Without those personal details, the useful answer is a practical guide to what aspiring cloud engineers can learn before their first role: build hands-on skills around a target job, practice the work rather than collecting credentials, and treat provider guidance as a starting point—not a promise of employment.
What cloud engineering work can involve
“Cloud engineer” covers work that varies by employer and platform. One concrete view comes from Google Cloud’s Associate Cloud Engineer exam guide: its assessed areas include planning and implementing solutions, infrastructure as code, operating solutions, and configuring access and security. That is an exam scope, not a complete definition of every cloud engineering job, but it shows why the work extends beyond clicking through a console.

Microsoft’s Cloud Adoption Framework also identifies platform engineering, containerization, microservices, and AI development among skills organizations may need as they adopt cloud technologies. These are examples of organizational needs, not a checklist every entry-level applicant must already master.
Which skills are worth building first?
Learn the foundations through practice
Choose a target role and platform, then connect each learning activity to work that role may involve: planning a solution, deploying it, describing its infrastructure, operating it, and controlling access. Google Cloud’s career guidance recommends role-oriented learning and mentions Python as part of a cloud career toolkit. A programming language is useful in context; it is not a substitute for understanding the systems you are automating.

Develop operational and security habits
Practice explaining how a system is configured, how changes are made, and who can access its resources. The Associate Cloud Engineer guide is one concrete source for these themes, while Microsoft’s guidance highlights areas such as platform engineering and containerization. The best next topic depends on the roles and organizations you are targeting.
Make your learning visible
Hands-on exercises can help you turn concepts into demonstrable work. AWS Training and Certification’s first-job guidance discusses preparation and practical learning, drawing on learner accounts; it is useful provider-published advice, not independent evidence that a particular route secures a job. Keep a record of what you built, what you changed, and what you learned to troubleshoot.

How to choose a course, certificate, or lab
No single provider or credential is established as universally best. Compare learning options against the work you want to do:
Recommended Free Tools
- Role relevance: Does the material map to a job you would apply for?
- Practice: Does it include labs or projects, rather than only lessons about concepts?
- Platform fit: Does it match the cloud platform used by your target employers, or teach transferable fundamentals?
- Time and cost: Can you sustain the study schedule and any recurring fees? Check the provider’s current terms before enrolling.
Google Cloud describes its Cloud Computing Foundations Certificate as four courses with hands-on labs, and describes a separate Google Cloud Engineering Certificate as preparation for an entry-level Cloud Engineer role. These descriptions explain what the programs offer; they do not guarantee a job. AWS offers its own first-job preparation advice, while Microsoft points readers to role-aligned training and credentials. Compare the actual curriculum and practice, not the logo.

A practical way to start
- Pick a target role. Read several relevant job descriptions and note recurring responsibilities and platform requirements. Treat them as signals about your target, not a universal definition of cloud engineering.
- Choose one platform to begin. Use its learning resources to cover the basics, while keeping an eye on skills that transfer across environments.
- Pair each topic with an exercise. For example, after learning about infrastructure as code, practice describing and changing a small environment; after studying access controls, practice reasoning about who should have access.
- Document decisions and results. Explain the purpose of your project, how it is configured, and what you would improve. This gives you concrete material to discuss when applying or interviewing.
- Reassess against roles. Compare your next learning step with the gaps you see in job descriptions, rather than adding courses or credentials without a clear reason.
Google Cloud’s career guide points to Google Cloud Skills Boost activities and names Visualizing Google Cloud: 101 Illustrated References for Cloud Engineers and Architects as a reference. These are options to investigate if they fit your learning style and target platform, not prerequisites.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What two years can—and cannot—tell a beginner
Two years of experience may provide useful lessons, but the title alone cannot tell readers what those lessons were. Without the writer’s real projects, incidents, decisions, and changes in judgment, it would be misleading to claim a particular outage, cost surprise, security mistake, certification journey, or career outcome. The general guidance is clearer: build skills around a role, practice applying them, and use provider material as one input rather than treating a certificate or a single platform as a guarantee.
