The OLED is the better-equipped handheld for screen quality, battery capacity and weight; the LCD can still make sense if you own one or find it for substantially less. Check the ratings for the specific games you want to play before choosing either model.
Do the same Steam games work on OLED and LCD?
Yes, according to Valve’s Deck Verified guidance: “All titles that have been tested, maintain those ratings for both LCD and OLED models.” Compatibility is therefore a game-by-game question, not a reason to assume one Deck version supports more of Steam’s library.

Valve assigns games one of four labels. The rating review considers input, display, whether the game works smoothly, and system support. Reviews are ongoing, and game updates can change behavior, so a rating is useful guidance rather than a permanent guarantee.
- Verified: works great out of the box.
- Playable: works, but may need manual adjustment.
- Unsupported: currently does not work on Steam Deck.
- Unknown: has not been checked.
Look up your priority games in Valve’s compatibility view, particularly if they rely on a launcher, anti-cheat software or unusual controls. A rating does not establish that every unreviewed Steam game will work.

What changes between Steam Deck OLED and LCD?
Valve’s official OLED comparison lists these differences. Battery ranges are manufacturer estimates that depend on the content being played, not guaranteed runtimes.

Is the OLED screen a meaningful upgrade?
The OLED has a larger display and a higher refresh-rate ceiling, and it supports HDR. Both screens have the same 1280 × 800 resolution, so OLED is not a resolution upgrade. Favor it if you value the listed display differences; whether a particular game uses the higher refresh rate depends on the game and settings.

Does the OLED run games faster?
Valve lists an updated APU and efficiency improvements for the OLED model, but its product specifications do not provide controlled, game-by-game frame-rate comparisons. The listed hardware revisions alone do not establish that games run faster. Choose OLED for its documented screen, battery, weight and wireless differences rather than assuming a performance gain.
How much longer does the OLED battery last?
Valve lists a 50Wh battery and a 3–12-hour gameplay range for OLED, compared with 40Wh and 2–8 hours for LCD. Those are manufacturer ranges, and Valve notes that gameplay duration depends on content. The figures indicate greater listed capacity and a higher estimated range for OLED, but they cannot predict how long a specific game will run on your settings.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you use the same storage and game library on either model?
Both models support microSD cards. Valve says games stored on a microSD card appear in the Steam library, so adding one is an option if you need more space; a card is not listed as included hardware. Compare capacity and card specifications before buying.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Internal storage configurations differ by model and can vary with current inventory. Valve’s OLED comparison describes 512GB and 1TB OLED configurations, while its LCD specifications list LCD configurations. Check the live product details for the configuration you are considering rather than assuming a particular capacity or price is available in your region.
Which Steam Deck should you choose?
Choose OLED if you value the hardware upgrades
- You want the larger HDR OLED display and higher refresh-rate ceiling.
- You play away from a charger and prefer the larger listed battery capacity and manufacturer-estimated range.
- You want the lighter model: Valve lists approximate weights of 640g for OLED and 669g for LCD.
- You value its newer listed wireless specifications, while recognizing that actual network performance also depends on your router, environment and service.
Keep or choose LCD if the price makes sense for you
If you already own an LCD Deck, the shared tested compatibility ratings mean that replacing it is not necessary just to access games that Valve has tested. If you are buying, an LCD can be a sensible choice when it costs meaningfully less and you are satisfied with its screen and battery characteristics. Value depends on the actual offer: current prices, stock and regional availability are not established by Valve’s comparison pages.
Make the decision around your actual games
Before buying either model, check the compatibility labels for the titles you plan to play. The OLED does not turn an Unsupported or Unknown rating into a different rating; the same tested status applies to both versions.
