Starship vs. Falcon 9: How SpaceX’s Rockets Compare

Falcon 9 is SpaceX’s established partially reusable launcher; Starship is larger and designed for far greater capacity and full reuse, but remains in development.

Falcon 9 is SpaceX’s smaller, operationally established rocket, with a reusable first-stage booster and fairing halves. Starship is a much larger spacecraft-and-booster system designed for full reuse and substantially greater payload capacity—but it is still in development, not a routine, fully reusable launch service. Flight 14 reached orbit on September 28, 2026, and delivered Starlink satellites, but the mission was cut short and the spacecraft splashed down.

What counts as “Starship” in this comparison?

Falcon 9 is a two-stage rocket: its first stage has nine Merlin 1D engines, and its second stage has one vacuum-optimized Merlin engine. “Starship” can mean the spacecraft alone, but SpaceX and NASA also use the name for the integrated system: the Starship spacecraft atop its Super Heavy booster. The size and capacity comparison below is between Falcon 9 and that complete Starship launch system, not just the Starship vehicle.

NASA describes the combined system as designed to carry crew and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars, and beyond. That describes its intended role, rather than confirming that all those missions are operational today. NASA’s Launch Services Program Rockets page also lists Starship under SpaceX’s launch offering.

How much bigger is Starship than Falcon 9?

SpaceX’s June 5, 2026 prospectus lists Falcon 9 at 70 meters tall and 3.7 meters in diameter. It lists the Starship system at 124.4 meters tall and 9 meters in diameter. On those published dimensions, Starship is 54.4 meters taller and more than twice as wide. These are company-published specifications, and vehicle versions can change.

Which rocket carries more to orbit?

SpaceX publishes approximate low Earth orbit (LEO) payload capacities of 22.8 metric tonnes for Falcon 9 and 100-plus metric tonnes for Starship. These are stated capacities, not guaranteed payloads for every mission. The actual payload depends on the destination orbit and vehicle configuration; consult SpaceX’s capacity definition before treating the figures as a direct promise for a particular launch.

How does reusability differ?

Falcon 9 reuses its booster and fairings

Falcon 9’s first-stage booster and the two halves of its payload fairing are recovered and reused. Its second stage is not designed for recovery or reuse, so Falcon 9 is partially—not fully—reusable.

In its Falcon Payload User’s Guide dated May 9, 2025, SpaceX reported that, by February 2025, Falcon first stages had flown again more than 384 times, with those re-flights reported at 100% success. SpaceX also reported fairing halves re-flown on 307 missions by that date, likewise at 100% success. These are company-reported historical reuse figures, not a guarantee about any individual component or future flight.

Starship is designed for full reuse, but routine reuse is not established

Starship and Super Heavy are designed to be fully and rapidly reusable. That is an architectural goal, not yet the same as an operational record of routinely recovering, refurbishing, and flying both stages again. The distinction matters: a vehicle may be designed for reuse before it has demonstrated a repeatable return-to-flight process.

On September 28, 2026, Starship Flight 14 reached orbit and delivered 26 Starlink satellites, but the mission ended early and the spacecraft splashed down and tipped over, according to the Associated Press. It was an important development milestone, not evidence that the ship had returned for routine reuse.

Which has the longer flight record?

Falcon 9 has a far longer operating history. SpaceX’s June 5, 2026 prospectus reported about 620 orbital launches and a mission success rate above 99% as of March 31, 2026. The company also reported 165 Falcon 9 launches during calendar year 2025. Keep the dates attached to these figures: they describe the record as reported at those points, not a live count.

By contrast, the Associated Press reported that Flight 14 was Starship’s first flight to reach orbit. Its orbital achievement and satellite delivery do not make its test history comparable to Falcon 9’s established launch record.

What missions are the rockets intended to serve?

  • Falcon 9: launches satellites and scientific payloads; the Falcon/Dragon program also supports cargo and crew transportation missions.
  • Starship: is designed to carry crew and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars, and beyond. Those are intended capabilities, not proof that every mission type is currently available as a routine service.

NASA added Starship to SpaceX’s National Security Space Launch (NLS) II offering in March 2025. The contract listing establishes that it is included in the offering; it does not establish flight readiness or a completed NASA mission. See NASA’s March 28, 2025 contract announcement.

Is Starship cheaper than Falcon 9?

There is no supported present-day cost winner from the available comparable figures. Full reuse is intended to lower Starship’s marginal launch cost, while Falcon 9 already operates with a reusable booster and fairings. But without a comparable current price per launch or per kilogram—matched for mission, orbit, and configuration—it would be misleading to say Starship is already cheaper.

Which one is “better”?

The answer depends on what matters for the mission. Falcon 9 is the established choice when the relevant comparison is a long operational record and demonstrated booster-and-fairing reuse. Starship is the more ambitious system in size and stated payload capacity, built around full reuse and broader future mission goals. Those advantages are not interchangeable: its published capacity and design intent do not erase the difference in demonstrated operational maturity.
