Steam Deck Memory Requirements: How Much RAM Do Handheld PC Games Need?

Steam Deck OLED has 16 GB of unified memory, with GPU access varying by workload. Here’s how to interpret PC game RAM requirements and compatibility ratings.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Steam Deck OLED has 16 GB of onboard LPDDR5 unified memory, not 16 GB of system RAM plus a separate 8 GB VRAM pool. Valve says the GPU can access up to 8 GB of that shared memory depending on workload. A game’s Windows RAM requirement can help indicate its demands, but it does not by itself predict how the game will run on Steam Deck. Check the game’s Steam Deck compatibility rating and its platform-specific requirements too.

How much memory does the Steam Deck have?

Valve lists the Steam Deck OLED with 16 GB of onboard LPDDR5 memory rated at 6400 MT/s on its technical specifications page. The memory is unified: the CPU and integrated graphics share the device’s memory pool rather than drawing from separate system-RAM and graphics-memory capacities.

Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ describes 16 GB of unified memory, with 1 GB dedicated for GPU use and the GPU able to access up to 8 GB depending on workload. Valve also says that the amount shared with the GPU can be changed on a game-by-game basis. Those numbers describe how memory may be allocated within the 16 GB configuration; they are not additive. It would be inaccurate to call the OLED a 16 GB RAM device with an extra 8 GB of VRAM.

In practical terms, “How much VRAM does the Steam Deck have?” does not have the same simple answer as it would for a PC with a discrete graphics card and a fixed VRAM capacity. The integrated GPU uses the shared pool, and the amount it can access varies. That does not establish how much memory a particular game will use or what performance it will achieve.

The OLED product page describes its APU as a 6 nm AMD design with Zen 2 CPU cores and RDNA 2 graphics. That integrated design helps explain Valve’s unified-memory description, but the specifications do not mean every game allocates or uses memory in the same way.

It helps to separate capacity from allocation. Capacity is the total onboard memory Valve lists: 16 GB. Allocation describes how that shared memory is made available for different work, including GPU tasks. Valve’s “up to 8 GB” wording is about possible GPU access, not a promise that every title receives a fixed 8 GB block. Nor does the 1 GB dedicated figure mean the remaining 15 GB is a guaranteed, isolated pool for the CPU; the FAQ describes a unified configuration whose use can vary.

Does a game that requires 16 GB of RAM run on Steam Deck?

Not necessarily—and a 16 GB requirement does not, by itself, mean it will fail. A game’s published minimum or recommended memory is one clue about the developer’s target configuration. It is not a direct measurement of the game’s memory use on SteamOS, nor does it guarantee a particular frame rate or overall experience on Steam Deck.

Pay attention to which operating system and build a requirement refers to. Many listings give Windows requirements, while Steam Deck runs SteamOS, which Valve describes as based on Arch Linux on its SteamOS page. A Windows figure should therefore be treated as evidence about the stated Windows configuration, not as a precise Deck memory forecast. Platform differences and the way a game is run matter; the available requirements alone do not quantify those differences.

Steam’s storefront can also present requirements separately for Windows and SteamOS/Linux. For example, the Fading Faith listing gives Windows minimum memory of 8 GB and recommended memory of 16 GB. Its SteamOS/Linux section lists “SteamDeck” for operating system, processor, graphics, and sound card rather than supplying a numeric Linux RAM requirement. This is an example of one listing’s format, not a rule about how games list requirements.

When both a minimum and a recommendation appear, read them as different reference points rather than as a Deck pass/fail test. A minimum is the developer’s stated baseline for the platform and configuration named in that listing; a recommendation is a higher target. Neither field tells you the exact memory the game will consume on Steam Deck, and a recommendation that matches the Deck’s total capacity does not establish that the game will or will not run.

Valve’s official material does not establish a universal RAM cutoff for Steam Deck games, and it does not provide a representative series of game-by-game Deck memory measurements. Avoid treating any single Windows requirement as a definitive pass-or-fail test for the handheld. Use the requirement as a starting point, then look at the title’s Deck compatibility information and any developer-published notes.

How to check whether a game is suitable for Steam Deck

  1. Open the game’s Steam store page. Find the game’s compatibility information and its listed system requirements. Keep the Windows and SteamOS/Linux sections distinct if both are shown.
  2. Read the Deck compatibility rating. Valve’s compatibility review page explains what the ratings mean. Treat the badge as an assessment of the overall handheld experience, not as a memory measurement.
  3. Check the specific friction points. Valve’s review criteria include controls, text input, resolution and text legibility, launchers, and performance. Look for notes about anything that could affect how you play, rather than focusing on RAM alone.
  4. Compare the rating with the requirements and developer notes. A requirement can provide useful context, but it does not override the Deck-specific rating or prove what the game will use on the device.
  5. Interpret “Unknown” as missing review information. It means the review has not been completed; it is not a finding that the game is either compatible or incompatible.

For a practical check, start with the exact game page rather than applying a rule based on its genre, age, or a single RAM number. Confirm whether the requirement is marked minimum or recommended and which operating system it names. Then read the rating’s details: a control or launcher caveat is a different issue from a performance criterion, and neither should be relabeled as a RAM diagnosis. If a listing does not give a Linux memory number, do not infer one from a Windows figure.

What the Steam Deck compatibility ratings tell you

Valve translates its compatibility review into customer-visible ratings. The labels describe whether a game works as a practical Steam Deck experience and how much user intervention may be needed:

Rating What Valve says it means How to use it
Verified The game passes the compatibility checks without configuration work. Evidence that the reviewed experience meets Valve’s checks; it is not a published RAM test or guarantee of a particular memory allocation.
Playable The game functions but may require manual user work. Check the listed details to understand what adjustments or workarounds may be involved.
Unsupported The game does not function because of incompatibility with Proton or specific hardware components. Do not interpret this as a diagnosis of insufficient RAM: the stated cause may involve software compatibility or hardware.
Unknown The game has not completed review. There is no completed Valve compatibility result to rely on; look for other title-specific evidence.

The review includes a playable-frame-rate criterion along with controls, text input, legibility, and launcher behavior. That makes the rating useful for estimating the broader handheld experience. It does not disclose a game’s RAM use, a RAM threshold, or a detailed performance benchmark.

These labels answer a practical compatibility question: does the game work on Deck, and what might a player need to do to use it? They are not a scale from “low memory use” to “high memory use.” In particular, Verified is not a statement that the game uses less than a specified amount of RAM, and Unsupported does not mean that memory capacity is necessarily the problem. Use the badge for Valve’s broader checks and consult the listing or developer notes for game-specific information.

What the memory figures do—and do not—mean

16 GB is the device’s total listed onboard memory

For the Steam Deck OLED, Valve’s specification is 16 GB LPDDR5 onboard memory. The device’s shared-memory design means CPU and GPU work draw on the unified pool. The published total should not be inflated by adding a GPU-access figure to it.

“Up to 8 GB” describes possible GPU access, not extra capacity

Valve says the GPU can access up to 8 GB depending on workload, and that the shared amount can be changed per game. This is a statement about access within the unified configuration—not a claim that every game gets 8 GB, that 8 GB is permanently reserved, or that the Deck has 8 GB of dedicated VRAM in addition to system RAM.

A requirements number is not a game-by-game Deck measurement

Minimum and recommended requirements describe configurations chosen for a particular game and platform. They do not tell you how much memory that title will consume on Steam Deck. The figures also answer different questions: a minimum is not the same as a recommended specification, and neither is a direct promise of smooth performance on another operating system and device.

Valve’s 16 GB, 1 GB, and up-to-8-GB figures describe the device and its GPU-access arrangement. They are not game-specific measurements, performance results, or a formula for deciding whether a title will work. There is no single published threshold here that turns a game’s Windows requirement into a reliable Deck verdict. Keep the device specification, the developer’s listed requirements, and the compatibility review as three separate kinds of information.

Can you upgrade the Steam Deck’s RAM?

Valve’s product specifications identify the OLED memory as onboard, and the product information does not document an owner-accessible RAM upgrade path. That is not proof that repair or modification is impossible; it means you should not assume an upgrade is supported or treat it as a documented solution to a game’s memory demand.

A microSD card expands storage, not RAM. The Steam Deck specifications list microSD support separately from onboard memory. More storage can give you space for game files, but it does not add to the 16 GB unified-memory configuration or change how much memory the GPU can access. The same distinction applies to a dock or external display: neither should be treated as a way to increase the Deck’s onboard memory.

How to make a sensible decision for a demanding game

  • Start with the exact Deck model. The 16 GB LPDDR5, 6400 MT/s figure cited here is for the Steam Deck OLED product specifications; do not silently generalize that particular specification to every handheld PC.
  • Separate the platform requirements. Note whether the listed memory requirement is for Windows or SteamOS/Linux, and whether it is minimum or recommended.
  • Use the compatibility rating for the whole experience. Read any details about controls, text, launchers, and performance rather than treating “Verified” as a memory certification.
  • Look for title-specific evidence. Developer notes or requirements for the relevant platform can add context. Keep those claims separate from Valve’s general device specifications.
  • Avoid inferring a result from one number. A 16 GB Windows recommendation is not, by itself, proof that a game cannot run on Deck; a smaller minimum is not proof that it will run well.

Valve’s device specifications and compatibility review answer different questions. The specification establishes the OLED’s memory configuration; the compatibility rating addresses broader usability and operation. Neither, by itself, supplies a universal rule for predicting a game’s Deck memory use.

Can the Steam Deck run a game that lists 16 GB RAM as a requirement?

That requirement alone cannot answer the question. Check whether it is a Windows minimum or recommendation, then consult the game’s Steam Deck compatibility rating and developer notes. Valve does not publish a universal RAM cutoff that predicts every title’s Deck performance.

Does a Verified rating mean a game uses little RAM?

No. Verified means the game passes Valve’s compatibility checks without configuration work. Those checks address the broader experience, including controls, text, launchers, and performance; the badge is not a RAM-use measurement.

Can I add RAM to the Steam Deck with a microSD card or dock?

No. A microSD card adds storage for files, not memory. Valve lists onboard memory separately from microSD support, and the product information does not document an owner-accessible RAM upgrade path.

What does an Unknown compatibility rating mean?

It means the game has not completed Valve’s compatibility review. It is not a finding that the game is either compatible or incompatible, so look for other title-specific information.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Steam Deck OLED has 16 GB of unified onboard memory; the GPU’s access to up to 8 GB is part of that total, not extra VRAM. A game’s Windows RAM requirement is useful context, not a Deck verdict. Check the title’s platform-specific listing, Valve compatibility rating, and developer notes—and don’t mistake storage expansion or a compatibility badge for a RAM measurement.
