Short answer: a Steam Deck “DLSS mod” does not run NVIDIA’s native DLSS runtime. Community projects such as Decky Framegen and DLSS-to-FSR components intercept a game’s DLSS calls and route them through FSR-based upscaling or frame-generation paths. The in-game DLSS switch can therefore be the entry point for a replacement implementation, not proof that NVIDIA DLSS is active.
Compatibility is per game and per configuration. There is no official universal supported-games list, no reliable Steam Deck-wide FPS multiplier, and no guarantee that a patch will work after a game, graphics API, plugin or runtime update.

What the Steam Deck “DLSS mod” actually changes
DLSS is NVIDIA’s proprietary rendering technology and normally depends on NVIDIA’s runtime stack. The Steam Deck community tools discussed here take a different route: they translate or replace the game’s expected DLSS interface with an FSR-family implementation that the Deck can use.

Decky Framegen describes itself as a Decky Loader plugin for applying OptiScaler upscaling and frame-generation modifications. Its documented workflow can replace DLSS calls with FSR 3 or FSR 3.1 paths, install or remove the files for individual games, and expose OptiScaler settings. The project also documents experimental OptiFG support for adding frame generation to games that do not already expose a frame-generation path. “Experimental” matters here: OptiFG is not a routine, guaranteed feature.

A separate Linux and Steam Deck project describes its method as an FSR 3.1 workaround and uses manual file placement and launch options. These are related approaches, not one standardized mod. Their files, runtime choices and instructions can differ between releases.
Why an in-game DLSS option can still appear
Many games only expose their upscaler through a DLSS setting. A compatibility layer can make that setting call an FSR replacement instead. Seeing “DLSS” in the game menu therefore tells you what the game was designed to request, not which implementation is rendering the image on your Deck.
Upscaling and frame generation are separate paths
Upscaling renders the game internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs an output image. Frame generation inserts interpolated frames between rendered frames. Generated frames do not advance the game simulation or create an equivalent increase in input sampling. A higher displayed-frame counter can therefore coexist with the same underlying simulation rate and similar input latency.

Documented setup examples
| Game or situation | What is documented | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Hogwarts Legacy | Used as a setup example by the Linux/Steam Deck FSR 3.1 project. | An example configuration, not a guarantee for your current build or launch options. |
| Star Wars Jedi: Survivor | Also used as a setup example by that project. | Confirm the project’s current instructions and recent user reports before patching. |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | The project documents a Vulkan-related limitation for frame generation and separately describes a DLSS-only workaround. | Graphics API selection can determine whether a feature works. Do not assume the same result under Vulkan and another API. |
The DLSS-to-FSR3 compatibility wiki labels entries as working, unreported or uncheckable, and not working. Those labels are user reports rather than certification. The indexed copy shows a last-modified date of February 8, 2025, so it can be stale after a game or mod update.
Variables that change compatibility
- The exact game build, including changes delivered by a recent patch.
- Whether the game uses DirectX or Vulkan and which API you selected at launch.
- Your Decky Framegen, OptiScaler, FSR runtime and plugin versions.
- Whether the game already has a frame-generation implementation.
- Launch options, environment variables, overlays and other injected DLLs.
Check the current documentation for the specific project and look for reports made against your game version. A report that worked months ago is not evidence that the same files remain compatible today.
Choosing an approach
| Choice | What changes | What you should measure |
|---|---|---|
| Native game FSR | Uses the implementation shipped by the game. | Base rendered frame rate, image stability and artifacts with no injected files. |
| DLSS-to-FSR replacement | Routes a game’s DLSS request through an FSR-compatible layer. | Whether the game launches, the base frame rate, visual artifacts and stability. |
| Upscaling only | Changes internal resolution and reconstruction but does not insert frames. | Base frame rate, responsiveness and ghosting. |
| Frame-generation path | Adds or enables interpolated frames when the selected runtime supports it. | Base versus displayed frame rate, latency, interpolation artifacts and crashes. |
The available sources do not provide controlled, Steam Deck-specific comparisons that rank these choices. Use the table as a test plan, not as a promise that one mode is faster or cleaner.
Prepare before installing
- Use a current SteamOS installation and a legitimately installed copy of the target game.
- Install Decky Loader only if you intend to use the Decky Framegen route.
- Record the game’s current graphics API and launch options.
- Close or disable overlays while diagnosing a failure; the compatibility wiki specifically recommends testing with overlays disabled.
- Remove or unpatch an existing injector before trying a different DLL or runtime arrangement.
- Keep a way to restore the original game files, because manual and plugin-based methods place files in different locations.
Do not mix instructions from the two projects. Their package layouts, environment variables and removal procedures are not interchangeable.

Install with Decky Framegen
The plugin’s README is the authority for the exact release you install. Configuration labels and runtime options are version-sensitive, so use this sequence as a safe map rather than copying commands from an older guide.
- Open Decky Loader. In its plugin store, locate Decky Framegen and install the current release.
- Set up OptiScaler. Use the plugin’s setup control and select the runtime path offered for your game. The project documents more than one compatibility option; the appropriate choice depends on the title and API.
- Select the game. Use Decky Framegen’s per-game management screen to patch that title. Do not patch an entire library indiscriminately.
- Apply the documented launch configuration. Add the launch options or environment variables shown for your selected plugin and runtime version. Avoid command lines copied from a different release.
- Enable the game-side entry point. If the project instructs you to select DLSS, FSR or a frame-generation setting in the game, use the setting specified for that runtime. The label alone does not identify the underlying implementation.
- Test without overlays first. Launch the game, confirm that it reaches gameplay, and compare base and displayed frame rates separately. Record crashes or visual defects before adding other overlays.
- Unpatch before changing methods. Use the plugin’s unpatch or removal flow, then follow the project’s instructions for trying another runtime or injector.
Manual Linux and Steam Deck method
The separate Linux/Deck project uses a different workflow. Its README supplies package contents, the game-directory location for those files and the launch options for each supported example. Because those paths change with the package and game, use the README’s exact folder rather than placing DLLs in a guessed directory.
- Download the package release specified by that project.
- Read the title-specific instructions before copying anything; Hogwarts Legacy and Jedi: Survivor are documented examples, while Red Dead Redemption 2 has a Vulkan frame-generation caveat.
- Place only the files listed for your game in the stated directory.
- Add the project’s launch options exactly as written for your selected API and runtime.
- Start the game with overlays disabled and test the requested in-game setting.
- If it fails, follow that project’s troubleshooting steps, which include removing a conflicting DLL or adjusting launch options.
These manual steps should not be applied to Decky Framegen installations. Use the project’s own unpatch or removal procedure before switching approaches.

No reliable Steam Deck-specific benchmark in the available documentation establishes a universal FPS uplift or a fixed performance cost. The compatibility wiki refers to a measurement from one system and warns that it is only a single measurement; it cannot support a general multiplier for every Deck.

Read the counters correctly
- Base or rendered FPS: frames produced by the game simulation and renderer.
- Displayed FPS: the output after any generated frames are inserted.
- Latency: how quickly input affects a rendered frame; generated frames do not automatically improve this.
- Image quality: ghosting, disocclusion errors, shimmer and other interpolation or reconstruction artifacts.
Frame generation can make motion look smoother while leaving the underlying rendered rate unchanged. It can also add artifacts or latency. Without controlled tests on your Deck, do not promise “double FPS,” a specific millisecond cost or a guaranteed improvement.
Artifacts and the DLAA suggestion
The compatibility wiki says that selecting DLAA instead of DLSS can minimize, but not eliminate, artifacts or ghosting in many cases. That is project guidance, not a guarantee. Game engine motion vectors, the chosen runtime and the scene itself determine whether the result is acceptable.

The game will not start
- Confirm that the game and mod are on current versions and that you used the correct project’s instructions.
- Disable overlays and retry.
- Check the selected graphics API and runtime; a Vulkan path can behave differently from another API.
- Unpatch the game, remove conflicting injected files as directed by the project, and test the unmodified game before reinstalling.
The option appears but nothing changes
- Verify that the launch options or environment variables match the installed runtime version.
- Confirm that the files are in the title-specific location documented by the project.
- Check whether the selected mode is upscaling only or includes frame generation.
The image has ghosting or visual glitches
- Compare native game FSR, the replacement path and (where offered) DLAA one at a time.
- Disable overlays and other injectors so you can isolate the compatibility layer.
- Record the game build, API, runtime and setting when consulting community reports; those details often explain why two users see different results.
Frame generation works in one API but not another
Treat that as a compatibility limitation, not immediate proof that the Deck is defective. The documented RDR2 Vulkan issue demonstrates why API-specific reports matter.

- For Decky Framegen, open the game’s entry in the plugin and use its unpatch or removal control.
- For the manual project, follow its removal instructions and delete or restore only the files it identifies.
- Restart the game after removal and confirm that it launches without the compatibility layer.

Is a Steam Deck DLSS mod worth trying?
It can be useful when a particular game’s native options are inadequate and recent reports show that the chosen replacement works on your build. It is a poor fit if you need guaranteed support, official updates or predictable latency. The practical decision is title-by-title: check current reports, test with overlays disabled, measure base and displayed frame rates separately, inspect image quality, and keep an easy rollback path.
FAQ
Does DLSS really run on Steam Deck?
Not in the native NVIDIA-runtime sense described by DLSS documentation. These community tools substitute an FSR-family path for the game’s DLSS call. The menu may still say DLSS because that is the game’s original entry point.
Is there an official list of supported games?
No. Community lists are user-reported and can become stale. Hogwarts Legacy and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor are documented setup examples, while Red Dead Redemption 2 has a documented Vulkan frame-generation limitation; verify current reports for your exact build.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWill the mod increase FPS?
There is no universal, Steam Deck-specific uplift established here. Measure rendered FPS, displayed FPS, latency and artifacts on your own configuration rather than relying on a multiplier.
How do I remove the patch?
Use Decky Framegen’s per-game unpatch or removal flow, or follow the manual project’s own file-removal instructions. Unpatch before trying another injector or DLL arrangement.
