Choose a static QR code when its information will stay fixed and you do not need scan analytics. Choose a dynamic QR code when you may need to change the destination after printing or want to measure scans. The key difference is where the destination is managed: inside the code itself, or through a service that redirects scans.
What makes a QR code static or dynamic?
A static code stores its payload—such as a web address, Wi-Fi details, contact card, or plain text—in the QR pattern. A dynamic code instead points to a managed redirect. That service sends a scan to the destination currently configured for the code and may record scan information.
“Dynamic” does not mean the printed pattern changes. It means the destination can be changed in the service without replacing the artwork, provided the service and account remain available.
Static vs. dynamic QR codes at a glance
| Decision | Static | Dynamic |
|---|---|---|
| Where the destination lives | Encoded directly in the QR symbol | A managed redirect points to the current destination |
| Change destination after printing | Not possible; create a replacement code and reprint it | Possible while the redirect service and account remain available |
| Scan measurement | No redirect-based scan measurement | Available when the provider offers analytics |
| Service dependency | No QR redirect provider is needed to decode the payload | The redirect provider must resolve the code |
| Privacy | No third-party redirect analytics are inherent to the code | Depends on what the provider collects, aggregates, and retains |
| Good fit | Stable URL, Wi-Fi details, contact card, or fixed text | Printed materials whose destination may change or whose scans need measuring |
| Cost | A static generator may be free | Provider- and plan-specific; may involve recurring fees |
These are typical capabilities of the two approaches, not guarantees about every QR-code service. For dynamic codes, check the specific provider’s terms.

Can you edit a static QR code after printing?
No. The destination or other information is encoded in the symbol, so changing it requires generating a new code. If the original has already been printed, you must replace the print or place a new code over it. A static code cannot be converted into a dynamic one in place.
A static code can still point to a web page that you control, and you may be able to change that page’s contents. But the code itself cannot redirect to a different address unless the address encoded in it already leads to a redirect you manage.

When should you use a static code?
Use a static code when the information is expected to remain stable and scan measurement is not useful. Typical examples include:
- A Wi-Fi QR code for network details that are unlikely to change.
- A vCard or contact card containing information you expect to keep current.
- Plain text or a stable web address on a permanent sign or document.
With no QR redirect provider in the path, the code does not depend on that provider to resolve its payload. A URL encoded in the code still depends on the destination website remaining available.

When should you use a dynamic code?
Choose a dynamic code if the destination may need to change after the code is printed, or if scan analytics would help you make a decision. That can suit menus, packaging, labels, posters, property signs, event materials, and campaigns.
Because scans go through a managed redirect, you can update the destination without replacing the printed code, as long as the provider continues resolving it and your account remains active. Providers that offer analytics may also report scan details, but the fields and handling practices differ.

Do dynamic QR codes expire?
There is no single expiration rule for all dynamic QR codes. The code’s continued usefulness depends on the service resolving its redirect; account, subscription, and expiry terms vary by provider. Before printing, check what happens if a plan ends or an account is closed.
For example, QRCode.io says its dynamic redirect depends on the plan remaining current. That is a claim about that provider’s product, not a rule for every service. Its page lists a starting price of $3.99 per month and was last updated in October 2026. Dynamic QR Pro displays €9 per month plus VAT on its guide page; the page does not state a publication date. These are provider-specific prices, not category-wide rates. See QRCode.io’s comparison and Dynamic QR Pro’s guide for their terms and details.

What do dynamic QR analytics reveal?
Analytics work because the scan passes through the provider’s redirect. Depending on the service, reports may include scan time, approximate location, device type, browser, or referrer. Do not assume every provider records the same fields—or handles them the same way. Review the provider’s privacy policy and data-retention terms before using a dynamic code in a public-facing campaign.
Provider disclosures illustrate why that check matters. OpenQR says its static codes are generated in-browser and do not pass through its servers. For its dynamic codes, it says scans are redirected and counted, with counters grouped by approximate location, coarse device type, referrer, and hour; it says it does not store IP addresses or individual scan identifiers and deletes raw troubleshooting records after seven days. Those are OpenQR’s own stated practices, not an industry-wide guarantee. Its privacy disclosure is dated 27 June 2026: OpenQR privacy.
Get Dynamic QR says its system records timestamps, device type, browser, and approximate location, and that it does not store personally identifying information. That is also a provider-specific statement, not a general assurance about dynamic QR analytics: Get Dynamic QR’s product page.
What to check before printing
- Destination change: Could the link or content need to change while the printed item is still in use?
- Analytics: Will scan counts or other reported details affect a decision, or would they merely be interesting?
- Privacy: What information does the provider collect, aggregate, and retain?
- Continuity: What happens to the redirect if your account or plan ends?
- Cost over time: Compare the service cost over the expected life of the printed item, not just the initial price.
- Testing: Scan the printed artwork and confirm the destination works before ordering a large run. A dynamic redirect adds a service dependency and does not ensure the final destination stays online.
Can you use both types?
Yes. Use static codes for permanent information that needs no scan measurement, and dynamic codes for printed assets that need destination management or analytics. That avoids adding a redirect service to every code while keeping flexibility where it matters.
Quick Recap
How to choose
- Ask whether the destination might change after printing. If no, move to the next question; if yes, a dynamic code is the practical choice.
- Ask whether measuring scans would change what you do. If no, a static code is usually enough; if yes, choose a dynamic service that offers relevant analytics.
- For a dynamic code, compare the provider’s continuity, privacy, and full cost terms. Confirm how redirects are handled if the account or plan ends.
- Test before committing to a large print run. Scan the code as it will appear in the final material and verify the destination.
