads can provide mouse-like input in games or applications where analog sticks are awkward, and its dedicated handheld interface is a central part of the experience. If most of your library is in Steam and you want a console-like way to browse and play it, this is the more direct fit.
Do not assume every Steam game works equally well on the Deck. Compatibility can vary by title, and you should check the specific games you intend to play rather than treating the platform label as a guarantee.

Windows 11 and ROG Xbox Ally X
The Ally X runs Windows 11. ASUS says it can access supported Windows games across Xbox and other PC stores, making it a stronger fit if your library depends on multiple launchers or Windows applications. ASUS also promotes Xbox Cloud Gaming; it requires a Game Pass membership. Check the game’s compatibility and any subscription or service requirements before buying.
Windows provides broader storefront flexibility, but it is not a promise that every game will behave well with handheld controls or run smoothly. The best question is not simply “Which has more games?” but “Can the games and services I use run the way I want on this device?” See ASUS’s ROG Xbox Ally X product information for its platform and service details.
Display: OLED contrast or higher resolution and refresh?
The Steam Deck OLED has the larger display at 7.4 inches and uses an HDR OLED panel with 1280 × 800 resolution and refresh up to 90Hz. OLED’s contrast and display character are the attraction; the lower resolution and refresh ceiling are part of the tradeoff.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe Ally X has a 7-inch 1080p IPS panel with refresh up to 120Hz and FreeSync Premium. It offers more pixels and a higher refresh ceiling, but it is not OLED. Neither specification makes one screen universally better: prioritize OLED and the larger panel, or prioritize resolution, refresh features and the content you expect to play.

Performance: what the published specs do—and do not—tell you
On paper, ASUS lists the Ally X with a Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD. Valve lists the Deck OLED with a 6nm Zen 2 APU, 8 RDNA 2 compute units, 16GB of RAM and either a 512GB or 1TB SSD. Those configurations favor the Ally X in raw published hardware specifications.
That is not the same as a verified frame-rate comparison. The available specifications do not establish how many frames either device will deliver in a particular game, or whether a demanding title will run well at the Ally X’s native 1080p resolution. Game, settings, power mode and software support all matter. Choose based on the titles you play and seek results for those exact games and settings if performance is decisive.
Battery: capacity is not runtime
Valve specifies a 50Wh battery and gives the Steam Deck OLED a manufacturer-stated gameplay range of 3–12 hours. ASUS specifies an 80Wh battery for the Ally X, but capacity alone cannot predict how long it will last: the game, display settings and power mode affect consumption.
Tom’s Guide reported 3 hours 12 minutes for the Deck OLED and 2 hours 56 minutes for the Ally X in its respective 2026 battery tests. These are that publication’s test results, not universal runtimes; they should not be treated as a controlled, settings-matched verdict unless the test methods are compared. The ASUS product page also describes a battery comparison using Hollow Knight: Silksong at 720p, a 60 FPS limit, low graphics and Silent mode, comparing the 2025 Ally X with the earlier ROG Ally X—not with the Steam Deck.

Controls, comfort and storage
The Deck’s two built-in trackpads add a control option that can help with mouse-like input. It weighs approximately 640g, compared with 715g for the Ally X in Xbox Wire’s launch specification table. The Deck is lighter by those published figures, though how comfortable either device feels also depends on hand size, grip shape and how long you play.
Both devices support microSD expansion. The Deck’s reader is UHS-I; the Ally X’s is UHS-II. A card is an optional storage purchase, so check the capacity you need, the reader standard and whether your use case makes game loading from a card acceptable. Expansion adds storage, not game performance.
Price and value: check the same market and storage tier
ASUS’s US specification page listed the Ally X at $999.99 in the source information. TechRadar reported its October 2025 launch prices as $999.99 in the US, £799.99 in the UK and AU$1,599 in Australia. Those are launch or source-time figures, not a guarantee of today’s price or availability.
A current, region-matched Steam Deck OLED price was not established alongside those figures. Compare live prices for equivalent storage configurations in your country before deciding which is better value; a historical launch price on one side and a current sale price on the other would not be a fair comparison. TechRadar’s ROG Xbox Ally X review provides the launch-price context.
