If your Steam Deck is docked but the TV shows nothing, disconnect the Deck, turn on External display safe mode under Steam > Display, then reconnect it. The setting selects a lower resolution and refresh rate to help establish a picture. It is a useful first fix, not a guarantee: the TV input, cable, dock, or supported display mode can also be responsible.
How to fix a blank Steam Deck TV display
- Disconnect the Steam Deck from the dock or USB-C hub.
- On the Deck, open Steam > Display and set External display safe mode to On.
- Reconnect the Deck to the dock and check whether the TV displays an image.
- If the screen remains blank, confirm the TV is set to the input connected to the dock. Reseat the display cable; if possible, try another TV input, cable, or dock or hub.
Valve says safe mode picks a low resolution and refresh rate for the external display to improve the chances of “successfully lighting up the display.” It may help when the connection cannot sustain full transmission speeds—for example, because a cable is very long or damaged, or because of signal interference. Valve’s Steam Deck docking guide describes the procedure for both LCD and OLED models.

If the TV works only at a lower resolution or refresh rate
Open Steam > Display and adjust the external resolution or refresh rate. If a lower setting works but a higher one does not, the dock, cable, or TV input may not support the higher mode.

TV inputs can have different capabilities. Valve gives the example of some televisions supporting 4K/2K at 60 Hz on certain inputs but only 30 Hz on others; those figures are an example, not a universal TV specification. Check the manual for the specific input you are using. For highest compatibility, Valve recommends DP 1.4 or HDMI 2.0-or-newer compliant cables, particularly for high-resolution or high-refresh-rate modes. Passive DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapters are not supported and may cause issues; use an active cable or adapter instead. Valve’s docking guidance covers these connection limits.

If the Steam Deck screen turns black when connected
This is expected in Gaming Mode when an external display is connected. To use both the Deck screen and the TV at the same time, reboot into Desktop Mode. Valve’s guidance does not describe simultaneous display use as an available Gaming Mode option.
If the picture does not fit the TV
In Steam > Display, turn off Automatically Scale User Interface, then adjust the slider to fit the screen. If the edges are still cut off, check the television’s overscan setting.

What to check in a dock or hub
Valve says most USB-C-compliant docks and hubs work with the Steam Deck. To power the Deck through the dock, the dock or hub needs USB-C Power Delivery passthrough. Some models reserve part of the available power for connected peripherals, which can trigger a “slow charge” warning. Thunderbolt and DisplayLink docks may work, but Valve does not officially support them. See Valve’s dock compatibility notes.

If you are choosing hardware, check for USB-C Power Delivery passthrough, HDMI output for a TV, and support for the resolution and refresh rate you want. Match those capabilities to the exact TV input in use. A compatible cable or dock is not automatically necessary if your existing setup supports the desired mode.

External display limits are not the built-in screen limits
Valve lists the built-in LCD Steam Deck display as supporting up to 60 Hz and the OLED model’s built-in display as supporting up to 90 Hz. Those are panel limits, not stated limits for an external TV. For external output, check the supported modes of the TV input, dock, and cable. Valve’s basic-use guide lists the built-in display specifications.
